I watched this video twice and I am having a disagreement with my dealer. He says my 2007 Honda Accord, LX 4cyl does not have a transmission filter, then I said it's an in-line filter, he said nope!! I said yes it does, both my sons said it does and now watching this I see it does, then my son showed me. I am taking the filter to show the dealers mechanic that there is a filter, here it is and this is where it is at, and I will have my son do the flush, they lost my business. I wanted to get it done professionally because my son's make their mother wait when it comes to my car. They work on everyone first because they pay. Anyway, I never thought my son would be smarter than a dealer mechanic, he is a mechanic and a better one. Now I have to go there and prove them wrong. I even called corporate headquarters to verify this and the only thing different they said was 2 1/2 quarts of fluid. But a dealer saying to me that there is no filter. Well now they are going to get embarrassed by a 60 year old woman that doesn't like someone playing stupid. Thanks for the video, you helped in this argument. My son said, he told me so.

Followed this procedure on a 2008 Civic. It's a small pain to disconnect the line and pump out the old, nasty fluid in the torque converter (if you just remove the drain plug, - all you are doing is replacing half the trans fluid, effectively diluting the old fluid with new by 50%). A bigger pain to disconnect the airbox and related tubing to get to the external inline trans filter, but this is the complete service. Thanks for sharing your experience - and ignore the whiners.

Finally someone else who does flushes on non CVT transmissions same as I do. I've been getting so much grief over the years from "licensed" mechanics screaming the return line is so important because its also lubricating parts. At idle, the left over fluid in the return line is more than enough. Only difference I would suggest is not to run it until the pressure line is spitting out air. I usually count to about 20 or 25 seconds each run so there's still a minor amount of fluid left in the pan. It'll take a little more fluid to flush out properly but at least its not running dry which I think is important in higher mileage transmissions. Then just measure each time after the 25 second run and fill that much back in with fresh fluid. Video was chill, well filmed and explained. Awesome job!

i just followed this technique , the only thing i did different was going in the other hose of the transmission so I can flush the radiator too. Also the filter hoses are easy to remove with the filter still installed. just twist them a bit and they go out easy.

I missed the part where you used that hose you showed in the beginning. I'll rewatch. Still, a very good video. Good job. Update: I did this flush and fill today. Here are the lessons I learned: 1. The 90 degree pliars are indespensible. You will need them on every clamp. The bend helps you reach all three components of the clamp. I bought a huge pair at HF for $4. Why? Because I tried this with a pair of normal pliars and an adjustable one. Neither worked. 2. The underbody plastic must be removed. I tried getting to the first clamp and couldn't get a grip. 3. WD-40 does help with the underbody plastic retainers. 4. The orientation of the filter is determined by the bracket. It has a half-circle slit on the steering wheel side. The filter as a lip that fits into this slit. A very good method that so should be followed very closely. Thank you.

He didn't end up using it with the method he showed in the video. Had enough length on hose on the car. Driver's side line is what he disconnected from base of radiator. Then fed into pan.

the radiator fans only have three bolts & two lil plugs. if you remove the fan its very easy to see the rubber hose & clamps. since you're not driving far doing this flush it wouldn't hurt to start the car for a minute or two without the fans. do the flush & snap the fans back in.

@hodlcro4dlife661
@hodlcro4dlife661 Год назад
@Kimo Clyde Specialist said there areas the particles can build up from Flushing a transmission out cause more problems than just doing an ordinary drain and fill to me I would just do a couple drain and fills and buy a couple more Trans fluid then flush who really knows each automobile is different
@georgediaz34
@georgediaz34 11 месяцев назад
@@kimoclydethere’s a couple layers in a transmission that look like those “maze with the ball” toys you might have played with as a child with tons of passageways. And ATF is a good cleaner on its on, so if you do a complete flush the new fluid will clean the transmissions gunk build up, but that build up might clog the passages causing the transmission to fail prematurely. Your best bet is to drain the transmission and re fill. Remember the transmission clutch plates use fluid pressure to grab the plate to move your car, if there’s no friction it will slip. 110% recommend drain and fill. And repeat process in 10k miles, and after the second flush you can drain and fill every 40k-65k miles. Hope this helps!

@Jez2008UK Месяц назад
I've been overdosing on these tranny videos and there is definitely a school of thought on whether to change or flush. ChrisFix (I think he's called) says to look at the colour of the oil to decide. If it's black and tar like, then don't. In this instance, I don't see what the problem would be, I *think* this myth is more to do with HOW you take the old oil out, and if it's sucked out through the dipstick, then definitely don't do a flush. In this instance, the oil is going in the same direction, and so a flush I'm guessing would be fine/good.

So just did my trans the exact way you did and now I'm dealing with high idle issue only when it's in park, also it wont shift out of park now. I have to use the bypass button on the side of the shifter to go into reverse or drive. Other than that my car is shifting 100% better when driving. I only went for a little drive to test it. Before I did that I made sure to shift through the gears. You have any idea what's going on? I did some research and only thing I can think of is I added too much fluid but it is at the 2nd dot. Some people say it might be my idle control valve and that I should clean it out. I'd appreciate any help whatsoever. Appreciate it!
@macthemec
@macthemec 4 года назад
So how does it shift? No complaints about your procedure, i do the exact same thing, but i do prefer to have the old ATF to drain into a pan after the transmission heat exchanger so that i know i got all the old fluid out of both the trans/torque converter/heat exchanger. Not a big deal if you do regular maintenance though which it looks like you do

This method can flushed the ATF faster but it is a lot more work and possibly causes more problems if you don't put the ATF line back properly. BYW, Honda recommends to change ATF on the 7th Gen Accord automatic at 120K miles or 6 years for the first time and 90K miles or 5 years after the first time. You can change it sooner but it may not be necessary unless your ATF fluid is very dark like this car. You can just drain and fill twice each time your do an ATF change, that is more than enough to get most of the old fluid replaced, and that's about 6 Qts. Doing this way, he skipped opening the drain plug but he did not get to clean that dirty plug to get rid of the metal shaving collected on that plug at the bottom of the AT oil pan. BTW, he does not wear any eye protection while he is under the car and he does not use a low profile mechanic creeper, which is much easier to get under the car. Last but not least, he should use a plastic clip remover rather than the flat head screw driver, it would save him from buying new clips.
@whatitisnt.
@whatitisnt. 3 месяца назад
I could swear I remember reading this comment and believing it last December. But it's absolutely fucking false. True story I read this comment and thought it was the correct recommendation. I should've been changed the ATF fluid. Honda recommends every 30,000 miles after the first ATF change. Instead I listened to this advice. While the car was taking several seconds to shift from park to reverse, and thought it was normal since your comment states every 90,000 miles. Now I know it definitely wasn't normal and the shifting got a little worse afterwards but after the ATF change I did last week it got much better.

When I went to UTI for automobile, Diesel Truck and Industrial Technology in 1998 -2000 for my AAS degree, one of the very first things they taught us is to throw out the WD40 in the trash and NEVER use it again. It was developed for de-icing aircraft wings. When the bottom fell out in the WD40 business, WD40 was in big trouble. The company had millions of gallons of the stuff in warehouses. After brainstorming they decided to market it to the home mechanic "Joe" with the idea it would fix almost every problem. After all, there is a sucker born every minute, right? WD40 HARMS many systems in automotive work. It is not even an oil. It destroys rubber! Another thing I noticed was something that really hit home because I had a friend that was working under the car without protective googles on. Unfortunately, he ended partially blinded when the brake fluid splashed into his eyes. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen severe "accidents" while working on cars. Much of that could have been prevented by using common sense. I observed one guy that was too cheap to buy jack stands. Instead, he used cinder blocks to prop up the car. and got under the car work on it. The next day he found the cinder blocks disintegrated and the car sitting on the brake drums. Fortunately, he was not killed. I won't even get into working on a car A/C system and the serious dangers of that. Maybe what I have written here will save someone's life. Hey guys, the Honda V6 does have a transmission filter. It's located on top of the transmission below the battery case. It's a pain though to change especially if you haven't done it before but well worth it. I changed mine and it looks dirty and grayish from the metal shavings. Most people including most Honda technicians and Honda customer support don't know it even exists because Honda doesn't say anything about it in their service manual, I wonder why. Honda said it supposed to last for the life of the transmission, really? I don't believe that BS. Honda should at least recommend it changed at 60k or 105k at the most.

Thanks for the video. Question: So the trans doesn't have a drain plug? Or are you choosing to do it this way?
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 8 лет назад
the trans does have a drain plug, we did a drain and refill video before, but doing this way will remove fluids from your entire transmission system, including the torque converter.

Thank you, great to know.
@petegangies

so would you first drain from the trans drain plug, and then put it back in and remove the cooler line and pump the rest out? I see an advantage of draining from the plug first to remove any contaminants in the box and then removing the cooler line to remove the rest from the torque converter. Or should you drain from drain plug, refill, then drain from cooler line and then refill again?
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 7 лет назад
Peter Hatzidimitriou you can drain it from the drain plug and remove any metal debris from the magnetic drain plug, then plug it back in, refill with 4 quarts and flush it from the line the remaining fluids in the torque converter, and refill back up the rest. Make sure to use all your fluids so it'll get rid of all the old fluids out. We usually use 12 quarts.

ok great thanks for the speedy response!...if I decided to do the 3 x 3 method instead...would you change the trans filter after the first drain or after the 3rd and final fill?

Thank you for making such a useful and informative DIY video. I'm new at this but very handy and already did my motor mounts and valve cover gasket. Honda's prices can light a fire under your butt to DIY. But my question is, can I do both the hose and drain plug method to ensure its all out? And if so, which one do I do first? I plan on doing this tomorrow morning (Sunday 3rd) So if you don't respond in time its cool. i'm just trying my luck here. Thank you and what you're doing here on your channel is truly helpful and some, if not the best DIY clips on RU-vid. Crisp video positioning, video quality and crisp audio. Keep doing what your doing here. Much Props!

+NYCMP1 Thanks! as for the method. I would do the hose method like in this video since it's draining out all of the fluids in the transmission system. If you do both method at the same time, it might not be pushing all of the dirty fluids out since when you're refilling it with fresh fluid, it'll get drain out of the transmission pan instead of getting sucked back up into the system and pushing the old fluids out. I hope that helps explain the method. If not, let me know.

+NutzAboutBolts Thanks for the prompt response. Very much appreciated. Yeah that makes sense but how about the metal shavings on the plug. That's what I wanted to also get at, the metal deposits on the magnet. Wiping the plug clean. Is there a way or am I OCD'ing here lol.
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 8 лет назад
+NYCMP1 thats true, you can remove the plug after the fluids start to sputter on the hose and the engine is off. Then wipe away the drain plug and all the metal shavings and then plug it up and resume the process.

The filter they changed is an inline filter, meaning its an additional filter to the one inside the transmission, Honda says you never need to service either one but doesn't hurt to change the one they changed.

For a lot of other AT cars, you're correct. But Honda manual says, " bring it to operating temp(85C or 185F), park on level surface, put the gear in park. Shut off engine and check the ATF level within 90 seconds".

Since you only had to add 3 qts I'm assuming this only removed the fluid from the pan. If this is the case, why not just remove the drain plug? Not sure what I'm missing. What's the benefit here?
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 6 лет назад
Ron Burton we didn’t just add 3 quarts to the transmission. We did an entire flush. We saved the last 4 bottles to refill the transmission. We added 3 quarts first and used the last bottle to top off the fluids. You can do the flush with 12 quarts, but we had only 9 quarts to use so it still works. If you want to do a drain and refill. You can remove the drain bolt on the bottom and then refill it on the top dipstick tube.

rpm doesn't bounce around. reversing from drive way is okay putting the car on drive vibrates alot. very minimal before cleaning throttle body. I changed all motor mount but that's the first thing I check w/o removing it again I loosen all mount let the car settle and torque. but that doesn't explain no power. TY
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 8 лет назад
whats the idle rpm? it should be 790 +/- 50 rpm in park or neutral. if its manual, it will be 750 +/- 50 while in neutral. I'm not sure if its your engine mount or could be the throttle body since you removed it and cause the ECM to relearn the engine idle. When you did the idle learn procedure, did you hold the rpm at 3k and wait until the radiator fan comes on? then let it idle for 5 minutes?

Julio Navarro CHANGE IT brother. change it. Don’t do a full flush, just a drain a refill. bad trans fluid like you are describing WILL mess up your transmission. Change it and keep an eye on it. as soo as it starts turning gray, drain and fill it again.
@Jez2008UK
@Jez2008UK Месяц назад
Going from memory, when you do a trans oil change it's around 2.9litres, but when you do a flush, getting ALL the oil out, it's about double that, around 6 or so litres? I only saw you put 3 quarts in there? Or did I miss something?
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts Месяц назад
In total was about 4 quarts I think… but put in 3 quarts first so you don’t over fill it. There was still fluids in the torque converter so that’s why it didn’t take the whole 6 quarts since it’s not entirely empty.

I have 2007 Hoda Accord. if I start the car in the morning and I engage the transmission it will delay for some seconds before it will engage. Secondly, if the transmission is engaged and the car starts moving, the transmission between gear 1 and 2 engages forcefully with a sound that will shake the car. Thereafter the transmission will become smooth when the engine becomes hot. if the car is parked for up to six hours, same problem will start again. What do do you advice?

Great video, I'm just wondering if the ATF radiator flush was necessary since you're doing three drains and fills (consecutively after a drive cycle) because the drive cycle would pump old fluid back into the radiator that was just drained and re-filled thus rendering that specific flush useless. Is my logic wrong? Keep up the good work man, the video was too-notch.
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 9 лет назад
3rick512 the drain and refill isn't reliable as this flush because old fluids aren't introduced back to the system compared to the drain and refill from the pan. When you flush the system, old fluids inside the system drain out entirely and never get reintroduced back with the new fluids like the drain and refill. I would do the flush only if I haven't changed my fluids for along long time. But a drain and refill every 60k should be sufficient though. I hope that helps?
@3rick512
@3rick512 9 лет назад
Thanks for the reply, it does seem like the method you did in the video would get the most impurities and pollutants out of the fluid. Im just a little confused as to why Honda recommends the drain and refill method over a clean flush. I need to do more research on this. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

you missed the most important thing, removing the drain plug in order to clean the residues out of the magnet part of the plug. when you do that the magnet is clear and ready to collect more residues. I don't go that far, This kind of engine needs no more than drain and refill three time in each session. Believe me, I have 340K on mine and all I did is just drain, clean the plug and refill.
@4seeableTV
@4seeableTV 5 лет назад
Consecutive sessions on one day or spread out over months?
@bigmikeh
@bigmikeh 5 лет назад
@@4seeableTV Do the entire process in one shot, or the old fluid mixes in with new fluid which is kind of a waste. The setup takes the most time so doing it all at once means you only have to set up for the job one time. You'll do 3 or 4 drain/refill cycles, which take less than 5 minutes each, while setting up and reassembly at the end can take 15 minutes if some darn hose decides it wants to stay stuck. Really it's not a difficult process, do it right and you're $$$ ahead!
