Hey Guys! This is for non supercharged 1st gen Mini Coopers! I just wanted to document this repair because I felt there wasn't many useful videos on RU-vid documenting this repair in the simplest form. No.........you don't need a special MINI serpentine belt tool or anything of that sort. I hope you guys learn something from this video as I'm just trying to help fellow Mini owners out there, and I don't even have much knowledge of these cars; just my own mechanical skills! PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK ME ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS REPAIR AND FOR ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO KNOW THAT I LEFT OUT OF THIS VIDEO! Thank you very much for watching and again I hope this video benefits you and thanks for watching! Happy motoring! =]

Aww can ya do mine for me? (just kidding hehe) - Good + inspiring video as there's always more than one way to do things, often more cheaply than the official way... as such, many mini-peeps (myself included) thank you for this handy tip :)

I used this method however I'd point out the thickness of the ratchet you use obviously makes a difference. I found that once I got the tensioner locked in the out position, the ratchet was then in a place that made it impossible to remove. Leaving the ratchet in place while I changed the belt was not a problem however and once the belt was replaced and the tensioner back on the belt, I could then remove the ratchet. Only trouble I had was switching the ratchet to the other direction while it was still in place and room was so limited.

BritIronRebel Interesting! Yeah I used a standard thickness ratchet and had none of the problems you mentioned whatsoever. Same year Mini?

@@ComicalCowboy1911 I have like 5 different 3/8 drive ratchets I've ended up with over the years. Even the same company makes changes that cause some to be thicker than others. I even have one that has a type of 3 pointed star shaped selector on the top to switch directions (clockwise/counter) which makes it quite a bit thicker. The one I used was a Craftsman with the button on top to release a socket. It didn't turn out to be a big deal as I was able to replace the belt with the ratchet still in place.

BritIronRebel Yep! And the ratchet I used in the video was one from Harbor Freight lol! But I understand what you’re saying about the different designs and thicknesses.

Hi! Sorry I'm late in responding to your comment. The Charger is doing great! The 5.9 is gonna be built here again pretty soon for more power! Thanks for commenting!

Anyone tried this on the mini s?

From what I understand the Supercharged models have a different style tensioner, so I’m not sure. I’d highly recommend searching for videos on RU-vid or any info you can find from Google. I never worked on a Supercharged model myself so I couldn’t say if this method works the same for the S models.

@@ComicalCowboy1911 thanks, you’re right, they are different. I actually ended up buying the belt removal tool on Amazon and it worked like a dream.
