In this video, I demonstrate the steps required to remove and replace the fuel pump in my 2001 Isuzu Rodeo with the 3.2L engine. I replaced my pump for two reasons: 1) The fuel sending unit had failed and was no longer sending accurate readings to the fuel gauge and had caused check engine code P0463 to flash, and 2) I had low fuel pressure at the fuel rail, which I believe was causing the vehicle to run poorly.
I saved myself over $600 by performing this repair myself. However, please only attempt this if you feel you are capable of doing so, and please be very careful when working under your vehicle and when working around the fuel tank. Use caution! I take no responsibility for your safety.

Thanks for watching!

Thx for your videos Matt. They're really helpful as I'm sure you know, they don't sell those things anymore. So they're somewhat rare.

After driving for sometime the vehicle starts jacking and it's pump failure or no spark from ignitor.

This video was spot on! I really appreciated your diligence and your courtesy! After completing the task my gauge only went up to quarter of tank??? Any suggestions???

Excellent video. I am just about to tackle this project on my 1999 rodeo and this has given me the info I need. 2 questions for you. Which pump did you order from rock auto and would you still happen to have the wiring harness info you mentioned? Thanks again for a great video.

***** From this repair, I've noticed slightly better performance. The sending unit was bad which is why I replaced it. I'm having some issues with misfires when the engine starts before it warms up though. Going to do spark plugs and wires this weekend. Just hoping no oil leaked in there.

@matt payne can you replace the fuel tank pressure sensor without dropping the tank?

Super helpful. As a point of reference, what was your MPG before change out and after?
@mattpayne4087
@mattpayne4087 9 лет назад
Mark Hoferitza Mark, I haven't done a thorough calculation since the repair, but my wife says it's been average about 16-19 mpg since the change-out, though that encompasses quite a range of driving habits (around town, highway, etc.). Based on my records, the average economy prior to the change-out, over the past ~2 years, was about 15.5 mpg. However, I should add that I still don't think I've solved all of my gremlins. The vehicle still seems to sporadically lack power, and I'm starting to wonder if one, or both (I have the stupid CA emissions system) of my catalytic converters are clogged. I've been super busy recently and haven't had the time to keep diagnosing...but I hope to get it sorted out sooner rather than later...

+Joe W Thanks Joe! I am fortunate that winters here are not usually too bad. We probably only have enough bad weather for the roads to get treated 3-4 times each winter, on average. That definitely helps preserve vehicles.

Hey its me again and i have replaced many things fuel pump fuel filter coil packs and im still having the same issue now it runs a little better but after me driving it for a while still wants to back fire and die but i can start it back up and it idled fine

@mattpayne4087 9 лет назад
Aaron Freeman Aaron, have you checked your fuel pressure since you replaced the pump? I recently discovered that my fuel filter, which was less than 1 year old, had gone bad. I replaced it, and it made a noticeable difference in the way the engine ran.

Did you use 3 ton or 6 ton car jacks? about to do this. cheers
@mattpayne4087
@mattpayne4087 8 лет назад
+KoolKatJazz I believe my jack stands have a 6 ton capacity. Just use caution when using jack stands, no matter their weight capacity. It's a good idea to inspect them for defects before use, even if they are brand new. I saw a few brand new stands in the store that had very poor quality welds. Just be very careful. Good luck with your repair!

Got a question i have gauges but there not for a fuel system can i use them to check my pressure on my fuel system
@mattpayne4087
@mattpayne4087 9 лет назад
Aaron Freeman Aaron, what kind of gauge is it? I'm not really sure about this, but if it's for air, I don't know if that will work. If it's a pressure gauge for another type of liquid, I suppose it's possible to use it if you have a schrader valve connection on the gauge, and the pressure range on the gauge is in the right neighborhood (0-40-50 psi). You should be getting pressure readings between 30-40 psi.

The jack handle is under the rear seat but too bad there's no access hole for the gas tank under there.

my fuel gauge isnt working on my 2000 isuzu rodeo. is it the sending unit i need to replace? you seem like one of the few guys that actually know how to fix a rodeo lol
@mattpayne4087
@mattpayne4087 8 лет назад
+chuckwagon1971 Sorry for the delayed response! Yes, more than likely, your fuel sending unit has gone bad, causing the fuel gauge to malfunction. Since you have to remove the gas tank to get to the fuel sending unit, I'd recommend just replacing the sending unit and pump both, so that you don't end up having to re-do the whole process again soon to replace a failed pump. Good luck, and thanks for watching!

I have a 1998 Honda Passport, would this video be the same for that?
@mattpayne4087

Yes, other than some potential minor differences due to the differences in model years, this should be very similar on your vehicle. The Passport was a re-badged Rodeo. Good luck, and thanks for watching!

So was the car starting though? Or okay I see that it does turn on... my car wont turn on at all and we've replaced the fuel pump fuel even with a 30 amp one.. I'm guessing the fuel pump needs to be replaced from what the mechanic said and it will be $450.
@mattpayne4087
@mattpayne4087 9 лет назад
***** Hi Briana, yes as you noted, my vehicle would run and would drive. I'm sorry I'm just now responding to you - I have been swamped recently - but if you are still trying to troubleshoot, I would first check the fuel pressure at the valve that looks like a tire valve on the fuel rail. You can buy an inexpensive fuel pressure test kit at Harbor Freight for about $20-$30 (www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=fuel+pressure+test). Relieve the fuel pressure by pulling the fuel pump fuse and turning the engine over a few times, then screw on the pressure tester and turn the ignition to "on" but don't start the engine. You should read between 34-38 psi I believe. If your fuel pressure is very low, that would explain why your engine will not start. If that is the case, you may want to check the fuel filter to see if it is clogged. It is located next to the frame rail below the driver's side door. You should be able to blow through the filter easily with your mouth (don't actually put your mouth on it - try to find some clean rubber tubing to connect to the input side and blow through that). If it is clogged, purchase a new filter and then do the fuel pressure test again. If you have good fuel pressure but the engine will not start, then I would suspect that you have a problem with your ignition system (spark plugs or coils). Good luck. Let me know if you were able to figure it out. Thanks for watching!

***** No problem at all! It's getting towards that time of year everyone is busy. I ended up getting the fuel pump replaced and the car is starting okay now. I just have to let it warm up for a few minutes once it is on, before I can take off. Thank you for the reply.

Before I did anything to this vehicle (including washing it), I'd have the frame checked. Great vehicle marred by a horrible frame that is absolutely dangerous.
