2001 Maxima - Starter install
“Mad Max” gets a new starter
other years of Maxima for the 3.0L and 3.5L v6 are similar in how to replace the Starter. Along with many others.
Few days after I had replaced O2 sensor (B2S2) the car just wouldn’t start. I gave the starter solenoid a few taps with my pry bar and then car started. This indicated to me that the starter solenoid was going.
Since I have a lifetime warranty on the starter . The part will be free to me. I decided to just replace the starter. The install took me about 2 hours. Tight quarters space for the starter.
Quotes from yourmechanic.com. To replace this starter run about $322 on this car.
Tools used
- socket set 3/8 and 1/4 drive
- Socket extensions
- Metric wrenches
- Breaker bar
- Screw driver
- Angle needle nose pliers
- Flashlight/drop light/head lamp
starter had warrantee on it so I got it from local auto parts store rather than from online store ebay or RockAuto

Similar situation. My son's 2001 starter just went. I appreciate your vid as it's real-world as to what you have to go through to get TO the starter. You're a better man than I am. I'll be swearing up a storm if I have the same issue with the air filter hoses.

Thanks, this was actually the first time I have ever changed a started myself in this car solo. I had replaced a starter before in a 1977 Celica . And that’s in a different spot since and easier to get to. it was RWD car.

thanks, I am just trying to keep it going for a little bit longer. if I would of had to pay out of pocket to get this stuff done at a shop over the past 16 months or so it would of been cost too much to keep the car. Thru smart parts selection, and existing parts warrantees it has been manageable. There are still outstanding issues of - P0744 Transmission - Rear Main Seal Leak/oil leaks. P0744 : maybe needs shift solenoids block or could be torque converter or 1 or more clutches. It will slip out of gear in 3rd if you floor it but if you let off the gas it slips right back into gear. It use to be very bad shifting, undrivable, until I started a slow Transmission Flush via 3 drain and fills with few thousand miles between each. Switched to Full Synthetic ATF and used Lucus and SeaFoam Trans Tune. Oil leaks : I have been using High mileage oil which helps, along with AT-205 re-seal. Additionally switched to 10w30 and use oil stabilizer

I have a grinding starter and an EGR flow error code, does it makes sense to do both of these at the same time?

not sure. but do take care of them soon. if the starter goes, you will be stuck. sometimes a light tap with pry bar on solenoid or starter will get it going . that's what got this one going to get home. but if you need to take off Air box to get to EGR then yah it make sense todo both at same time, because you have to take off air box anyways.

warrenty I had on existing starter was from Autozone, Duralast Starter. Its the 3rd time its been replaced, but only had to pay for the first starter, after that since its lifetime warranty its been free for the part.

Might also consider parts from rockauto.com If I hadn’t had warranty on the part I likely would of gotten the new part from rockauto.com
