Second of the Australian midnight celebrations for the Australian Central Daylight Time Zone (ACDT, UTC + 10:30) by ABC Australia as part of the international broadcast of '2000 Today' which involved segments from over 60 countries worldwide. The ABC was the Australian broadcaster, which provided several segments for the international broadcast. The program was an international consortium led by the BBC in the United Kingdom and WGBH in the United States.
This section crosses to the main midnight celebration in Adelaide which was the highlight of the South Australian 'Click! the Millennium Festival' -- a series of 16 locations around regional SA with their own festivities linked by internet video to Adelaide. New Years Eve festivities in Adelaide are traditionally held in the suburb Glenelg, but this was held in Victoria Square in the heart of the Adelaide CBD. It is worth noting that Queensland despite being further east does not observe daylight saving and remains on Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) and its midnight was half an hour behind Adelaide. Following the Adelaide midnight was a commentary piece from singer, writer and stage director Robyn Archer, then director of the Adelaide Festival, one of the many 'Speaking Personally' segments throughout the broadcast.
Afterwards there is a cross to Emergency Management Authority in Canberra with Senator Ian Campbell discussing the impacts -- or lack thereof -- of the Y2K Millennium Bug. Finally a replay of conclusion of the Sydney Midnight fireworks from around 20 minutes before. The word 'Eternity' on the Harbour Bridge was a tribute to Arthur Stace (1884 -- 1967) a reformed alcoholic and Christian convert who wrote the word in chalk around Sydney for many years.
This segment crosses to the Adelaide midnight celebration which was part of the international broadcast. Host for this part was then-ABC journalist Maxine McKew. McKew would later contest the 2007 Federal Election for the ALP in the Division of Bennelong in Sydney for the ALP against long-incumbent Liberal Prime Minister John Howard. Labor won the seat and the election making John Howard the second Prime Minister in Australia's history to lose his seat at an election. McKew's time in office as the Member for Bennelong would be short lived as it was regained by the Liberal Party at the 2010 Election by candidate and former tennis player John Alexander.
