Low power, surging, low crank times, stalling, no restart. False engine speed sensor codes
with codes 329 and 456 being caused by an algae blockage on the inlet of the lift/transfer pump.

115 - Engine Speed Sensor (ESS) Circuit
(PID: P190, SPN: 190, FMI: 2) - No engine speed signal detected at pin 17 of the engine harness (Effect - Engine power derate Possible white smoke)
121 - (Effect - no engine speed and position backup main speed/position sensor
329 - (SPN: 1077, PID: S233, FMI: 12) ECM detected an overpumping malfunction in the Cummins accumulator pump system (CAPS) pump (Effect - Low power, possible engine shutdown)
456 - (SPN :94FMI:10) - Fuel Delivery Pressure - Abnormal Rate of Change

8.3 ISC, now your talking my language! We’ve been running these in U.K. school busses for years. We build Frankenstein CAPS pumps to keep these things alive. They are available in modular pieces, once you see them apart changing the whole thing seems totally insane.

I like it when you repair Diesel engines, it's a fantastic video, in Spain this problem is very common when the engines have been stopped for a long time, a trick to avoid it is to keep the Diesel tank full to prevent humid air from entering the tank and condense water on the walls, which is typical when you park the car at night after driving with it and more in an area with humidity that together with hot fuel makes it more problematic. Normally in Spain we do not like to recommend additives, but when we have algae in the fuel it is one of the few times that we recommend using an additive from a recognized brand such as Wurth antibacterial.

Great video. I'm also a technician, with 40 years experience (on gas engines), and coincidentally have a 2001 Monaco Diplomat with the 8.3L ISC Cummins 330hp. I'm glad you discovered those loosened bolts, which makes me wonder how much they contribute to a common failure on this engine. A lot of people on the forums are recommending the FASS Fuel Systems lift pump and filter system to increase the longevity of the Cummins CAPS system. Apparently one of the things that kills the CAPS pump is small air bubbles in the fuel from the low pressure (vacuum) lift pumps. The FASS system filters out microscopic air bubbles which damage the CAPS pump and the injectors. I now have to wonder how many CAPS pumps have failed because a tiny amount of air is drawn in with the fuel from that leaking gasket you found on the lift pump? You may have saved yourself a CAPS failure down the road, and those bolts will certainly be something I check before spring. Thanks again!

Before I was a car mechanic I was a heavy vehicle mechanic first work on semis and all that good stuff and I did my apprenticeship and some qualified years at Cummins in Australia and we use to get the one way valves clog up due to the inner part of the fuel lines deteriorating just some info for you God bless and thanks for the great content 🙏👍

I've heard about algae in aviation fuel, it grows inside the tanks on the craft. Crazy there are organisms that can live in those conditions!

I ran into this years 40+ years back when I was working at a farm equipment dealership. I didn't know it at the time but later learned that the fuel tanks for diesel equipment are lined with copper to prevent acid buildup and the growth of algae.....not sure about RV's though.

I grew up in a trucking family. My family were Hot Shot Truckers, now called Expediters. We did this late 60's long before Fedx or UPS came around and thru the 90's. We always added 1qt of transmission fluid to the tank once a month to keep the injectors, pump, diesel fuel system clean. Sometimes twice a month depending on ho many miles that engine was used; we did this in the D/FW area. Never had a fuel/contamination prob from our diesels. I dont have any experience with the new diesels - best to use something off the shelf that is approved for whatever engine your running. Thx for the Vid, always good info Edit: As far as what to call your ck valve screen thingy, Im sure the mfg has a name for it but made it imposdible for the DIY to find

Hey Paul 20 years ago working at a Mercedes Benz dealer that black algae caused havoc mostly in the tank and would clog the tank screen. Some tanks had to be removed for the cleaning of the tank. What we did back then was every maint service we added Biobor fuel additive we called it diesel doc back then. I highly recommend you get this and use it as you said at the end of your video. That stuff worked, it was the only one that did and it might have been a recommended product of MB. Get that stuff and use it. OH BTW in the Benz people would have about 1/4-3/8 and run out of fuel on road side we would give them a few gallons and tell them take it to the dealer the sock in the tank was clogged. OH the nightmare back then.

Great video and some really good information. This is the reason i ALWAYS use diesel sdditive. I dont have 8.3l but do have 5.9l in my pusher and dodge pickup. Also have ford 7.3l and have never had a water or algae/fungus issue. After seeing your video i will be changing fuel filters more often. Thanks guys.

Great video Paul. I had a leaking lift pump in our 2003 Dynasty with the 8.9 liter ISL when we first purchased it back in 2007. It was leaking internally and coming out the electrical connector but I initially thought it may be the three mounting bolts like you mentioned, but it turned out not to be. I've seen where people have had those come lose and the CAPS pump sucks air causing cavitation and let go long enough takes out the CAPS pump. I think with the ULSD fuel introduction around 2007 it triggered a redesign because the new lift pump I installed in 2007 had a different part number. I then had a similar issue to yours with fuel starvation on a trip back in 2015. I replaced the filters on the trip thinking it was causing the fuel starvation issue but it didn't fix the issue. Got home and after more diagnosis determined the check valve had become dislodged creating a restriction for higher fuel demand situations. Replaced the lift pump again in 2015 and it was fixed. We've had friends start to have CAPS pump issues over the past several years so a couple of years ago I installed a FASS system on my coach as a preventive measure to ensure I feed the injection pump a positive stream of fuel as well as I can monitor my filter's health through a guage I mounted in my cockpit. Do you still have your coach? I thought you were planning on selling it? Mike

That coupler on the injection pump is called a compucheck fitting. We (Caterpillar) use them for pressure testing of hydraulic. I'm sure I've got a coupler laying around that I could send if you ever need to test again.

Hey Paul, I have been watching your videos for years but just recently subbed, don't know why, I should have done it long ago! I like your style and your approach, methodical and pretty calm. I usually like to use Howes diesel additive when I need an additive. I have found that some products actually promote algae growth! I typically stay away from the kleen flo line, although they might have some good products, diesel additive is not one in my experience. Great video as always!

Having a fuel pressure gauge right before the high pressure pump is a good idea! I ran an Isspro gauge on my 03 5.9 Cummins. Factory lift pumps on those were good for about 100k. I made to 100,900! I ran an Air Dog through my stock filter housing and put the fuel pressure elbow going to the CP3! Gauges are a good thing

I'm sure you've heard it already but testing at "Rated power" is basically at full rated torque. Doing tests like that is just not possible in most cases so Cummins often makes tools for it. The "goofy setup" you mention at 25:36 and the port that blew your gauge off is most likely where they wanted this tool connected. It's nothing more than a measured orifice and a drain hose to simulate a full power condition for the pump. Anyway, great video 👍

That so called screen looks like the top of an oil filter!! Looks like you added more knowledge to your arsenal Paul & Caleb! Diesel engines were designed back when so nothing could stop them from running! You had to pull a lever to shut off the fuel or block the air intake, they fixed that!! Great Video Paul, you probably gained a few more thousand viewers!

Nice video. Looks like some older footage or Caleb got a haircut. 😂 I have an issue on my RV with losing prime and fuel dilution in the engine oil. I got a quote from Caterpillar and they recommended replacing fuel injectors. They gave me the we don’t want to work on it price at $9948.00. I installed a Fumoto drain valve and dumped 2.5 gallons of oil and added a gallon of Lucas oil stabilizer and will do it my self at home. I will start with the o-rings and hope it works before putting a six pack of injectors in it.

I actually did lose my injection pump and had it replaced with a factory rebuild pump. Then I bought a FASS filter system and took the lift pump out of the loop. The FASS pump runs constantly so your injection pump does not have to pull the fuel all the way from the tank. Put in a vacuum on the fuel area exit and the FASS remove the air as it stands for fuel air separation system. I highly suggested for anybody running a caps pump on their motorhome.

Years ago in east Texas I was working at a Chevy dealership. There was a rash of this. Hard starting, stalling, low power. Algae build up in the fuel filter. Apparently a bunch of contaminated diesel had been distributed.

great video. i have a 98 8.3. just went thru a lift pump and eventually caps pump replacement. you really need Insite to see everything. accumulator pressure needs to be around 4000 psi. i also had to replace my ECM - i think due to water getting into it when i pressure washed the engine. DO NOT PRESSURE CLEAN THE FIP OR ECM !!!! once the ecm was replaced it ran fine. then the chinese lift pump failed. oem or fass or bull dog is the only way to go on replacements. and carry a spare. ALSO...ecm's...there is a burgeoning industry in scamming people on ecm repairs...Diesel ECM Exchange is a prime scammer outfit. they happen to be near where i live so i dealt with them in person. STAY AWAY !!!!! my engine has the first fuel filter right after the lift pump, and a second at the rear of the bus. the means the mechanical tranfer pump has to pull fuel about 50 ft before it gets to the injection pump. weak point in the caps system. Fass and Bulldog can alleviate that but i am putting an electric lift pump between the filters running full time at about 10 psi. it has free flow when off. so its fail safe. the caps 2 systems on the 04+ cummin$ have an ecm controlled lift pump that turns on in low pressure situations. great intel here on speed sensors. i learned something. love yer work, dude.....

oh yeah....the qwik coupler is a compucheck fitting. you can read the transfer pump and lift pump pressures there. i also have used it for an air bleed. cranking pressure at that point is about 50-70 psi. lift pump will be 10-15 psi.

Diesel bug is a single microorganism or a consortium (group) of microorganisms that grow on fuels. It includes bacteria, filamentous moulds and yeasts. They feed on the hydrocarbons in the fuel and create biomass, biofilms and damaging by-products. These microorganisms will live very happily in even the smallest amounts of water, often from condensation, and at the interface of fuel and water, where they can create thick mats known as biomass. They can also coat surfaces and ‘climb’ up storage tank walls by creating what we know as biofilm. Diesel bug is often called diesel fungus or algae-though, in reality, it has nothing to do with algae.

Yes sir , you got lucky . there is no question I am a retired Caseih service tech , we sold that engine/fuel system in 80% of what we sold , thousands of units , a couple thought s the INSITE tool (scan tool ) your friend was using was super out dated or a knock off , they went away from that in about 2005 , didnt work then probably will not work now , i know your a teacher , and a good one so you did the proper steps , but you were short on basic info , a " how it work" if your interested i have a training manual from when they introduced the CAPS system in 1999 , just let me know CAPS pumps are problematic , i have seen a tech shoot first and look later when dealing with one ,

I sold it about a year and a half ago, so studying the operation of the CAPS system is no longer high on my priority of things to learn, but thank you so much for the offer!

..... we had to fill the diesel fork hoists at 3pm Daily to prevent Diesel fuel bug Also not allowed to remove the metal fuel tank filler screen insert while refilling diesel Air space in the fuel allows the diesel bug to grow Fill up before the cold of the night sets in Keep your tank full as much as possible Run additive in your tank too . I hopes this helps people understand this issue

Sorry to hear about the big headache problem of the low power situation, but knowing your work approach, you'd fix it. Given the driveability issues and the fuel pressure code, using the KISS principle a decent diesel mechanic would/should have investigated possible fuel restriction, which also would have revealed the bypassed primary fuel filter issue in addition to the sludge build up at the anti-drain back valve. That in itself is puzzling for the formation to occur there. That is not algae, because algae requires sunlight to grow.

Late to the video but you need to make sure it doesn't have a inline screen filter on that rv. I worked on many rvs that have a filter/screen above the rear axle in the supply line before the lift pump and primary fuel filter

Early duramaxes have this same vacuum leak at filter head, but without any lift pump, so it's hard to see. Rebuilds don't really fix, because the housings warp. New housings don't seem to have the problem, even without any obvious dimensional differences, I'm thinking the heat-treatment or metallurgy was revised.

Hey Danner! That lift pump diaphragm is a Check Valve. It slows pressure loss to the High Pressure Pump.I would imagine the Algae was growing from contact with the rubber ?

My 8.3 is doing the same thing right now after I picked it up from storage! on my way to get a camera for the lift pump! Wish me luck! It would barely hit 30MPH and would buck hard and show engine speed sensor codes and MAP sensor codes.

I figured it out! The previous owner installed the wrong fuel filters, the fleet guard fuel filters are supposed to be 30 micron primary and 10 micron secondary. He installed 2 micron filters in both locations because the Napa replacement filters for the fleet guard are incorrect micron rating! Heads up to anyone using filters that are not manufacturer recommend! After countless hours of research it runs like a top now!👍

I assume the injection pump has a return line and the fuel always flow through there at max capacity. Anything growing in the tank would tend to be filtered out running through the fuel system. A filter before the lift pump might be a good idea.

I can't remember exactly, but I know one of the filters was bypassed before I got the RV and I believe it was before the lift pump. I think this was a common bypass as starving the CAPS injection pump would ruin them. But this algae did NOT come from the tank. It grew right there!

​@ScannerDanner on 5.9 trucks most guys buy aftermarket electric lift pumps. They have filter and water separator on the pump to eliminate this issue. Might be a good solution in the long term.

Great video thank you. I have one of these motors in my kenworth wrecker . just curious did yours smoke when it did that cuz I have the same symptoms but mine smokes like a pig when laying into her..

There is no need, that's what the transfer pump is for. To prime the system. The check valve is at the pump itself

It's funny watching you turn into a parts cannon customer. Lol.. buying speed sensors and paying for diags'.. But I get it, sometimes you just don't want to mess with it. I can relate. But it's still funny coming from you.. One of the leading Master Diagnostic Specialists- can still fire the ol' parts cannon once in awhile. :) ... But of course, in the end; if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself.

Hi what was the torque for the 3 11mm bolts on top of lift pump? Mine were loose but don’t want to over tighten. Thanks

I didn't use a torque wrench, just snug them up. They don't need to be super tight

Hey Dan, I just uploaded a video of what happened to me yesterday. What I never see in videos is ways to keep SAFE. My truck started in reverse at full throttle, no idea how or why. Something I did for sure, but I was dang near killed. We see videos every day how to fix things but no videos on ways to be safe. Would you consider doing a video on some tips or something? If it happened to me I know it has or can happen to everyone.

Good suggestion. So many safety concerns when it comes to auto repair! Now I want to know, what were you working on (year, make, model and engine), what you were you trying to do and why was the car in reverse and your throttle wide open?

@@ScannerDanner 87 f150. Needed oil pan gasket. That required dang near pulling engine. Also, removed Smog pump and EGR system. I "THINK" i jacked trans up too much and bent something or forced it into reverse. I did move shifter several times to make sure it was in park. Why it went full throttle, I have no clue. Obviously my fault as it ran fine when I pulled it into shop. If it was just full throttle, I could have shut it off and fixed it but the reverse too. Yeah. It just makes me question myself and instilled more doubt. When you put all you have into something thinking it will be your last great restomod, only to lose everything. It's disheartening. Truck is fixable, lots of body work, new door, glass etc. My video shows the extent of the damage. But it wont fix what ever I did to my engine. I followed every video on how to remove that stuff.

Just hoping a professional such as yourself could maybe help others, and myself to avoid such dangerous situations again in the future. I imagine insurance will give me probably a coupple K at best, Paid a lot more for it though. 70K original mies. So I will be getting something worse with what ever they pay me that will need a lot of work. I need to figure out how to be safer. I do everything alone so if i was to have gotten pinned, I would be dead.

Algae can spread from station to station like syphilis. If you see a Pilot station with zero big rigs fueling there, avoid it like the plague.

They say that algae needs sunlight to grow, but the exposure to air maybe contributed to this. Super algae? Was it algae? Could it be a life form from another galaxy slowly invading our planet??? lol love this comment. Yeah so apparently it isn't really algae but some sort of bacteria? And yes, I think it is plausible that the air from the loose bolts on the tranfer pump was a contributing factor. Or as others have said, I got a chunk of this stuff from a fill-up of my tank, but I doubt this because I did not have this happen again in the years after this was cleaned out and I went through many, many tank fulls of fuel in that time

Tank was clean, as I said in the video. After I cleaned this algae from the inlet of the transfer pump, I did run some algaeside to prevent this from happening again. Drove it for 2 more years with ZERO issues before I sold it

makes me wonder if it leaked fuel out then it would let air in and maybe the oxygen in the air allowed the algae to thrive in that section intil engine was ran again

Not a leak out, but a drain back to the tank. This is normal for this section to be clear of fuel after shut down. Oxygen from the loose bolts on the transfer pump? Not sure

@@ScannerDanner I was thinking the leaking gasket from the loose bolts gave just enough fresh oxygen for the algae to grow. Seems like a big coincidence how close to the leaking gasket your algae was. So perhaps instead of always having fuel additives flowing through the system, just ensure the system is tight with no leaks. Should also run better now with no air being drawn through the fuel system, as you stated in the video.

Common problem run into this all the time even on the Duramax and Isuzu they will throw a pressure regulator code for the same problem Many times people brought the vehicle in and they had new pressure regulators put in and not fix the problem This used to be a big problem back in the day when we worked on GM 5.7 diesel’s. Be careful where you buy fuel

Your problem with your 8.3 forced you to figure out how the system works that is very satisfying isn't it. In the future you need to add the recommended additive recommended by Cummins to keep you out of that mess.

@@ScannerDanner Man!!! thanks for this video my box truck could back on the road if this is my issue. My truck did the same thing as your RV. Also if your RV has one? Check your fuel water separator. I think thats what its called. It has a screen in it, that will collect algae as well...

That was the service info that said that! I believe one of the tests, you actually are introducing a bleed into a separate fuel tank to act as a "load" or volume loss when the injectors would be open more, as a test for the CAPS pump

It means test at rated power condition. Which means driving the motorhome and duplicating the speed and throttle that the problem is occurring at and reading your measurements at that time. Very nice video sir.

@@ironmike742 Lift pump load is governed by PRV and has nothing to do with driving the vehicle. To test lift pump you check pressure and then flowrate. Got correct pressure? Check flowrate. Do that and you will find your problem in minutes.
