I have a 2002 7700 4X4. Factory snow plow option on it. Former highway department truck that I bought with 32K on in 2013. I have 121K on it now and I have done a few things to it. I will say I still have factory shocks under it and they are perfect. The truck is an absolute beast. My wife told me to never sell it, she loves it, well hell, so do I. Thanks for your video. Nice to see and hear someone else appreciate these rather rare beasts.

A whole lot cheaper, and essentially does the same job with almost the same tow rating as a standard new truck (crew cab short box Ram's F150 etc.) You can do a lot with those 750$ a month payments!

Bought my 2000 xlt F150 5.4 L 7700 used with 130,000 miles last winter. Previous owner went through it replacing all brakes and lines , fuel tank, plugs & coils, muffler. A lot of rust but I got it for $2,500.00. Don't drive it a lot being retired as I have only put about 2k miles on it since purchased. Have had zero issues and I believe I got a great deal. Very satisfied 😌 Especially considering the crazy prices of used vehicles nowadays ! 🤔
@moose2934
@moose2934 5 лет назад
I paid $3,500 USD for mine. The previous owner had just replaced the transmission, but the registration was out of date. $4,500 in so far and the only issue I have now is the heat doesn't blow hot enough, so after I flush the coolant/heater core, I should have a perfectly running truck! Going to get some sexier headlights and look into a more aggressive hood and bumpers. It's already high enough off of the ground for me and came with Goodyear Wranglers with about 50%-60% life in them. It handles on the road like my ex's '02 F250 Diesel with a 4'ish inch lift. 4x4 cannot turn into parking lots easily without grinding (Insane downpour and stuck vehicles left and right at work). After 1 short but long week of daily driving and work with this truck (2,100 miles), I am loving it! No huge complaints minus the butterfly doors being stubborn sometimes, but for my first vehicle purchase, I'm loving it!

Depending on your door code, you may have a 4R100 instead of a 4R70W. You can also tell your rear end ratio and if it is limited slip or not. For anyone reading who has one or is interested in getting one.

Nice! this truck had the same rear end, I am not sure if it had LSD or not actually, I suspect it maybe did not, 3.73 though, its interesting the options, I wonder why someone would not get a limited slip? it does make less noise going around tight corners then my 02 F150 non HD with a LSD. 86k is pretty low, very nice!

Kingsoupturbo if you look on your door tag and on the axle section it has a “26” it’s open. I can’t remember the letter but if it’s a letter then a 6 (example B6,E6,L6) it’s limited slip, and if your second number isn’t a 6 it is something other than 3.73. And I don’t get it either, I hate open diffs on a pickup

I've had my 03 xlt 7700 since 2006. Been through a few transmissions and lots of front end parts. Still fairly low mileage at 170k. The key way leveling kits are hard on the front end especially the CV boots and ball joints. I've never been able to find a suspension lift for a 7700 but plenty available for a 5 lug. Great truck overall. Better brakes and steering compared to my 99 f150 5 lug.

in 2017 I bought a '03 7700 5.4 4R100 3.73 non-LS Bi-fuel WITHOUT the propane tank (B-I-G problem with smog cert), 220k miles for $2500. Drove from LA to ATL via I-40 and back, not so much as a hiccup. Does very well off road even with open dif (but those damn 7 lug wheels...). Got into some gnarly terrain and wanted more ground clearance (even with Micky Thompson ATZ 33"). Not a fan of torsion bar lift, I sold the truck and got an '00 F250 Super Duty. Killer off road, but the solid front axle and HD springs made it difficult for me on the paved and curvy mountain roads where I live. That, and the V10 sucked down way too much gas for a driver. So, I have a new appreciation for the torsion bar IFS. My driving is 80/20 and with the right tires, my recently acquired second '00 7700 hugs the curves and climbs over everything. Reg cab LB 4x4 - extremely rare. I'm shopping now for suspension parts and cant find info on the difference between regular F150 and 7700, but I see what looks like 3" lift blocks on the rear (factory). Currently riding on MT MTZp3 285/75 16 - mountain goat! It seems these were fleet vehicles mostly, especially the BiFuels. If you're OK with short beds, then the State of California auctions these beauties off really cheap at least a few times a year. Try and get a govt owned 7700 from auction. At least you'll know they were maintained properly (why my 03 was so good even with 220k). All compromises considered, the 7700 is best of both worlds. And cheap, too!

Very nice! the dream is to get those super rust free trucks from california and with the option of Bi-fuel, they are not good on gas! At least the 7 bolt rims look pretty good, the old style 5 bolt pattern doesn't have many options either. Torsion bar from an engineering perspective does free up lots of room in the front suspension and unsprung weight I believe! all the trucks up here have rot in the same failed Ford open body areas, when I was just in southern california I marveled at the rust free perfect trucks, very nice!

@Kingsoupturbo
@Kingsoupturbo 2 года назад
Hey there! Its mostly a F150 with a few key features. Bigger rear axle, the sterling 9.75 i think vs the ford 8.8 to get that higher load rating. Bigger front brakes caliper otor shared with the expedition (except its a 5 bolt and the 7700 is a 6 or 7 bolt, only a few wheel options for these). Bigger radiator too I believe. Apparently some came with the larger 4r100 Trans vs the 4r70, but that changes model to model. There were rumors of a larger frame in the rear, but I can't confirm that really. When you check like Rockauto for parts, you'll see exceptions for 7700 stuff for example. Thanks for watching!

I have a 2003, 7700 w/154K mi. It replaced my 2003 Nissan Frontier. I acquired it from the State of Colorado. I think it was a Fish & Game Dept. vehicle. To cure the 10 mpg gas mileage driving it home from CO, I gave it a thorough tune-up (plugs, coils, mass air flow sensor, air cleaner, fuel filter, injector cleaner, I scrubbed out the throttle body, and changed the oil/filter) Thankfully, it worked, it gets 18 mpg highway now. After that, I flushed out the transmission fluid, and replaced the rear axle fluid. Being a fleet vehicle, it had no amenities, (even has a cassette player instead of CD) I actually wanted the manual crank windows, but missed the rear slider glass, so I took out the fixed, rear window and put in the slider. I also thought the pop-out glass on the extra cab doors would be nice, so I got those types of doors from the self-serve auto salvage. My only complaint is that it is as anemic as can be, (tall gears I suspect) Completely empty, if I hit a grade on the highway, I really have to accelerate to not slow way down. Also, my cruise control just died, I'm pretty sure it's the on/off switch in the steering wheel.
@Kingsoupturbo
@Kingsoupturbo 5 лет назад
Nice!! lots of fixing up there! tons of them in the scrapyards if you want to fancy it up past the base model! Mine with the 3.53 rear end requires some boot in the throttle to get up grades at highway speeds so yours is probably normal! nice job!

Great video. I am pleased to find any info on the 7700. Bought my 2000 long bed a couple of years ago with 138K miles with a lot of the paint peeled off the hood and cab top. I have driven only a couple thousand miles so far. Paid ~ $3000. It was bi-fuel and started running poorly after a few months. Paid about $1100 to get the CNG deconverted and to get a tune up. Are all F150s so expensive for tune ups? Runs much better now. What was weird was it had already been given a tune up before because the pulled plugs were not OEM--cheap budget plugs. Funny because the tune up isn't required until 100k miles. Who would spend $1000 on a tune up only to put in poor quality plugs? I have so many questions on this vehicle I'd like to get answered. Even the owners manual is cryptic as half the content isn't for this model. I can't even figure out how often the transmission/transfer case fluid needs to be changed. How do I know if my rear and front diffs fluids need to be changed at 150k miles, or do I have the kind that never need to be changed? I think this truck might have done some serious towing in the past. How did you know your transmission was bad? Did you know yours had a rod knock before you bought it? When I start up the engine, I am almost think that I hear some clanging, or maybe I am just paranoid about the valves. Does the 5.4 Triton sound a bit clangy on startup normally? Another weird thing: the owners manual specifies 10W-30W oil but the oil cap states 5W-20W so that is the only type the oil change shops will put in. Does your oil cap say 5W-20W? Sorry for all the questions. I'm just so glad somebody seems to care about this model.
@Kingsoupturbo
@Kingsoupturbo 5 лет назад
Hello there! sounds like you got the towmaster supreme, ! Tune ups, well it depends on what was included in that, the coil packs do fail on these trucks, so maybe those were replaced along with the plugs, or it had a spark plug eject problem and needed repair? Without service history, you're really just guessing. I knew the truck had Rod knock when I bought it, the valves are a bit noisy on my other 2002 F150 when it starts up, rod knock has a pretty specific noise and its pretty loud, not just ticking, sometimes hard to diagnose, there are some guides on the internet on how to figure it out. The front and rear diffs, I'd follow the factory service intervals, the rear diff on mine, the input shaft failed so I drained and replaced it then. The system is sealed like the transfer case, so technically it doesn't need changing that often. Now transmissions need attention, this 7700 had NEVER had a fluid change! it had the stopper in the trans oil pan that is left when it leaves the factory, I did a lot of reading on auto trans, and most failures (BMW\Audi\Ford\Chev) are from failure to change fluid at intervals. Towing increases the interval required,(often like every 40,000miles but light duty double or triple that) there are guides online on how to check the fluid color of your dipstick to figure out if you need a change, I highly recommend staying on top of this, having learned now what I know. I have the same fluid in my other truck for 40,000km now, the color is appropriate but if I towed more I"d do a full flush (they sell trans oil pans online that have a drain plug, I've had enough ATF in my hair now to last 10 lifetimes) I use 5w20 in this truck per factory manual (I've learned through 40 cars to follow the manual) the bearing clearances and engine tolerances are built to run on specific oil viscosity (who knew!) I had a misfire in this truck, hard to diagnose, the plugs looked perfect but were bad, and the coil pack misfired only when very hot, it was very hard to get it right, maybe the dealer who did the tuneup had the same issue hence big money! Hope this helps!

I owned an 01 7700 4WD and it was a money pit. I don't know what the previous owner put it through but it was pretty bad from the get go. Never did find out why the check engine was on from the time I bought it to the time I sold it, I through so many parts at that thing and it never fixed it. The Heavy Half tons are an interesting concept but they don't hold a matchstick to a true heavy 3/4 ton. I went from my 7700 to an 01 Gas F350 4WD and there is no comparison to how it handles with a loaded trailer. The biggest downside to the heavy half trucks is they only have a small T-Case and a small semi floating rear axle in comparison to the Sterling 10.5 that the F250 & F350 SRW trucks get. Full floating is much preferred for real heavy duty work like towing and hauling. The 1500hd Chevy's were the same way, the 1500hd & 2500 non hd only came with a semi float while the 2500hd & 3500 SRW came with the full floating axle. All in all, I am WAY happier with my F350 SRW than I ever was with the F150 7700. To each their own though, they are decent trucks but just not my cup of tea.
@Kingsoupturbo
@Kingsoupturbo 6 лет назад
For sure a real 3/4 ton + has much higher towing, its sort of an in-between step with these trucks, good mpg, small size for maneuver but with quite a bit higher payload and improved towing without going up to a huge truck. I've found out that trucks can be neglected for many many years before someone will sell them, the million little things will nickle and dime you to death. Its why people just buy new trucks and discard barley maintained older ones for nothing.

The F150 trucks with the 5.4 v8 Triton came with the heavy duty 4r100 transmission and the bigger 9.75(dana 60 equivalent) rear differential except the 97-98 has the 4Eod transmission the 4.6v8 Triton and 4.2 v6 Essen engine came with the 4r70 transmission and the 8.8 (Dana 44 Equivalent) rear differential some early 2000's 5.4 had the bigger 10.25 rear differential (dana 80 equivalent) the 7700 has the 5.4 Triton with the 4r100 transmission and the 9.75 rear differential .. not the 4r70 that's for the 4.6 v8 and 4.2 v6 ONLY.

Its confusing what came in what, I thought it would have the 4r100 as well but it had a 4r70w, (possibly replaced at some point but the research I did indicated 4r70 was a common fitment on the 7700 package) apparently many of them did. Depends. The old 2v 5.4s are excellent engines, as are the 2v 4.6s. The 3v 5.4s are flawed from the factory that causes engine failure. The 3v engines CAN be reliable but it takes work and money to get them there. If you can get a 3v F150 for a cheap price and spend the money necessary to fix it right, then you'll have a good looking and reliable truck. @UnderSprayedWhiteSkies
@UnderSprayedWhiteSkies Год назад
I own a 2003, 7700 w/4R100 trans, 3.73 rear end, 4WD w/extra cab. My owner's manual states my max towing is 8,200 lbs. If you are referring to how much you can tow, you don't add the weight of the truck. If you are going to (wisely) stick w/Ford's (towing) specs, don't tow more than what your owner manual states for your specific truck (not all 7700s are the same). For instance, Ford's maximum towing rating for a 2003, 7700, 2WD, standard cab, long bed, 4R100, w/3.73 rear end will be a little bit more than my truck. You might be confusing adding the weight of a trailer, to weight of the truck when calculating how much you plan to tow. For instance, I occasionally transport my Jeep CJ5 on a tandem axle trailer. My trailer has two, 3,700lb axles (totaling 7,400lb capacity) However, the trailer weighs about 1,750lbs. Hence, since the two 3,700lb axles are supporting the weight of the trailer, as well as whatever I were to put in the trailer, I have to subtract the 1,750lbs from the 7,400lb capacity of my trailer to get my max load for the trailer. (7400 - 1750 = 5,650lbs) My Jeep only weighs about 2,700lbs so it's a comfortable load for both my truck, and trailer 2700lbs + 1750lbs + 100lbs chains/binders = 4,550lbs. As I said above, the way my truck is equipped, my max towing weight is 8,200lbs, but when I transport my Jeep, I'm towing 4,550lbs, well below my 8,200lb limit.
