Please note:
I started this video uninstalling the old cable, however, once I was under the Dakota my phone stopped filming and couldn't get it to continue. So in the video where the shift cable is still connected to the transmission, the new cable was preinstalled. I just went to explain on how to finish it. If you have any questions regarding installation for the shifter cable, just ask.

My wife's 04 Durango shift cable snapped clean off in the steering column section. This vid of yours is the first one I've seen that addressed that end of it and not just the bit at the transmission end. I'll be able to hobble something together to get it to work now . Thank you for that.

@@laravybe7369 what is the shifter position on the transmission when installing this cable?
@laravybe7369

Put it in park.. To find the position on the transmission with a snapped cable, , place the hook that the spring connects to towards the front of the vehicle. That's the park position.

Thank you very much for the video. It was a very big help. I never doubt what a woman can do. We come from a WWII Generation Family where Dad made sure all of his children were treated equally and that my two older sisters knew how to use tools to build and fix things. Your video was a great help as I try to keep my 2003 Dakota SLT 4x4 4.7 L on life support (losing its battle with rust). Finding the right cable was the absolute hardest part. I offer to other Dakota peeps out there Mopar changed the replacement cable some years back to a 5211005AL. You WILL need to slightly oval out the firewall in a 2003 like mine AND remove and install a new retainer bracket next to the transmission because the black plastic piece which snaps into the old bracket is just too big. There are 2 bolts on that bracket and I soaked them with WD40 for a day while I waited for the bracked to arrive at the dealer. They came out with no problem and I reused them. The dealer did not even know about the bracket change (thought I was clueless until I showed them the difference between the old and new cable) until an elderly parts guy worked the problem from 2003 forward and came across a service bulletin in the 2010s mentioning it. Anyway, the new bracket and cable are in, the dash is back together and I am rolling again. Thanks again for the video! I raise my mug to you! 🍻

Excellent information video. I have an issue. White pin is in and both push tabs are out as they should be. Fished cable underneath. pushed the cable through the bracket on the transmission bracket no issues.Then the plastic female end on the cable doesn't line up with the male metal nipple on the transmission shift mechanism. About a quarter inch off, so it just won't snap in. NO WAY. Transmission shift mechanism is all the way back in the park position too. The truck will start and run with cable now unattached in the park position.. I could pull the white pin on the opposite end of the cable and it will allow extra movement to line up and lock in underneath, however this pin should stay on until the end and all else is done like you said in your video. Any helpful suggestions?????? I'll be a thanking you........Pete

Great video cause you covered several things other videos don't. Just changed mine out and was able to because of this video. Just have a question as to why you don't push those things in until you are finished installing?
@laravybe7369
@laravybe7369 2 года назад
They get pushed in last because the cable length is adjustable. By installing first, you can set the cable length needed for your vehicle, remember, one part is made to fit multiple makes, models and years. Once the latches are locked by being pushed in, the cable length is set and can't be adjusted.

I recently installed a new cable on a ‘02 Durango that wouldn’t shift gears at all. Now it shifts gears, but it’s really tricky to get it shifted into park if it’ll engage the park gear at all… I tried making small adjustments based on other videos explaining how to adjust, but still having a hard time getting the vehicle to shift into park… what’s the best way to adjust properly so I can get park gear to engage fully and properly?

I don’t know if mine is semi broke but I had some play on the gears when I bought the truck so I looked at the end of transmission and it was missing a bushing for it to sit on the lever. Fixed that and now it only has play on drive were I have to bump it the truck runs either if I bump or don’t. And now I feel a settle jerk when i slow down.

Have your looked at shifter lever connection? Not the cable connection, but where the shifter lever connects to the shifter lever mount. Try and see if there is any play in that area.

Good job, I have a 2003 Durango, won't come out of park and shift arm wobbles all over. I wonder if it's just the white plastic grommet that holds the cable stiff so it can shift. If so I would only need to replace that yes? I mean it could have come loose the cable right so that it's not pulling on anything or do I really have to replace the whole cable?
@laravybe7369

Sorry for the delayed message. I haven't looked at my account in a while, if you haven't solved this problem yet, I would like to help, however, I'm having trouble with what you are trying to ask. It sounds like two different problems. Are you having trouble with a wobbly shifter lever or did 1 or both of the 2 yellowish-white grommet tabs break on the shifter cable causing a wobble to the shifter lever? If it is the grommet tab, I am unaware if you can just simply replace those. I looked up in my database for the grommet parts and searched the web for an answer, however, I am only finding that the cable itself will need replacement. You can try and replace only the grommets, however, I suggest you go to a junkyard like 'Pick N' Pull' or 'I Pull U Pull' or some related junkyard where you pull the part(s) off yourself and see if it's possible. As for the shifter lever, if it's still wobbles after the new cable is in place or still won't come out of park, 1st look below to the lever on the transmission itself, and see if the lever connected to the cable is properly installed on the transmission; the lever should not be loose, (and make sure your emergency brake is on for this next part) but see with your hand and manually give a little hard nudge to see if it will shift out of and and then back into park. If it does, that is good news, nothing is wrong with it. However, if it feels loose or you feel no resistance, look and see if the grommet ring below the lever on the transmission needs replacing. It will look like a leak is coming out from under the lever, make sure the bolt behind the lever is tight, if not, retighten it or replace the bolt, and make sure the spring connected is good and not stretched out. If all is good on the transmission, then I suggest you replace the shifter assembly on the steering column.

Hi Lara, I am currently in the position where I need to replace the cable on my 02 Dodge Dakota Sport. I've snaked the cable, but the cable seems about an inch or so short to fully allow me to put the car into park. Is there a additional bracket you needed to purchase with the cable? I also purchased my cable from rocket auto. Thanks!

@laravybe7369 Год назад
Sorry for the delay message. I haven't looked at my account in a while, but to answer your question... No, there is no additional brackets. Try re-snaking it another way using the shortest route. If you received the correct part, it should fit. hope this helped. If not get back to me, and we can set up a video chat.

What issue are you fixing? My overdrive is not turning off, even after replacing the button. Is that what you’re fixing here?
@laravybe7369
@laravybe7369 Год назад
This video is not for that issue. However, if you check the fuse already and changed out the OD button, look more towards the transmission. You can try and replacing the temperature sensor on the transmission, and if you haven't done it in the last 2 years, try replacing the transmission fluid and filter as well. It may solve the problem or it may not solve the problem. However, a bad sensor from the transmission can cause the OD light to stay on.

Sorry, I haven't looked at my videos in some time. So I'm sure you must have figured it out by now. However, to help others I will still answer it anyways. Instead of going from the transmission into the cabin, take the end piece that goes to the transmission first. Start taking that end going through the hole of the firewall from inside the cabin going into the engine bay and then connect it to the transmission, after that you can set up the rest of it in the cabin where it belongs.

Okay. Used cable you said, right? Have you tried readjusting the cable length by unlocking the white/yellow-ish adjuster pins? They are located on the cable under the dash. One is square looking and the other is more round. If you got a used one, they will a bit hard to unlock, and they're breakable. So be careful. Once, AND IF successfully unlocking the 2 adjuster pins, you should be able to adjust the cable to your needed length. After the cable is connected to both ends from the shifter to the transmission, simply re-lock the adjuster pins back in place. The other option would be to find a way to relocate the cable in the engine compartment that takes the shortest route to the transmission shifter in the park position. Although, if the adjusters ARE IN the unlocked position and the cable continues to not adjust to the length needed... You may have picked up a seized cable. It's almost unheard of, because it really never happens, however, IT CAN HAPPEN.

Before continuing trying to shift gears or put it in park, ( You don't need to break another cable by stretch it ) Have you tried looking into the shift lever on the column to see if there may be any internal damage? Another thing to look for is debris around the shifter lever connection attached to the transmission, and while your under there, there is a rubber seal under that lever on the transmission. Make sure it's not damaged or leaking. If so replace it. That could be another thing that could caused your problem.

@@laravybe7369 no damage or leaking that I can find on the shift lever underneath, and I can move it pretty freely by hand with a little bit of pressure… with the gear shift all the way up (for park position) it stops at reverse, but if I shift up to park and push the selector toward the dash to its resting place mildly firm it will engage park. But it’s not tight at all when I do that like it’s forcing the gear into park… would the rooster comb in the column have anything to do with the issue? The base of the selector feels tight like it’s rubbing against the bottom of the rooster comb when set in park and first starting to shift out of park

@@user-qb2kv5fq2m It is a possibility it could be the rooster comb. Inspect it for debris, damage, warpping, or if part of the metal weared away from friction.
