For any of the early L322 Range Rover owners out there with 2003, 2004, or 2005 Range Rovers that use the early NON-FIBER-OPTIC connections, this video describes the process and what you would need to install the Android-based Eonon head units. I purchased my head unit directly from Eonon's website and got the optional harness that is designed for it as well.
Since the L322 from this generation is basically a BMW E39, anything designed for an E39 pretty much is compatible with the infotainment from this car.
These are the parts I used:
Eonon GA9349 Head Unit
Eonon A0582 harness

i have a 2004 range rover l322 looks like yours...will the new eonon 7 Inch-GA9449 android 10 work on my rover? Also is there a video that you know of on how to actually wire it up from the head unit all the way back to the rear of the vehicle? thanks
@ThomasStudios17
@ThomasStudios17 3 года назад
you should make a video on how to hook up the wires...on the back of the oem stereo i have a blue plug and a white plug..where do they go when you remove them from the oem stereo? and the rear of the vehicle how does that all plug in...no one has it on their videos...

I`m sorry, but...... Where is the "installation" here? It`s just a point-and-do-this-and-this guide, really.

hey bro question did you install the rear cam?? if so where did you put it and where's the reverse circuit wires you connected it too in the back?
@mjrgroup
@mjrgroup 2 года назад
Hi. The previous owner of our Rover drilled out a flush-mount reverse camera into the center of the rear bumper. Apart from the fact that it's silver in color (needs body paint color matching to hide it), it is in a near perfect spot to show the right angle and perspective. We just triggered it off of the reverse light circuit!

I know this is old but did you have any issues with incoming calls having serious static. Especially if you change the colors of the buttons. And a little static when on FM radio?? I gave those issues with mine
@mjrgroup
@mjrgroup 2 года назад
Sorry I just saw this. We don't have any issues with static on calls. Maybe try a facetime audio, skype call and then a normal call to see if there's any perceptible difference? That way you can narrow down whether it's a carrier issue, or bluetooth, etc.

You don't show where the plugs go...I tried to install one of these in my 2005 rr and the plugs didn't fit...all the part numbers you show for head unit and wiring harness I got..please advise..thanks

IIRC, mid-2005 was when Land Rover changed over to the fiber optic wiring platform for some of the interconnects on the multimedia system. You'll want to confirm if yours is running that new fiber system or the older copper only and then order the appropriate cable connectors/adaptors from EONON

Hey, I have a 2012, L322. Was wondering the process on how to upgrade the head unit, I'm thinking of going with a Sony AX5500, however, my local electronic shop is saying they would have to rewire everything and would likely need to have the car in the shop for two days, (at $500/day). Does this seem reasonable to you at all?

Hi Diego. This video applies primarily to the 2003 to 2005 Rovers, as the 2006 and on moved to a fiber optic cable system to transmit the data/audio in between the amps and head unit. Now while that is the case, I believe aftermarket head units can still interface with the factory amps, you would just need the appropriate adapters/converters. Let me tell you one thing, I'm an audiophile, and I've built up a lot of knowledge, gear, and skills working on audio equipment and speakers in my home. The factory speaker and amp systems in Rovers are among the best available in luxury cars. I would never replace all the speakers in my 2004 Rover with aftermarket speakers, because Harmon Kardon tuned this system perfectly for the car. Most people lack the testing equipment and methodology to replicate that perfect tune from the factory. So for me it was very important to retain the Harmon Kardon amps. What it seems your local shop likely wants to do by "rewiring everything" is probably rip out the factory Harmon Kardon speakers and system and redo everything from scratch with their own amps. I would caution against this, because the factory head unit interfaces with other features of the car and you WILL lose those functions. If you have a camera system around your car you will lose that, you may only be able to retain the reverse camera and that's only if the shop knows what they're doing. Another thing I told the other view who posted above. The factory Land Rover RAVE service manual for the L322 details how to remove all the interior trim pieces. We know what we're doing and were careful but still ended up breaking some of the interior trim pieces. We had to buy replacements or use JB weld on certain pieces to clean up after ourselves and to repair damage from previous techs that worked on the car. If you take the care to a shop that does not reference the factory Land Rover RAVE manual, you will almost certainly end up with broken trim pieces that may never fit back right. So whatever shop you use, make sure they're willing to listen to you and reference the factory service manual when doing the work. Also, shops make money by selling you components. You almost certainly don't need new amps and new speakers, but they would default to selling you all of that and "rewiring everything" just to make a profit and sell you equipment you don't need. My advice is find a head unit that the manufacturer has full support of for your car and can sell you the harness and adapters to make it work completely perfectly without extensive rewiring. And finally, I would really consider whether changing out your head unit is worth the hassle and the loss of other functions/features. I.e. your factory clock and date/time may STOP working completely or just randomly reset every so often. Just something to consider. Cheers mate, and thanks for watching, liking, and subscribing.

@@mjrgroup Hey there, thank you so much for your detailed response! I am new to the RR family. To be quite honest, I simply want to "modernize" the interior by adding a head unit that has apple CarPlay while leaving everything else completely OEM, (including speakers and amps). I did explain that to the shop who has very good reviews. So hopefully they aren't trying to sell me on anything because I wouldn't be replacing my speakers. I do wish I could do this on my own but it just seems rather complicated, I wish it was just plug and play with simple adapters/converters. I also explained to the shop that it was important to me to keep all the steering wheel control functionalities working properly and thoroughly. I will definitely be looking into the Land Rover RAVE manual. So, what I think they meant be "rewiring" everything, was that since the amp is the back of the vehicle, they would have to run wires to the front in order to connect and subsequently run my after market head unit. Again, this is an assumption. Thank you again so much for the response and any advice helps!!! It was difficult enough for me to find a dash kit for my particular vehicle, (there was only one that I found from "Metra"). It's incredible that I am unable to find any tutorials or installation videos of replacing a head unit on an L322.

Snake the quad lock harness along the HVAC duct? Going to try again. I try to go up an opening above the gas pedal and it's a bit too small.

QUESTION: When you have an app running, such as RU-vid or Spotify, and then you press the "band" button, does it go automatically to the AM/FM? or if you hit DVD, does it change to the disc regardless if another app is running? Thanks - this would make things simpler for my wife ;-)

If you buy the harnass do you still need to get all the wires from the back to the front? Or dk they fit inside the ones that are alr in dashboard and you just install all cables there?

Also another question, i have a RR 4.2SC 2005 with touch screen in build stereo. Is that compatible with the newest eonon android 10 version?
@mjrgroup
@mjrgroup 2 года назад
So sorry I'm only now seeing this response 1 year later. I believe some of the later model 2005s had the newer fiber optic system. Technically they only official started rolling those out in 2006, but I've heard, but cannot confirm, that some late model 2005s have it as well. You'll want to confirm if your 2005 has the older setup or the newer fiber optic cabling. If it has the fiber, the Eonon may still be compatible but you may need additional adapters, etc and will want to consult a different guide for the 2006+.

How does this all sound compared to the Harmon Kardon?
@mjrgroup
@mjrgroup 4 года назад
So the neat thing about the Eonon, is that it uses the Harmon Kardon amps and so really the Eonon just outputs the stereo signal to the HK equipment, which muliplexes it to the 9 or 11 or however many speakers there are. So the Harmon Kardon "sound" is retained.
@djbibb
@djbibb 4 года назад
Wow, that’s incredible! Thanks for sharing all this. Any idea what an installation might cost?
@mjrgroup
@mjrgroup 4 года назад
@@djbibb My pleasure. I'm sorry but since I'm a DIYer, I can't advise on what a competent shop would or should charge for their time for all this. I can say, and I said it to the other viewer who asked the same below, that you want to take it to a premium shop that consults the service manual for the car before pulling off interior trim pieces. It is so very common to break trim pieces upon removal and then they will never fit right again. They might be loose or rattle and trying to go back to a shop and inform them they they broke it is just a recipe for disaster. My advice, whoever you take it to, make sure they are willing to listen to you, print out all the relevant sections from the Land Rover RAVE service manual on interior trim removal and give it to them to follow step-by-step. If I were doing this myself, and I am not a shop but just an individual car collector, I would probably charge $800 total for the install plus the cost of the radio and parts, because that's what my time is worth. I have some more thoughts I'm typing up for the other viewer so check my reply to his question below too. Also thanks for liking, commenting and subscribing if you're interested in more Rover and other car stuff!

just payed attention to you saying you need to keep navi system in ? i took mines out and no problems at all on mines just to let you know.

You may find that the clock randomly resets itself periodically or have other issues. I would test every feature with and without the nav system to ensure that you retain all the features you want.

mjrgroup Thanks! Any reason why you decided not to use the gps antennae supplies with the radio? Maybe just aesthetics? I imagine it would have to be routed from under the dash pad forward to have clear view of the sky through the windshield. How about the usb dongle for iPhone CarPlay or android auto? Did you use that and if so, where did you have the cord exit the dash for directly plugging in a phone?
@mjrgroup
@mjrgroup 4 года назад
Dutch Zoom Purely for aesthetics. We originally used the included GPS antenna but didn’t like it flopping it around the dashboard. For the USB dongles we have one each exiting the bottom corner of the center panel side trim panels. These are the trim pieces that have the wood edge panels on them.
