Mine is not broken but shifter lights still won’t turn on. I can only turn it on by bypassing it with a metal clip. Any ideas what I should check next besides the fuses ?
I do know that 1st gen Tundras have an on going problem with drive light the bed light going out. I haven't found out what the fix is! You might check the fuses. Sorry I can't help.
** Dangerous and misleading! ** There is no benefit and considerable unnecessary risk in removing the steering wheel and airbag. Completely unnecessary. For a 2002 Sequoia... * Park level, chock the wheels, remove negative cable from battery. * Remove 4 - 10mm bolts holding the panel below the steering column. Move the panel out of the way. No need to disconnect anything attached to that panel. * Remove three phillips-head screws holding the upper and lower steering column shrouds. One screw is in the center of the lower shroud. For the other two screws, you will need to turn the steering wheel left/right about 20 degrees to access the screws. The screws are at the 3 and 9 o'clock position. With the steering wheel centered, the screws are behind the center bar of the steering wheel. * Apply pressure at seams of lower and upper shroud to help separate them. The boot around the shift lever prevents you from completely removing the upper shroud. No worries, just move it out of the way. * Shift into the lowest gear. Remove shift lever retaining bolt (# 30 Torx bit). This bolt is at the base of the shift lever where it joins shift lever sub-assembly. Disconnect the O/D signal cable. Remove shift lever and upper shroud. * Disconnect shift cable. Use a large flat-head screw driver between the subassembly and the cable and pry the cable off. (A bit surprised there was not a snap ring here? The post the shift cable mounts to is shown around 6:55 in the video.) * Remove three # 30 Torx bolts that mount the subassembly to the steering column. Shift gears as needed to improve access to the bolts. * Reposition the sub-assembly so you can access the brake interlock connection. Remove two # 27 Torx bolts - be careful removing this connector. As you separate this connection, there is long spring within the shift lever subassembly. Note -this connection is referred to as 'this gizmo' around 5:44 in the video. There are alignment marks, but I don't think they are needed, as there is a key-way/slot configuration that would make it impossible to reconnect it the wrong way.) Assembly is the reverse... * Reconnect the brake interlock. Make sure the spring is in place and the key-way lines up. Re-insert the 2 # 27 Torx bolts. * Mount the new shift lever assembly in place with the three # 30 Torx bolts. Be very careful not to over-tighten. Steel bolts into aluminum housing !!! * Re-attach the shift-lever cable by sliding it onto the post until fully seated * Re-attach the O/D selector sensor connection. * Re-attach the shift lever. * Not a bad idea to make sure everything works ok before you... * Put the shrouds and panels back in place. * Be a happy camper driving down the road Hope this helps!
I've said you don't have to remove all the stuff I did. But I could only know that by doing what I did. Dangerous, is a word you use. Living in Chicago is dangerous too. But ppl do it. Good to have comments, even from a Joe S.
Joe, you were right on the money. NO need to take off the steering wheel or the air bag AT ALL. This was a 40 minute job even in the cold and relatively simple and straightforward. The only thing I found that was wrong was the #27 Torx was a #20 on my 2002 Tundra (good since I didn't have a #27). I just cut your instructions out and printed it out to keep track easier. It took me longer to find your comments than to do the job. WAY too much misinformation out there, even on Tundra forums. This is ALL you need.
Joe if it wasn’t for you typing all this out in the comment section I would’ve had one hell of a time watching this guys video I think he might have been on crystal meth or something who the hell takes their airbag and steering wheel off just to access the shifter LOL anyways Joe if it wasn’t for your comment it would’ve been much harder job I appreciate you taking the time to type it all out thanks again
Great video, I'm having the exact problem. I searched your other videos but did not find the part number for the shift assembly. Can you please post the part number? My research says either 33501-OCO11 or -OCO21. Please help, thanks!
I'd like to help but its been awhile since I did this vid & I'm way from home for while. You have to get the prt from Toy. Give them your VIN they'll get you the prt. It all comes in 1 box.
