Just did this job; start-to-finish and cleanup, about 30 minutes. These instructions are perfect. My bushings looked almost identical to yours, especially the discoloration on the bottom one. Made a HUGE difference in how smooth it shifts now. Thank you so much!

I discovered that bushing before the world ever knew what RU-vid was. If you can pick up on the shifter and it works, then the bushing under it is wore out. Great video. I just wish it was around back then. Would have saved me some headaches. But I fixed mine back then same as you did. $12 later and I was back baby! Great feeling to have it work like it's supposed to. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much for this video! I did the job yesterday, at 200k my seal was disintegrated, it was almost impossible to shift. What a difference! The most difficult part was to put metal plate back- I have 4x4, so it's two levers. It is smooth like a butter now! Now off to replace clutch cylinders

Sounds like a couple of people had the same problem I ended up having. Couldn't get the retainer to depress. Then it dawned on me that perhaps the bushing was so far gone that it wasn't holding up the retainer. That ended up being the case. All I needed to do was to turn as the retainer was already down.

Too many times mechanics are mere parts replacement techs opening up transmissions replacing good syncro gears and stumbling upon the bad, easy to get to, affordable bushings (that are the actual problem). The best thing about the internet is the RU-vid.

Five years ago, I bought my base 2wd '96 Tacoma, for $400. It only had 71K on the clock, but would not go into first or third gear. According to the seller, the repair estimate he got was $2400! Based on my experience, and what I read then, and now, online, the first thing to do is definitely check/replace the shifter saddle and bushing. In my case, there were complications. Apparently, plastic chunks from the saddle had jammed the internal shift-linkage. But I was able to force it into both gears. After driving it for several weeks, the resistance gradually disappeared. I suspect this ground up the chunks into tiny pieces, which then fell harmlessly to the bottom of the gearbox. Now there IS a shifter-cover on the gearbox that I could have (maybe should have) unbolted to check the linkage. But I feared that small metal parts might fall inside, and then I'd have to pull the whole gearbox out. Ironically, three years later, I did have to pull the gearbox to R&R the clutch after it started slipping. I figure the previous owner starting out in second gear probably helped kill it. The parts only cost $130. But there's no removable cross-member under my 2WD Tacoma's gearbox. Working on ramps in my driveway, the clutch job took nearly a week! But at least the fluid got changed, along with all that ground up plastic!

I have the same '94 Toy PU, only red. I've had no issues shifting, but when it was up on the rack the other day, it appeared to be gushing gear oil out of the shifter connection. I'm gonna guess my bushing is destroyed or missing as well! Thanks for putting this up, I could not see how to remove the shifter boot, seems the carpet is glued to the floor! I will try again once I get the correct parts. Just turned over 266,000 miles this week! runs great but in need of some TLC, I'd love that new truck ride, but the insurance and registration (in CA) fees are prohibitive! Leaking at the valve cover gasket as well, but these are minor and easy fixes. My steering gearbox is failing though also, and I'm not sure if I can do that job.

When I did the shifter went all the way right! Felt like it was broken. Went to dealer and got it . Stock items. Went home put it on less than 1hr. And wallla! Fixed both shift problems . Unreal. Also I prev had a bracket welds broken on pedal shifter and that’s a mission to fix . See other people videos. But try this fix first too.

I have hard time starting the engine. It starts in the morning, but after engine warms up, stepping on the clutch pedal deep and turn the key on nothing moves. I understand that there's a engine switch at the bottom of the clutch pedal. Unless it's depressed by the pedal(to all the way), it won't start. It's been hard since I bought it(2000 Tacoma) but lately it's becoming even harder. What can be the cause? I will adjust the pedal switch(found it online) and see if it works but if it doesn't, I'll be in big trouble.

Hmmm.... Ford Transit is a different beast than Toyota Pickup. Sounds like there is a lot of miles on the Transit? Maybe the syncros going out.

Got a '07 Toy. Matrix. While in 4th for a minute, stick snapped back to Neutral. Did that a few times that day on highway. Then l tried duplicating that again in 4th with 200 xtra lbs of weight another day..nothing happened. Don't want to force it on high rpm in fourth. Not sure what's up. Just spent 1,300 on wife's other Toy. for tires and frnt. links. Any ideas?

$1,300 OUCH! It relatively easy to check the bushings at the shift lever. Check that first

I have problem only with second gear. I cant eject from second gear at low car speed. When the car speed is high there is no problem. It is manual gearbox. What can be the problem?

Would this still work if you're only having this problem with one gear?
