I unironically love that movie. The original finale was going to have a creature that was passed the human stage of evolution. The Director felt like it was not epic enough for a finale. also this movie was originally designed to be a serious sci-fi thriller. that is why the science is so well thought out. good movie. Enjoyed it.

@@vice.nor.virtue As a kid I was so inspired by the idea that I wanted more fight scenes with things like the alien apes. I spent $30 at Barnes & Noble to buy alien versus predator in an attempt to scratch that itch. absolutely loved that movie too but for a completely different reason. I feel like a lot of people are dismissive of evolution because it is a comedy. I have heard them call the finale stupid many times. I think that is because they are braced for it to be stupid. It is absurd but it is not stupid. I feel like if it had been treating itself more seriously then the audience would treat it more seriously. probably would’ve done better as a movie in the box office. I wouldn’t of liked it as much though

These things formed huge algae mats that were the dominant form of life on earth for... Basically 2 billion years or so from when they evolved in the Archean until the Precambrian. We know about them because they built up in layers and just kept going, generation after generation. There are places you can find these colonies today as fossilized bulb-looking things called Stromatolites.

@ Roenoke Gaming. Biomedical scientist here so I have a fairly limited genomics knowledge but, if the organism has ten base pairs as you say at the start of the video rather than the usual 4, this would surely increase the chances of mutations almost exponentially? Also, the other cellular and molecular differences in an organism with ten base pairs in its DNA would be interesting to say the least. I'm not a proteomics expert but the protein possibilities, and ergo intracellular pathways etc, would be worth an entire video itself. Awesome video as always by the way! I admire the way you dissect what is going on in classics like this with so much grounded scientific analysis. Kudos.

This is a unique thing, as the cartoon Alienators: Evolution Continues, is a continuation of this movie. There may be more information to take from to get a clearer picture, and possibly add additional info. Plus i recall one episode of the aliens being immune to Selenium itself because it was a Mutant strain affected by exposure to Nacho Cheese. They were stopped by a mix of Selenium and Nacho Cheese. Could we have a revisit to see if the science from the movie changed or actually stayed the same in the cartoon?

I love this movie cause it was made in my hometown of Page Arizona! I've hiked where the giant alien is before! The local community college is actually called Coconino Community College, while the scenes don't actually show the real college, its a lot smaller. The ending scenes took place on the playground of Lake View Primary School, and the caves they go through are actually there and house thousands of bats during their migrations every year. This movie is so cool to me, especially since every once in a while they show off Lake Powell in the background. However, we most definitely do not have a Mall, so guess its some fictional extra large Page Az. The very last scene of the dragon flying through what we call "The Cut" is really cool to me. As for the breakdown, I'd have never considered ammonia to be an analogous fill in for water for life. Its an interesting take. Guess its up there with the ideas of Silicone-based life, but at least the ammonia one has some real processes on Earth that we can prove happen in nature for metabolic pathways.

Great movie, one of my all time favorites. Too bad you haven't covered any 40k stuff in a long time. The orks are particularly fun since they're technically sapient fungi. Their spores also terraform whatever environment they end up on to provide food and support for the ork boyz.

And they can psionically alter reality by lots of them believing things. Red vehicles are faster because everyone knows red's the fastest! Their technology can legitimately be fixed by hitting it a few times because everyone knows that's what you do to fix an engine. Actually, most of their tech shouldn't mechanically work in the first place but does because they believe "yeah, it's got lots of gauges and tubes and technical things, that's legit!". I've heard they can achieve a type of cloaking by wearing purple because "Well have you ever SEEN an Ork wearing purple?! EXACTLY! It's the colour of stealth!" but I'm not sure if that's actual lore or fan meme fun. :P

as a kid it always made me sad when this movie ended because I found all these new creatures evolving from scratch into new things so fascinating that I always thought the movie was too short because it left me wanting to see more about the creatures but it all ended always too quickly for me :c specially when they reach the primate stage, I wanted to keep learning about what they would be able to do next and what would happen when they reached human level, but then they died u.u maybe I could ignore the ending of this movie and connect the moment the primates break out from the caves in Evolution with the moment apes break out in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and have a full new movie

Wait, wouldn't there be other isolated cases of these creatures happening in other areas of that Earth or did the other asteroids disintegrate while falling through Earths' atmosphere? That's something I've always wondered about because when we see the rock (I forgot what it's classification would be, sorry) breaks apart, there are a few sizable chunks hurling towards Earth, so maybe the TV show of this movie (yes it got its own TV show) wasn't as far off as some may expect. Also, side note, these things in the TV show developed an immunity too- . . shoot, forgot the name of the chemical in Head-N-Shoulders, um, that chemical and like any other 1990s-early 2000s cartoons, the crew had too kill these things with lasers and such.
