A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician checks out one of the best Toyota models ever made, The 2004 Toyota Avalon XLS.
In this video we'll do a full inspection and some diagnosis on a 2004 Toyota Avalon which actually belongs to my neighbor that recently bought it for an exuberant amount due to the inflation in used car prices.
This Avalon has a Noise concern which we'll do some diagnosis on and we'll look over the whole car including a timing belt inspection.

I have a 2003 with almost 300,000 miles i do all of the maintenance myself. Oil, changes, timing belts, etc. and suspension stuff. I have had this car since I’ve got married in 2017 I had a Lincoln town car before that piece of crap always breaking the Toyota. Avalon has got me through some rough patches in my life. it drove me from Chicago all the way back to North Carolina. It drove me when I had the flu and Covid. It takes me to work every day. It’s taking me to the beach. It’s taking me to the mountains. It’s taking me all the way down to Florida once. I have used it like a truck moving stuff with it putting stuff on the roof but this car just keeps going. It’s never let me down.

I worked as a salesman at a Toyota dealership in 2004 and recall selling many of these. Yes, they are great cars. I always felt like the Avalon was the Toyota nobody seemed to know about. Obviously, the Camry was/is their best seller, so the Avalon was somewhat overshadowed by it. But dollar for dollar, mile for mile, I think the Avalon is Toyota’s best value. I’m no longer selling cars, but I did just recently buy a very nice, pre owned 2018 Avalon. I love it, too!

My 1MZ Engine in my 2002 ES300 is amazing. I’m the second owner bought it in April 2021 with 161,000 miles. It was serviced at a local Lexus dealership according to the Lexus owners website from day one. the timing belt was done at 88,000 miles also new water pump and valve cover gasket. Last summer had a certified mechanic change out all four struts because the original rear ones were leaking, changed out the original AC compressor (was squealing) and original alternator. All of these parts lasted 19 years which proves the longevity and durability of Toyota/Lexus. Everything works nothing is broken, the car is solid and tight not a creek or rattle anywhere I Did my first synthetic oil change last year at 5k miles. I’ll be keeping this car for 10 plus years!

I replaced all struts f & r with the only oem Sachs or what I went with Japan made kyb. 2004 was an odd year with parts in 2005 new gen. It’s a nice ride now but parts were a headache. Listings that said would fit didn’t sat on the tire had to send back. All in all great car. I’ve seen that 3.0 vvti is in fact non interference engine it won’t hit anything if belt breaks a guy demonstrated it with a junkyard engine it didn’t hit anything but that’s just what I’ve discovered . Love the video man keep up great work

I ran into the same problem with my 05 suburu legacy, the parts for the 04 actually work, the ones for 05 & 06 don't work? Even though it's a 2005?! But I ran into many problems with parts not fitting correctly, so I looked up parts for an 04, 9 out of 10 worked, so I know the pain!

Before buying our 2009 Toyota Aurion Presara we actually test drove a 2007 Avalon and it was beautiful extremely comfortable however we decided in the end to go for the later one we bought mostly because being the Presara it was top of the range and had everything you could think of in it standard. We have never regretted buying it as now it is 13 years old it is still a dream to drive, quiet and very good on the fuel being a 3.5V6 2GRFE very reliable and loved as one of my children. When I first bought my Avalon I put a set of cheap strut assemblies on it but soon found out the hard way that cheap isn't the way to go. They didnt last very long and I recently replaced the front struts again with a pair of KYB assemblies and it was a night and day difference.

When we got our newest to us Toyota, they put OE Spectrum Quickstruts on them and in about eight months, the car would oscillate back and forth so hard as if there were no struts and just springs when going up a driveway from a turn. KYB struts made it like a new ride.

we just got one. an 01 with 158k. interior looks like this. a time capsule . Incredibly clean, rides like a lexus, incredibly smooth, and the sound system is awesome. we had a 2017 crossover that hit 100k and was using oil, and were not going to continue to pay on a vehicle that was eating quarts of oil. so we bought the avalon cash, and love it so far. That's my car! I have a 2004 Avalon XLS that I bought from the original owner. She was 94. Her son had finally talked her out of continuing to drive. It had 83K miles on it and was very well maintained. 3½ years later, I have 145k on it and love this car! It's far and away the most reliable, quiet, smoothest riding automobile I've ever owned. One thing, if you have one, invest is the best tires you can afford. I cheaped-out and the car didn't ride or drive nearly as well as it should. Avalons deserve good tires. I corrected that with a set of top of the line Bridgestones. It's driven like a brand new luxury car since. You are right. it floats. Thanks for the video on the finest of all Toyotas.

You could NOT be more right... My wife happened into an 03 Avalon at 90k miles (from the estate of a long-time employer) and as soon as I drove it, I began a year-long search for another Gen2 Avalon for me. Finally found an 01 at 61k with receipts for every technician's touch since it had 100 miles on it. These are BY FAR the best cars we've ever owned, and that includes a 1969 BMW 2001, which held the top spot until Kittie's 03 came along.

They are definitely nice. The reason I went with a Camry was they're plentiful in salvage yards. I've gotten some good used parts there. When I buy a used car, since I can work on it myself, I just replace most wear out parts. When I bought my used 99 camry, I replaced the timing belt, water pump and the 2 pulleys. I'd recommend doing the oil pump seals too, as mine went bad a couple years later. Lesson learned. I just did the cam and crank seals last year. I just bought another one from Florida, like new, replaced everything in one process. I've a new valve cover gasket, and that plug where the distributor used to go yet to replace. I've done this too on my old one. I learned a lot along the way, that's another reason I've stuck with this year and make. Oh, toyota parts are GREAT and prices are not bad. I've 95,000 miles on my older cars timing belt and water pump, both Toyota brand. I'll probably change them soon, but that's another great thing, non interference engine. If only they had dipsticks for the transmission, I wanted to buy a new one. It should of been an option, I'd of paid it.

Car Care Nut, I really appreciate your logical and careful diagnostic skills. Your ability to problem solve effectively is really rare. My Grandmother passed her 2000 Avalon on to me when I turned 16. Now I am a college student with no money and graduating in one year. The car has 208,217 miles, struts replaced 2019; alternator replaced and new tires 2020; valve cover, intake gaskets, spark plugs replaced 2021, machined rotors and replaced brake pads 2021. Now the speedometer has quit working and the car surges and lags. A local service station shared the error codes with me and says I need a new Air Fuel Sensor B2S1 (P1150) and a new ABS controller (P0500). HOWEVER, he says he can't get the parts for the ABS controller - apparently they don't make them anymore? I called my local Toyota dealer service department and they can't get them either. I watched your detailed video about Toyota Oxygen sensors and you saved me from ordering an O2 sensor when I needed an AF sensor! I think I can replace that one myself. But I have 3 questions: 1) The website where I want to order the AF sensor says I should replace it on both banks. Do I really need to spend $250 and get both, or can I just replace the one throwing code P1150? 2) Will fixing the ABS controller fix the speedometer, or is that a separate problem? 3) Am I crazy trying to fix this if they don't even make the part for the ABS any more? Can I get a used part on Ebay, or am I just trying to beat a dead horse here? I was hoping to get 9 more months out of this car until I graduate. I'm a commuter, so I really need a car, but I don't have a job to get a loan for a new one. I sure wish you were MY neighbor! :) I hope you have to time to see this and respond.
