The premiere of the Cl-class C215 took place in March 1999 at the Geneva Motor Show, and dealers first models appeared by fall. The car replaced the C140 coupe. Like the S-class sedan, W220, the design of the car was based on a similar layout - thanks to the use of lighter materials for the body and a compact arrangement of components and assemblies, despite the loss of the external volume, the internal one was increased. In general, if critics rated this scheme for a sedan as unsuccessful, since the car lost some of the prestige and authority that its predecessors created, then in a more sporty coupe this scheme very organically fit, creating, in contrast to its predecessor, effects of lightness and power. At the beginning of 2000, the Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG, created by a subsidiary tuning company AMG, joined the range. The main difference was the presence of a 5.5-liter M113 engine (355 hp, 0 to 100 km/h - 5.7 s, top speed 250 km/h) under the hood. The car also had sports brakes, suspension and gearbox.
