It is the greatest movie of all time! So many levels to understand. I’d love to watch it on acid, but acid is illegal so I’d never do that. I also love that you know that the book and movie were made at the same time. It always annoys me when people say it’s a movie based on a book. Kubrick commissioned Clark to write the book in order to obscure the true themes and messages even further.🍻

Viewers of this movie in their home will never get the experience we older viewers got when we were in a movie theatre in the dark with the sound and vision filling our senses. Try to create that same setup at home as well as you can. This is not a movie. It is a mind altering experience.

In the book, Dave is just talking to HAL one moment and kinda lets it slip, "Hey dude, I might disconnect you if you keep acting weird." 🤣 Nice! 👍

Hey Adam! I dropped a like, and added the video to my watch later playlist... 2001 is a book that is on my "I want to read this" list. Haven't read it yet. I recently read "Childhood's end" by the same author and man... what a book! Hence my interest in reading 2001 and Rama's Rendezouv as well.

the book's ending is a lot more chilling: the star child detonates the nuclear bombs, deployed by nations on earth, flying around the globe to erase the current population to start a new breed of human kind that's more peaceful.

Hey Adam, I'm here again to say I've just finished the book. I'm pretty happy to say that I read it almost "blind". I mean, without knowing much about it. I also haven't seen the movie to this day yet... and what a weird feeling the book left on me. By all means, it is not a "bad" book. It just lets you in a state... like "what did I just read?" Or "what just happened?!" For me there are two very good moments. When the book shifts from the guy on the moon reporting the monolith (Floyd, I guess) to the space ship Discovery, it made me go: "hey, what happened next in the moon?!" And then after following Dave for two long parts in the book just to find out HAL's true intentions and the true purpose of the mission... it was a big "wow" moment! As if I was getting to know things alongside Dave himself. Also, the end... I wasn't prepared for it. All the "trip" (if you know what I mean) of colors, and shapes and feelings... what a trip! Never saw the StarChild coming! Because I never saw the movie before! What an ending. It made me think about what comes to us after death. As I saw Dave going into the monolith and all the things he lived there as an after certain death experience. Only to be reborn. Not gonna say it's my new favorite sci-fi book ever, but it is a great book. More than that, a reading experience. If that makes sense.

A nice, concise overview of the film "2001." Since the movie often confounds first-time viewers, if you could do a two-minute "spoiler free" intro to "2001" I think that could be pretty popular. Your examples of movie-book differences are good. For a 10-minute video, you hit the right highlights. A few points for your consideration: "ahead of its time" - 2001 is not simply ahead of its time; it is a singularly unique cinematic work. "one of if not the greatest artistic collaborations of all time" - Hyperbole and grammatically clumsy. "Among the great artistic collaborations..." is more fluent and defensible. "one of those movies you either love or hate" - I think it's one of those movies you either love or didn't understand :) What's with the Ebert-on-helium voice? In the book, Hal attempts to kill Dave by depressurizing the ship, not locking him outside in a pod as in the movie.
