80lbs of crap in a 4lbs bag. Never heard that one before but it's dead on for describing how Mazda stuffed that 2.5L engine in that engine bay. It's beyond cramped. You have to take multiple layers of things off sometimes to get to a component.
Steve, thanks for posting this video, it was a great help. As another aircraft mechanic I always try to find manuals for any cars I work on. Where did you find the service manual for this car?
Hi William, To be honest I don't remember. In this instance google was my friend and I got lucky. I also own a zx2 and ended up buying factory service manuals on ebay. Cheers Steve
They stopped production on the Probe and MX6 in 1997. The 1998-2002 626 is the last generation of the 626. It has an updated version of the engine and transmission making it better in every way than the 93-97 versions in terms of engine/transmission. The interior and exterior are not as well regarded as the 93-97 though.
for the balancer put a pipe breaker on it and turn over the engine over.... this is the only way i got mine off to tighten it i shoved many of feet of rope in the 1st cycler head on the up stroke make sure you piston is all the way down then fill then you can tighten it back down
Stevie!!!! What about getting that dang alternator idler out once its unbolted?!?!? The sleeve around the top bolt is so long. it wont pass between the front of the motor and the frame rail. That's what I'm stuck on. Please respond, This thing is in pieces in my landlord's driveway and the weater out here is ghastly right now. Many thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
It's been a while and I'm not sure I took the following approach on this vehicle but on occasion I have used an angle grinder to cut a notch in the metal so I can get the bolt out..
Hey! Thanks for such a quick response! Not long after I asked, it occurred to me that I was trying to remove the whole idler assembly, wheel, mounting bracket and all. If I pull the wheel off the bracket, that ought to be small enough to squeeze through. Thanks again, Wish me luck!
What is the reason for removing the harmonic balancer......does it have to come off to replace the water pump or was your harmonic balancer in need of replacing?
i have a 2000 mazda 626 and notice it was leaking coolant after i was driving and over heating. Mechanic dude said i need to replace the whole 9 yards radiator and everything all hoses. but i think its the water pump only. It leaking under the car under the plastic splash guard it has. Umm yea but when i drive it now ( Knowing it will overheat) it starts off cold then eventually longer i drive it will overheat but i dont allow it to get to that point so is it possibly the water pump right
Young Visionary I would take off the timing cover and pressure test the system.I think You can rent a pressure tester from autozone and you can buy one for about $70.It would be better to get an accurate diagnosis rather than guess and throw parts at the issue. There is a weep hole in the water pump which is designed to give an indication of early failure. cheers steve
I’m hoping anyone can respond if they’ve gotten the upper and lower timing belt cover? Or the whole thing? I can’t find the covers and I need to replace mine. Anyone help please
Hello. Im hoping you can help me out with my 2000 mazda millenia 2.5L. I recently replaced the radiator and after that the check engine light started blinking. Diagnostic says misfire on cylinder # 5. There is oil in one of the spark plugs as well. This leads me to believe I need to replace the valve gakset. Also, my car is still overheating. All the hoses are good but still overheating and coolant leaking from passenger side. Touched bottom of the upper radiator hose where I pour coolant in and it was wet. So leak could be coming from there. Also im wondering if the thermostat could be the problem. Where is it located in the 2000. Ive had conflicting reports as to its location. Thanks.
+TheSouthernTank SouthernTank...My understanding is there are 2 versions of the 626 for this year .A 4 cylinder (FS ) and 6 cylinder (KL..The one in the vid) . If you take a look at the service manual in the link above the comments look for info for the stat on the FS model...cheers ..steve.
finally found it was inside a housing that bolts to the side of the block and the distributor was 4 bolts...got it flushed twice the gaskets all replaced and sealed. long day. ps. was the v6 model 2001 thanks for responding quickly
If you own a Mazda 626 V6 2001 get rid of it it's garbage on wheels! I had problems with the transmission, power steering, and i had to change the water pump about 3 times!
