Not even close. They barely beat tiny eastern Washington by 2 points. Had a relatively soft schedule that year as there were only 3 other real contenders in the conference that year in UW, UO, & USC. They lost one of those games and didn't win either of those other two convincingly. Off the top of my head I can think of 4 squads from the state of Oregon that were superior to these soggy beavers.
#5 OSU LB DARNELL ROBINSON used to coach me at PC (JUCO) 07-08. I was young dumb and arrogant, relying only on talent and not hard work. Coach Robinson always tried to push us to be great. Always remember him saying. "EASY TO BE AVERAGE,HARD TO BE GREAT." That hit me hard now that I'm grown. Thank you coach I understand now.
Man, no. Oklahoma blew out #1 Nebraska, blew out #10 Texas, beat #2 kstate, twice, and then held the nation's best offense, and Heisman trophy winner, to 0 points.
@@johnwaffleh2p70 maybe nowadays, sure. But back then, no. The big12 was probably the best conference from 98-08. Kstate finished 11-3 and beat Tennessee by 2 scores in the cotton bowl. Nebraska finished 10-2 and put 60+ points on northwestern in the Alamo. Either way. OU held the Heisman winner and #1 offense to 0 points. Osu vs ou probably would've been a better game, but well never know
@@mathisalexander2446I put together a list of National Champions by conference since 1970. SEC has 20, but Big 12 has 12 which is by far the second best of the Power 5 conferences.
This team was ELECTRIC. They should have played in the National title and would have won it 💯. Their only loss was by 3 at Washington whom they shared the Pac-10 title with. And they were hosed in that game due to phantom holding calls…
Smith now has a blueprint from Dennis as shown in this bowl game. . Winning ways ahead for Oregon state. This only makes the competitive pac 12 even more competitive.
@@Manny______ I don't disagree, smith's only coaching mistake was against Arizona going on 4th down from around 20 yards. I am sure you remember. They lost by 3 in a winnable game.
Was just going to make this comment. I vaguely remember watching this game but I don't remember this. It definitely looks like he dropped the ball early.
I noticed that too. It seems crystal clear that he drops it before the goal line. Granted the broadcast angle is behind, so I guess it’s possible but I am 99% sure you’re right. Got very lucky. That would’ve sucked to negate that play over that.
My seats were right on the goal line, and I noticed right away he dropped the ball early. Oh well, Oregon State has had countless bad calls against them over the years.... so we'll take that one. That was one fun experience, seeing ND get humbled in person.
@@irishcole3516 Yes, that was humbling. And expected. Nearly half of OSU's starters entered the portal or opted out of that game after the team lost its coaching staff to Michigan State. It was a shell of the team that lost to Washington by 2 points just 6 weeks earlier. ND had quite a few missing starters too, but they showed how much depth they have. Impressive win for the Irish.
I forgot just how good that Oregon State defense was. By the end of the season, this was the best football team in the nation and 1 unfortunate 3 point loss in Seattle to the Huskies ruined the perfect season.
Did u enjoy this year ND destroyed u guys 🤣.. and don’t give me that crap about opts outs.. our starting quarterback and running back opted out along with other key defensive players .. we just had more depth and buried your bum ass team
I was there..”Rudy Rudy” “over rated” 👏👏👏 more like the dying Irish ☘️ They had to stop the game when the mascots got into a knock down drag out! Leprechaun 🍀 threw the first punch I thought it was great that even third string got play time for this bowl game. BEAVES came to play!
@@minnielady7876 Ehh, consistently ranked 2006-2009. Ranked top 10 at one point in 2012 too. They've had some good teams since, but not close to the 2000 level.
2002 and 2003 they were relevant, they had Steven Jackson, Derek Anderson, mike hass, James Newson, etc. 2006, giant killers 2, upset #3 USC had great players like yvensen Bernard, Matt Moore, sammie straighter, etc, 2008 Rodger brothers James & jacquizz & upset #1 ranked USC, 2013 they had the best receiver in the country Brandin Cooks
Yes that 21-19 win over Eastern Washington and that loss to Washington definitely are marks of the best teams in the state of Oregon lol. Better teams: Oregon 13-2 2014 (Rose Bow Champs / National Championship Appearance) Oregon 12-1 2012 (Fiesta Bowl Champs) Oregon 12-1 2010 (National Championship Appearance) Oregon 11-1 2001 (Fiesta Bowl Champs) Just cuz Beavers make it to a big bowl once in your lifetime, doesn't mean they're the best team ever in Oregon. LOL!!!! This was a very good team, but certainly not the best. Maybe top 5.
