Replacement of an AC Compressor Clutch on a 2001 Buick Park Avenue. The Bearing inside the Compressor Pulley was making a horrendous noise when the clutch was not engaged. When the AC Clutch engaged the noise went away. That's indicative of a bad bearing on the AC Pulley.

Good video. I have a 1995 Olds Ninety-Eight Regency, with the GM 3800 engine, and my clutch works intermittently, and comes on if you hit it with a stick! Your video confirmed that I can do this job without removing the compressor from the vehicle. Thanks.

Thanks a lot for this, my Mom just passed me down a '00 LeSabre and the A/C has only been blowing hot air. I'm thinking of replacing both the Compressor and the Condenser (possibly a leak, used some weld but I prefer keeping things in neat condition). Did a mach run of replacing the Condenser but wasn't exactly sure of how to replace the Compressor but I'm a little more confident. Should definitely look to add a "Tools I Used" list in future videos if you don't already. I know this is a little old..

Thanks Charles. Have the same car (& color lol). Same problem. Have the parts & install kit so ready to go. Don't know what part of country you are in but here in New England, the brake lines rust terribly. Recently upgraded to all new Stainless brake lines (9 piece kit was relatively inexpensive) I think $150. Putting on new fuel line kit soon as well ($178 delvd) for same reason. Not necessarily a GM fan but I inherited this car and I am impressed with the ride, handling & fuel economy of the 3.8. 130K and runs like new. Near new Michelins, all new brakes, newer rear shocks, all new hubs and synthetic oil since new...what's not to like lol.

It appears you had the bolt "point" resting directly against the end of the compressor shaft when pulling the clutch coil? I was reluctant to do that but since it appeared it wouldn't need much pressure to pull coil I tried that without success. So then I had a puller from AutoZone used to pull the clutch/serpentine belt pulley and used the bushing from that hich has a recess on one side for the compressor shaft and rests on that side against "upper pully race". Then used the 3 finger puller with the bushing and was able to pull the coil off with that. Having said that now I'm concerned if using the 3 finger pully the first way caused any problem to the compressor shaft etc. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated as I couldn't find much on taking the clutch coil off of GM auto compressors with pullers and had to wing it somewhat on this. Hoping the compressor shaft wasn't somehow damaged!

It appears when you were pulling the belt pulley that you may have had the center nut that was removed at the beginning, with the puller bolt in center of that on compressor shaft.. Perhaps to help prevent the center bolt of puller from slipping off. Is that correct? Also it appears there is a smaller snap rind down inside the belt pulley. Perhaps related to the coil. Can you clarify what that smaller snap ring is for? I'm guessing the smaller snap ring doesn't get removed.

Hi, I was able to get clutch pulley pressed on. Though I wanted to use it to make sure the coil was fully seated. I don't think it was off much but wanted to be certain. When pulling pulley/bearing onto pulley bearing race, there was a pop sound and the puller tool became tighter. However in feeling behind the pulley near base of coil it seemed the clutch coil sticks out a bit past the pulley, I checked to see what amount of gap there is now between the inside of pulley and the top face/insulator on coil and there is approximately .080/5/64/2mm space in that location. The pulley spins freely without any obvious signs of rubbing on coil. I could probably get big snap ring on but again wanted to make certain coil is fully seated. I know I overthink things but not having done this before am trying to insure its correct.

Did you have to somehow mark where the clutch connector was located on compressor prior to removing it? Do you know if a 3 prong removal tool is required to remove the coil on a 2002 Buick Century? I ask on puller as a 2 prong tool didnt come with the "deluxe" removal/installer tool kit I got from AutoZone.
@CharlesAndCars
@CharlesAndCars 3 года назад
You don't have to mark where the clutch connector is. Just note the orientation of where the electrical connector is and put it back in the same orientation. I believe the Century would be the 3.1L and I think it's a press on clutch the same style as the Park Avenue. Don't know if the 2 prong would work ok or not. I have a 3 prong and that's what I used, but you could probably use a 2 prong as well.

Hi, Sorry but another question: I saw at approximately the 8 minute mark in video that you were using the pulley installer with the main parts of the tool and a large washer and nut apparently for spacers etc. Can you tell me what size that washer was and what part of bearing (inner, outer race or both the washer was pressing against? I got ahold of a loaner tool for the bearing race tool for second part of pressing pulley on but need this other info to determine what else I need to do the first part of install. Maybe I could find a large washer like that at HDW. store.
@CharlesAndCars
@CharlesAndCars 3 года назад
Don't know what size it was. Just big enough hole for installer bolt to go through and small enough OD to fit inside the pulley. That was pushing against the inner race of the clutch and pulled the pulley flush to the hub.
@Dave-jc6ky
@Dave-jc6ky 3 года назад
@@CharlesAndCars I found a complete bearing seal race installer set at Autozone and the large side of one of the "disks" fits right into theclutch pulley opening on top of the bearing. There are three Bearing "stop tabs "that one side of the bearing rests up against. The disk I was going to try to use fits perfectly inside those three bearing stops and the outer edge of race contacts much of outer edge of bearing race and of course covers the rest of the bearing in similar fashion as the washer you used. Do you think it sounds fine to use this disk this way to press the pulley on part way and finish with the larger disk you used before installing large snap ring? In this way the "disk sits flush against top face of bearing. I could send picture if there were a way to do so.

Then when done pressing the coil on with the use of the pulley without the bearing you simply lift the old pulley out without need of a tool. Thoughts?
