Those who made anti Semitic statement against Sarah Hughes failed to note that she and her siblings do.not observe Judaism, and the same with most media negative portrayal of Sarah Hughes. How did Hughes not get 2nd overall for this performance? Sasha was wonderful but with her 6 triples (some of them imperfectly landed) to Sarah's 7 smoothly landed triples, I'm not sure how Sasha's strengths on other elements were that much better than Hughes' strengths. Equal on the spins, yes better for Sasha on the spirals and footwork but not dramatically so. I would say 5.8/5.8 for Hughes and 5.6/5.9 for Cohen.

Sarah was never going to really challenge Michelle on the artistic mark in the way that Sasha could. She also skated a bit slowly. In the end it was Sarah’s consistency that got her that gold medal as Kwan, Cohen, and Irina all had major mistakes at the olympics. Sarah couldn’t really beat those three, but she was always there waiting in case one of them made a mistake.

@ D H I know, but her goal in life was to be an Olympic Champion. She dedicated her life to winning and I remember the look on her father’s face when the line of 5.8 came up for Technical Merit. “Lyra Angelica” was her signature FS, and I know that she appeared on the talk program the next morning and said that she was honored to be representing the USA. So many wrong decisions were made my MK and her team for the 01-02 Olympic season. One of Michelle's wrong decisions was to repeat this SP from 1998. Everyone knows that you can't duplicate a magical performance. Why did she think that she could recreate the magic from 1998 four years later with the sam program was head scratching. Danny Kwan had no business being her coach.
@Dylvente
@Dylvente 6 месяцев назад
I'm not sure I understand. She won the short program at '02 Nationals and Olympics with her masterpiece Rachmaninoff program, and her short program merited 3rd at Worlds with a major mistake in the program. I have watched the '98 and '02 performances several times and not noticed any decline in the quality of the program. Indeed, to the contrary, a better layback spin in her '02 version and a more difficult third spiral position (the catch-foot to the side rather than behind her).
@3l3llala13
@3l3llala13 5 месяцев назад
@@Dylvente Remember that skating is a judged sport. A skater's placement could be do to reputation and/or favoritism also. Both the National and the Olympic judges were generous to MK in 02. I was a fan of MK and was rooting for her, but I thought Sasha's SP outshined MK's at both Nationals and SLC. At the Olympic, Michelle clearly slipped on the toe-pick when picking in for the flip and possibly under-rotated the jump when she landed; It was a miracle that she didn't fall in the SP. There was a strong argument for MK's SP to be placed behind either Irina's or Sasha's. The Olympic judges clearly wanted MK to win the gold medal at SLC, but she had an uncharacteristically poor LP (two jump mistakes, slow skating, deer in the headlights). Coupled that poor performance with Sarah's exceptional skate and the Pair judging scandal, and the judges were left with no choice but to judge the ladies's LP more or less accordingly.
@Dylvente
@Dylvente 5 месяцев назад
@@3l3llala13 All true, I was just responding to the comment that criticized her decision to use this program again. The performance of the program had technical problems at Olympics and probably should have been 2nd or 3rd but her 3rd place finish at the end was not generous (it was fair, though I think Slutskaya was lucky to be awarded 2nd in the long).

I would have given this to Sasha over Michelle. I think Sasha sold the program better, was more spirited, and had a better vehicle overall than Michelle had in Scheherazade, which is quite the generic program. I would have had Nikodinov in sixth, easily, at 5.2/5.4. Not invested in the program at all, very stiff, lots of mistakes, and none of the fire of Ann Patrice and Jenny. Sarah’s team was very smart in redoing the free program for the games, though I do miss the second lutz and the spiral entry into the loop.
