In junior high/high school, I had a huge crush on this guy. He introduced me to The Civil Wars. I still think of him often, especially when I hear this song.
Again here in 2019...There is so much intensity in their chemistry.... Like the way she looks at him show the full level of love she is so intense... And the way he looks back that's so adorable ... They look great together... Wish they were still together... miss their music 😢
I want them back... watching this video makes me feel like crying because I remember going to see them and all the giddy-ness and just standing in awe at them. I would give anything to feel that again...

I've heard and seen a lot of music in my life! 300s if not more of show from R&B, punk, hair bands classical and opera. I just love music. I prefer to listen to people who do their own works , which is what drew me to Joy and John . This is some of the most beautiful work ever composed! Here's food for thought for all those who purpose romantic connection. In all likely hood they in the physical world! They remained true to there respected mates Joy had a baby . john had children of his own ,But in spiritual world John and Joy's soul connected in a way so few people do and dream off. Or else this music couldn't have touch so many including their selves. and that is what's undeniable.
Regardless of any rumor of these two having an affair, a physical one, these two for sure had to have an emotional one. You can’t be this good, be connected and have your audience feel it too without without having them feel it or feel something between them. If the phrase “making love” had a picture of what making music with someone you love and admire sounds like it, it would be a picture of these two.

Listening to this song in 2020 and hoping that in twelve years, these two will fall in love again. I know they were both married to other people, but sometimes, you meet the person you're meant for when you're with someone else. Love like this is magical.
So special, that was not chemistry, it was pure God given. I respect both of them to honor their marriages. But, being selfish, I so wish they were together. Heavenly...thank you and I am so pleased they are both excelling independent of each other.
She loves him so much. It's extreamly beautiful how you can feel the love she feels for him through looking in her eyes. How she watches him. Its absolutely breath taking. I love you JOY and JOHN.
@@Highlikeheaven89 Yes it was which is why that they chose to not continue to work together. Joy divorced her husband in 2019 and she has two children. John is still happily married and has three children. BTW, Joy's husband was their manager and traveled with them most of the time.

I've come to only appreciate artists that have clever or witty or beautifully written words in their music, and often times I'm willing to negotiate a mediocre voice, melody or beat for that reason. I'm happy to say I didn't have to do any negotiating. This performance was impeccable. Everything was perfection, from their harmonies to their beautiful lyrics. And the both of them being strikingly attractive did not hurt that at all. What more could I ask for?

its 2019. i want the unfiltered truth of why this ended. i was in love with this duo when they were around (maybe as much as they were with each other?)
The problem is the majority won't believe until they are told what they want to hear. Of course, everyone is speculating that these two had an affair, at least an emotional one, but I hope you don't expect them to come forward with this sort of personal information? Especially when both parties have children with their significant others?
If Joy and John Paul weren't totally in love with each other then they're the greatest actors on earth. The way they interacted, looked at each other, sang what they sang, AND the way it ended - all pointed to two people who were in love. It was obvious though they tried to deny/deflect it. The eyes don't lie. (They're interaction reminded me a lot of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac.) And JP has toured a lot since TCW broke up so that can't be it. They were totally in love but the problem was both were already married. When circumstances prevent two people from getting together it can actually create a lot of anger and animosity making it impossible to continue working together. It's really a shame b/c those two were musical magic.
@@IvanLendl87 Well, they are performers on stage... We don't question when two people in theatre or movies believably play lovers. It's easy to feel chemistry between Joy and John because they play very emotional, heartfelt music. I don't think it would be very unbelievable to think that there was absolutely nothing going on and they really just acted on stage to make their music more impactful. They do look like a cute couple and they made fantastic music together, there's no argument here. But there is absolutely no reason to believe that the chemistry and flirty behavior continued off the stage. On the other hand, its very, very odd that after winning Grammys, the pair decided to part ways. If this was just about work, maybe they would have collaborated at least for some time more. I don't know.

So this has special meaning bc my husband and I grew up together and had a brief romantic encounter, and then 20 years later, we reunited, and the rest is history. I hope we live to have 20 more.

Nothing more descriptive of what magic the human voice can be WITHOUT anything more than their voices & a guitar...No computers, no one telling them to fix anything or change anything...the perfection is naturally aided by soul. Drift off for a moment ...THIS is exactly what I picture nightly campfires to have been years in the past. Our souls yearn for this in many different cultures. The artists may find this to be corny as well as others...But perhaps its why so many respond to this.
After John Paul's Grammy 2014 speech, I'm pretty sure they're done. So much tension and hate has been built up. This is a tragedy. This will be one of my favorite songs and one of my favourite videos of the pair.
I feel that "rift" has been badly misinterpreted; he could have made that speech with Joy by his side and we wouldn't have thought twice about it. We of course can't know from the outside, so this is just my opinion. I do hope they reconnect... in 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, whatever it takes. They are not fools. They know what they have.

Hes in love with her voice. Not her. He leans into it while she leans into him. It's evident how she feels. They're soul mates, but not the forever kind. Sometimes we make beautiful music with people but still have to let them go. We aren't meant for everyone we'll love and will love us. They're music is bittersweet because that's exactly what they are. This could be their last reunion. Or maybe another will happen in 20 years. Or perhaps another lifetime. Their music, though, will forever be an ode to an unforgettable connection.
You may be onto something. Joy was always much more sensual in their performances, and while it might have been driven by the songs rather than John, it was still interesting to witness the contrast of her emotion versus John's somewhat cold shoulder. John was very hard to read in their performances.. It was like he was restraining himself from showing Joy affection. It really added layers to their vibe on the stage. Their music was bittersweet and their live performances were the epithomy of unrequited love.
this just proves to me that you don't have to be in love with someone for them to be your soulmate. Clearly these two voices were meant for each other, these people were meant to come together, there's something about them both vocally and personally that's really compatible, even if they aren't "together."
Sometimes the reunion of magic such as this is inevitable, in spite of whatever discord exists on the personal front. I look forward to such inevitability. (:
I've never seen it before but I am glad it is back. I am sure it is Joy's side who put it up as it looks like her and her husband took control over the Civil Wars legacy but whoever did it..it's very appreciated. I just saw JP perform the other day. I so wish they were together still...never got to see them live.
I guess folks will keep on believing what they want to believe about these co-writers of such awesome and beautiful music. If it warms your little hearts to think that JPW and JW had some torrid affair, nothing is going to stop y'all. I happen to think Joy was being honest when she told an interviewer that their connection was not of a romantic nature, but it was just as deep. When two songwriters who work together so closely also perform together, they often feel a connection so strong it's a high like no other. They do have a connection to the music and each other while they're singing together, that's as intense as if they were engaged in a passionate affair and that is just as real. But, it seems, only another musician would understand that. If they had ever shared tender feelings, I don't think they would *still* have hard feelings on either side. Maybe for a while, if someone got really hurt, but not a years- long deep freeze. I believe it was irreconcilable professional differences. But if that is the case, there's always a chance that way down the road one of them will have a change of heart, say, in "another 10 or 12 years, maybe longer..."

I am an artist too and the life for artists is very difficult but even the love went away, you can continue and offer us some new minutes of happiness. The things you create together are more important than your own separate life. That why the artists suffer more than another people

I just discovered these two...absolutely beautiful voices. And they're not together anymore??? Wow...please, you two need to get back together, making incredible, beautiful sounds coming from your mouths. I just read up on their sudden professional break-up. Okay, it is apparently clear that these two became real close - deep feelings for each other. How difficult this situation must've been...She's married to their manager and she and JP are making incredible, beautiful music together. It is human nature...there are going to be serious, loving feelings involved. The fact that they don't even speak now, proves that they came to that point where their love for each other, which they probably tried to suppress, ultimately was their demise. That sucks. This happens, love fucks everything up and now these two aren't together making music together. Joy should truly search for her feelings deep down and get a divorce. This is Johnny Cash and June Carter all over again. Hope they get back together one day...they're meant to be together.
