I remember reading the Kansas City Star all the time back in the day and Jason Whitlock predicted Kansas State winning the national championship in 2003 over the Miami Hurricanes. After being at this game with my brother and some close friends, I can say that KSU was one of the top 5 teams in the country for sure
I'm not a USC fan by any means but how the hell did did Oklahoma get in to the championship game over them lol, they got blown out in the only game that mattered. The BCS was weird times.

A lot of people don’t understand coaching. I don’t think people understand how good it was for LSU and Nick Saban for Oklahoma to have to play Kansas State once again in the big 12 championship because they could look at what Kansas State did to fix their issues after the first game if, Kansas State did not make it to the conference championship. I’m pretty sure Oklahoma would have beat anybody pretty bad in the conference championship and they would have the LSU probably by at least two touchdowns but Nick Saban and his coaches were able to watch the first game, and then see the adjustmentsfor the championship game. So they implemented that into their game. I think Kansas State was actually better than LSU.

@@jasonrogers6454 However, I'm going to agree with him. Nobody saw Brown running up the middle all night for more than 60 points against Nebraska. That was the first time in history that Nebraska looked anything like a non-conference patsy up the middle. The complete inverse of the mystique and dominance of the once legitimately vaunted black shirt defense. They were undefeated going into that to the point and they played for the national title against Miami. Well, they got blasted 55-0 or something like that against one of the legit best teams of all time (not to wear that out of course, but go look at that Miami team along with 95 Nebraska). But on that night, they were undefeated and had not lost their aura of dominance yet. They weren't as much of a juggernaut but that N on the side of the helmet loomed large still. People either forget or are too young to know. That N was intimidating. It was surreal following that game where the defense was seemingly a soft center. Colorado stole the mystique that night. NU was still competitive to a degree for some years but no longer feared. It was the beginning of the end, and then worse after they fired a 9-3 coach. With league changes, recruiting changes, parity, etc...it seems like a potential longshot they ever regain prominence. It could happen, but they aren't situated in a spot like Bama or Texas or Florida where you are going to be appealing to area talent. They are slightly closer to Wyoming now. Getting to a high level in FBS is going to be a tough climb whereas they used to draw the best from all over under Osborne. The beginning of what you see today is that night at CU.

James Terry stepped up huge for K-State. Incredible wide receiver who had almost 1,400 receiving yards on the year in an attack that focused mainly on running the football. K-State had the best offense OU had seen all season
One of the most shocking outcomes of all time in college football. Except for a 20-13 win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Oklahoma steamrolled everyone in the regular season. They beat Texas 65-13, Texas A&M 77-0, Oklahoma State 52-9. They were playing their best football headed into this game and just got drilled. I've never been more shocked by an outcome of a game. Kansas State was playing good football going into this game. I could have seen a 31-28 "upset." But I never would have guessed a 35-7 domination of that Oklahoma team.
K-State was preseason #5 in the nation so I’m surprised that people didn’t think that they would be in this game. Having the best dual threat quarterback in Roberson from the Big XII along with Sproles, a plethora of receiving options, and a really good offensive line helped K-State play to their potential. KSU should have been in the national championship in 2003 with all the talent that they had. If Roberson wouldn’t have gotten hurt they probably would have been there
Their first loss against Marshall, Roberson didn’t play. He got injured against one of the non-conference opponents. Marshall had a good team in 2003, had two future NFL wide receivers on their offense in Watts and Davis. The next game against Texas in Austin K-State battled back against the Longhorns in a thriller but came up just a little short when Vince Young hit Tony Jeffrey down the sideline on a remarkable pass play in the fourth quarter. Young scores on fourth and goal from the one shortly after that. The third loss was another barn burner against Oklahoma State in Stillwater. That was a back and forth game. The fourth loss was against Ohio State in the bowl game and that Buckeyes team was littered with NFL players everywhere on their roster
Oklahoma should have been a BCS At Large. I would have had them in the Orange Bowl. K-State? Instead of the Fiesta, I’d have had them play Michigan in the Rose Bowl
@@dionsanchez2775 not really. Oklahoma lost the very last game they played before bowl season, it was also a CC game and they lost decisively by 28. Clemson lost early enough to win out its remaining slate, but Oklahoma making it to the title game was indeed inexplicable.
During the Bob Stoops era, outside of 2000 when they won the national championship, they’ve had some of the most talented teams in the history of college football, but yet in the biggest games or even against an opponent they should’ve beaten by at least 3 touchdowns, they would always seem to lay an egg and lose inexplicably.
