I liked the one I had, I blew it up and sold it to a kid. for 200 bucks. He worked hard and his dad was a toyota mechanic. He turns 16 soon and it already has a 2ZZ swap and 6 speed.
@@jeff346 Yeah but, I would rather help someone out. I could have gotten 3K for it with a blown motor. The kid asked me what I was going to do. I said I didn't know. I asked his dad what he thought about a rebuild. He said it would be a good start for him. So I told my wife I was going to give it away
SW20 was notoriously hard to work on, people who have no experience with these just let shit flow out of their mouths such as sNaP oVeRsTeEr, HaRd To WoRk On
Most common thing said by ever car enthusiast that has never owned mid engine. Why do they say it no F'ing clue it's like they think they're smart I just look and go ok...
SW20 with 3sgte, yeah it’s a challenge to get to engine & components. ZZW30: “So much room for activities” but hey at least it’s not the Twin turbo Nissan 300zx! Great cars but looking just at valve covers 😵
The MR2 Spyder engine is basically maintenance free. Oil changes, spark plugs and the eventual tune-up... maybe ignition coils. The 85-89, 91-95 was a bit harder to access because of the trunk behind engine bay, had to plank everytime to reach anything in there but it wasn't impossible.
Yooo it was great meeting you bro!! Thanks for all the love! This video turned out great and I wasn’t as cringey as I thought I’d be 😂🙏🏼 We’ll catch up again for a meet soon!
Love it the way it is, cf hard top is what I would add exterio wise and front down force requirements. Can't help to wonder how bad you would dust me in the curvy roads lol 😆
I've owned my MR-S for about 6 months now and the amount of attention I get with it is pretty crazy. In my area, everyone either has a Skyline, Silvia, 86, Supra.. all the iconic names.. but no one knows much of anything about my car. Feels awesome when your the only unique car in the car meet out of dozens of the usual suspects.
WOW considering he had a mx-5 and a sp2 S2000 and this is far better his "favorite" says a lot about these these cars Mr2 spyder is soooo awesome , great vid really nice car.
I've owned all 3 and the S2K is my favourite, and still own it. Will have another MRS at some point due to S2Ks going mental in price so will probs get the MRS for track/fun. S2K feels more expensive specially the interior, sounds better engine is s little lazy lower down the RPM you have to work it but each to their own I suppose.
I've had an NA miata and a Mercedes SLK350 (among others, but those are most comparable) and I'd take my spyder over either of those any day! It's just such a special, funky car with so much personality, and to drive it on a twisty mountain road is a downright spiritual experience, lol. Not to mention the ease of working on it.
Initial D got so many people into 90s JDM. The MR2 Spyder is largely considered the least popular generation, hope i can snag one before the value goes up
The values have already went up. The used car market is a mess in general because of covid and inflation. I haven't seen a decently priced mr-s in two years. Used dealers are selling mr-s for 12k and private owners around 8k. Manuals are even higher. I remember when they were 4k all day regardless of trans
wasn't originally a fan of the MRS, but driving Neil's as well as how he has modded it has certainly changed my mind. After some work and summer ends, we'll certainly be taking it back to the track maybe more than we should
Awesome build! Yes these cars are/were hidden gems. This was first car I ever bought and learned to drive manual in. A yellow 2000 5 speed. I put a black OEM hardtop on it with some wheels and exhaust with a Greddy E-manage. It was peppy but eventually I pieced parts together turbo it and just needed custom piping made. Never finished it. I ended up trading it for V6 Sw20. I actually miss both of those cars. If I get another one I’ll follow your similar formula and not worry about power until the engine dies. Funny I have a supercharged AP1 S2K now. Will never ever let it go but would be nice to have another Spyder to go along with it😆
This car are SOOO slept on. Better driving then the Honda S2K and Miata has he confirm because he’s owned all 3. The size is so nice and small. I want one !!
People have different preferences, just because one guy owned multiple cars and chose one over the other doesn't make it a fact that it is ideal for everyone. As an example, I owned 2 NA Miatas, an FC Turbo II, an FRS, and an MR2 Spyder. My MR2 Spyder burned oil like crazy due to the infamous 1zz precat failure issue and I ended up selling it before moving back to a 97 Miata and haven't looked back since.
I agree 100% the Mr2 spyder is a hidden gem of a car , if japan wants to make money!!!!!!!! then make the NEW mr2 spyder and i will buy one . i had a yellow mr2 spyder 2004 it was very dependable everywhere i went people would take pictures of the car i even heard people say as i go out to eat very nice restaurant they would say that gentleman is rich ......
Look into the 2ZZ. It is a major improvement. The 1ZZ has some issues you may run into like me. I jumped the cam chain and smashed the crap out of the valves and piston surfaces. It pulled the cat material into the intake.
@yah yeet Yep, I saw that in the swap kit, they tell you to keep it. You can also go K20. But I dunno about feelings on mix branding. Doesn't bug me but some folks hate honda and brand mixing.
Top-down motoring is the best. If this guy is a fossil, then that makes me pre-fossil. I'm the boring old fart that prefers my cars all-original. That said, I really like this car. Ironically, while I've never really been drawn to black cars or the MR-S specifically, this car looks fantastic. A very unique ride and something you definitely don't see every day. Overall it appears to be an incredibly well balanced build, wouldn't change a thing.
DBZ baby! A car & fitness channel. Dope to see people still modding these cars. I also never seen the engine to one also. Nice to see. I also never heard of people tracking them either so cool.
@@fsega3669 yeah...wish it was that ez with him 😑 lol. Hes doesn't want to get rid of it but he doesn't really take care of it either. Idk, imma get my hands on it one way or another 😉
I have a 01 2zz frog.. and i am on bc coilovers running 15x8 with 0 offset with 225-45-15 hankook rs-4s I had to hammer the front wheel well seem and take the fender trim out and cut the edges where the fender and bumper bolt to eachother and i had to roll + pull the front fenders a LOT hahah Havent lowered the rear yet cuz i wanna get the fenders rolled / pulled correctly ! But 225s do fit with proper spec’d offset wheels..
Damn this looks almost exactly like mine. Body is in wayyyy better condition though and I unfortunately as a kid lost my official TRD kit. Only thing that survived my early 20s was the rear lip. I'm going to do a vis kit for now while I source original trd ones. Im thinking of starting a RU-vid channel to chronicle my path to restoring my MR-S
Any 90's-late 2000 tuner car with a community is getting big amounts of value appreciation, which can be seen as a good thing. Maybe now people will actually try to take care of the limited supply and not wrap them into trees as much lol
BROI PLAYED INITIAL D ARCADE AND I WENT TO THE MANGA AND I GOT HOOKED JUST THE SAME WAY. I OWN MY SECOND ZZW30 AND I HAD A BUNCH IF S13s. JUST THE SAME AS THIS GUY
damn now thinking about it. i was influence like that too than f & f. thats why i always wanted an ek hatchback because of initial D and keiichi tsuchiya tbh.
I got a GTI mk5 that I want to improve even more but I want this one too, cause I like low cars and this is an affordable uncomfortable fun car. (Yes for me uncomfortable is a plus in this world of SUVs and cars taller than 145cm)
You likely have Corky's braces (he came out with a variety with the original, most popular being the breastplate). These were popular on Spyderchat for the quality and value (I had TRD front/rear strut tower bars and front/rearl lower member braces w/ just the Corky's breastplate at the weakest/least reinforced part of the chassis according to owners). I also had the only C-ONE exhaust known in American forums/social media. And the TRD Catalyzer/TRD Headers/TRD Air Inlet (and TRD Roll Bar/TRD Hardtop for aesthetics). Always set off alarms esp. when driving through car garages lol wheelwell.com/evan-bunch/2lyb/2005-toyota-mr2-spyder/6nt7/corky-and-company-chassis-brace-midship-member-brace
@@NeilVegetaDang found it! You made me do little homework but on your channel it's in the Elise vs MR-S video 6:58. I subbed that's awesome love me some lightweight. Obesity kills can't fight gravity unfortunately
