This 2001 Toyota Avalon is a very quiet car, so you hear everything! I had a clunking sound that was heard on back roads and I show you how I fixed it. I previously jacked up each wheel and shook them but nothing seemed loose. I also thought the spare tire and/or jack could be making the sound because those were a little loose, but tightening them did not help. I then learned that sway bar bushings could cause this noise, so I gave that a try and found success!

Im at 286k, ive replaced suspension, rack, ps pump/lines, control arms, ball joints, sway bars & front bushings. Didnt think to do the rears since they looked good. Boy was i wrongg, im about to do this now that ive seen this.

And yeah, that front bushing was not fun, took a while with no ratchet wrench

Thanks for this video. I have this same clunk in a 2000 Avalon at 188k miles that I just purchased. Maintenance records show a recent rear strut replacement at a shop. I was wondering how they missed this clunk. 👏🏼

I would never use a impact on them bolts holding the swaybar bushing bracket. Especially on a older car. The bolts are known to break due to rust and what not. You got very lucky the bolts didn't break, if it did, you'd be hearing way more clunkin and trips to the hardware store lol

Not that you'll be changing your sway bar links anytime soon......but if you put a hex driver in your impact wrench and spin it clockwise while holding the 14mm nut w/ a box end.....well, there ya go !!

Thanks for the video. My question is why the clunk when your old bushings looked in decent shape? I have the same situation ("loose spare tire noise" syndrome). Pondering whether to replace or not.

The bushings looked fine, but were actually worn down. The new ones compress a bit when installed so they hold the sway bar a lot tighter.

Did you eventually replace sway bar end links? Those are big culprits.

Great video! Is the part number the same for the front and rear sway bar bushing? TIA!

No, front and rear are separate part numbers

Gotta love how many times you have to rotate a screw when it has no room 😂

Think those are Rhino Ramps. They sell them at Oreillys, Autozone and Walmart I think.
