Replaced the front struts on my 2001 Pathfinder, with 250,000km. The most difficult problem was the rusty bolts. I had to use a welding torch to toast the sway bar nut and it came off with an impact gun. I thew a wet rag over the rubber boot to protect it. I used lots of grease during assembly, which should be good for another 250,000km.

Had this happen on a older car and just came to the conclusion it was the end of the road for that car. Oncr that spring busted then the sway bar came out, basically the whole suspension was fucked because of it. I tried for days to put the new strut back on before I just scrapped the car

I would assume in Texas, that the body and frame wouldn't rust out? Here in Canada, rust is a big problem. If the vehicle is not rusted out, it was much cheaper to replace all suspension components rather than buy either another used vehicle with potential problems, or new. Every situation is unique. I now see a lot of 'barn" and 'yard' find vehicles being pulled out and refurbished on RU-vid. It might have a lot to do with shortages or RU-vid content? I still drive my 2001 Pathfinder 5-speed that I bought used in 2013, but I also have a 2022 Kona N-line AWD Ultimate.

Nice disposition you have, but nothing in the video shows the actual process. Thanks for talking about it and pointing out things, though.

I have the same truck and boy am I amazed at the utter absence of any problems or issues whatsoever, in the 7 years I've had mine. I guess the CVT broke that wonderful streak for Nissan (that, or Peugeot) because now you no longer hear good things about their cars.
@ya472
@ya472 6 лет назад
I am reluctant to 'upgrade' as there is no suitable vehicle available. I am hoping Nissan puts a good diesel in their smallest pickup, and maybe hook her up to a fifth wheel for travelling. In the meantime, I bought four Pathfinder wrecks of the same vintage for parts, and at 270,000 km have only replaced front springs, both front cv axles, rear bushings, the #1 coil and the MAF sensor, plus repair the headlamp connector behind the battery. PS Two of the 'wrecks' could be road worthy with a bit of work, and flipped(sold). I like the concept of CVT, but it isn't proven durable enough, yet.

That's a good way to do it. I'd do the same thing if I had the real estate. By the way, just got back a few hours ago from servicing my front brakes. They were making some weird noise and I remember having replaced the pads not that long ago. Sure enough, the lower guide pin was frozen in its cylinder. I guess this would have caused the pads to compress unevenly on to the rotor causing the weird noise. Oh, and yea I agree the CVT sounds like a nice theory, but in practice I am wary of how there seems to be a lot of friction going on between the belt (steel or some alloy) and the cones. By the way, talking about upgrades, I would think the 4th gen 4runner wouldn't be a bad idea.

@@ChuddleBuggy I like the functionality of the pre-2004's, so I am not sure I would like a 4th Generation, unless they bring back some of the heavy duty features of the older Pathfinders.

I added another 2001 Pathfinder to my stable. It is an LE automatic model. Picked it up for $1200, replaced the rear link bushings, and the master brake cylinder. It has 240,000km, absolutely no rust, and everything works, except the air conditioning, which I haven't explored yet.(hopefully it just needs the clutch linkage, as it is an easy fix) The brakes and tires are like new and by some of the receipts, it has been well maintained. It is now my main driver and though I miss the manual transmission, I really enjoy driving this vehicle too.

Thank you for this video i have a Nissan Pathfinder 1997 and it wobbles when it 60 any thing I can do to fix that
@ya472
@ya472 3 года назад
Wobbles? depends on the type of wobble. Some wobbles are caused by bad tires, plies separating, some wobbles are caused by worn steering parts, and other wobbles are caused by worn rear suspension parts like link bushings. Everything is fixable, once you locate the problem and the repair is worth saving the vehicle.

All you do is talk about what needs to be done for the repair?? Nothing during the repair? No follow up video? Why post at all??
@ya472
@ya472 6 лет назад
People who have tools and ability to do this job, only need tips and tricks, so no follow up is needed.

@Nunya Dambidniss Could you please translate your statement into English please."You need to aim this at people NOT YOU".
@ya472
@ya472 5 лет назад
As explained, there are two rusty bolts holding the strut to the spindle and three nuts on the top of the tower. Does anyone really need a video of that process ? This is a very simple job, if you jack your vehicle correctly. Jacking and stabilizing is the trick to this job.
@ya472
@ya472 5 лет назад
@Nunya Dambidniss I bow to your wisdom. LOL The video is what it is, and if you wish to post a competing, more professional and polished video, have at it. There are people who appreciate the video as is, and these are people I love to share my knowledge with. I am not posting videos for your amusement and entertainment, it is a repair video. Thick headed people or aliens should not do this repair; quite simple really. Sorry, but when I read your name, this is what I see, "Nunya Dumbass". I suppose it might be inappropriate to mention this, but it probably is something you heard before. I don't mean it to insult you, I just chuckle because my brain is that lame.

Any competent mechanic doesn't need a detailed video of breaking rusted nuts. Do you need some WD-40 for yours ?
