Today my friend lets me test drive and review the 2003 Infiniti QX4 which we know is an R50 Pathfinder in disguise, and I try to look into what this live rear axle 3.5L V6 stands for in 2021!
I hope you enjoy this video, feel free to subscribe like or comment!

Very nice review! Great hidden gems on the used market. Far more refined than anyone gives them credit for. Old Man Emu suspension and Bilsteins will fix that ride... Small note though- R50s are all unibody.

One of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned. I live about 40 minutes from town and use mine as a commuter to go back and forth. It’s been the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. Did a ton of research for reliable commuters and decided on this. I got mine with 80K original miles from a dealer. Looked for weeks and overpaid but it was cherry and worth it. Taken it across the country twice now and put about 60K miles on it. Alternator went out at 100K and a small sensor at 120K (i forgot which one). Couple hundred bucks. That’s it. If you buy one of these, double check that the strut mount is not rusted out, that the power valve screws under the intake have been secured, and that the takata airbags have been replaced by the dealer (it’s free under recall. Take it in and they’ll do it for you.).

My 2000 QX4 white/gold with 266,000 miles on it is still driving like a new vehicle. Recently replaced wheel bearings, radiator but well worth the investment in new parts. In the parking lot next to newer SUVs she still holds her on. NOT FOR SALE!

Hell yeah! My 2002 is running strong at 223k miles. She’s only broken down on me once and that was because the OEM alternator finally gave out. Other than preventative maintenance like filters, fluids, and replacement of suspension parts as needed, she’s been doing sternly reliable. My goal is to get 500k out of the engine. Tranny still shifts smoother than a baby’s butt. Fingers crossed!

The qx4's front end styling reminds me a lot of the 06ish range rovers. When I bought my 02, i found that VQ equipped qx4's cost the same, if not cheaper, than equally equipped and condition pathfinders, I think in some ways because no one really knows about the qx4, and since it's just a pathfinder at the end of the day, it also doesn't pull any crazy money vs a pathfinder. Also, it probably helps that the base model qx4 is on the level of a fully equipped pathfinder, which tends to sell more because it's "higher specd" vs a base model pathfinder.
@DRTMaverick
@DRTMaverick 3 года назад
Also, the R50 pathfinder/q4x is unibody, and it's not based on any pickup truck at the time. Nissan did not release and has not released a unibody pickup truck.

i have the exact same vehicle and I am not sure which one you have but mine rides amazing , has enough get up and go, extremely smooth and quiet with no wind noise, and the ride is solid over bumps, I like the Infiniti touches and the cargo space and visibility. The gas mileage is nowhere near a Prius but hey no vehicle is perfect. Frankly one of he best all round SUVs out there especially what I paid for mine.

@200degrees
@200degrees 3 года назад
Thanks! I've got a build video coming out in the next week or two as well as a couple reviews lined up! And yea, my friend who owns that QX4 went to the parts store, was told the Pathfinder rear shocks would not fit and that they were completely different parts, bought them anyway and they bolted right in. Tightened up the ride a lot!
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 года назад
@@200degrees You piqued my curiosity. My suspicion is that your friend had old, worn-out shocks on his qx4 before buying the "pathfinder" variant. A parts search on Rockauto for a 2002 QX4 and 2002 Pathfinder yields the same list of shocks as standard replacements. Pathifnder: www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/nissan,2002,pathfinder,3.5l+v6,1431960,suspension,shock+absorber,7556 QX4: www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/infiniti,2002,qx4,3.5l+v6,1431959,suspension,shock+absorber,7556 That's not a wholly conclusive comparison, but for any R50/QX4 not on 20 year old OEM equipment, they should probably ride identically. Since the qx4 and pathfinder were basically the same weight, I think it would also be wise to assume that they came with the same suspension. I think they were trying to make both models ride as well as possible. Although the OEM suspension definitely wears out pretty quickly, and some "oem replacement" hardware is junk.
@200degrees
@200degrees 3 года назад
@@208Tyler Haha certainly don't think the ones in his were tip-top quality after some 17 years of use. I was reading a few reviews from 2001-2003 that were all referencing the soft rear suspension bottoming out, as we had noticed with his so I was under the impression that it was unique to the QX4, and then with our local parts store (Lordco) saying they were for sure different shocks I based my statements. But Lordco isn't always the best source of knowledge haha It could be that Rockauto made the connection that they both bolt the same way! But I don't want to say I'm 100% correct, I have definitely made mistakes before lol
@200degrees
@200degrees 3 года назад
@@208Tyler *I'll concede though, I just checked out your channel and would say you've done a lot more research on R50's than I managed to do on these, so I'll admit it's likely I was incorrect about that statement. Good videos by the way man! You're a world of knowledge for the R50 community!

I owned an R50 for four or five years and while it was a great introductory 4x4, it definitely has its limitations being a unibody with its front macpherson struts and wheel travel. I upgraded to an N50 (2nd gen xterra) body on frame SUV with 35" tires, a rear locking diff, titanswapped it and cycle 10" of wheel travel upfront. Now the R50 makes a great introductory SUV for off-roading, that's kind of where it ends. I mean if you're willing to dump the cash into a SAS on it they can become quite capable, but that's any IFS you SAS, however keep in mind it's still unibody so don't get in a wreck with it....

Every 5 link solid axle deals with this. 4runners, monteros, troopers alike. It’s a inherent design flaw of a 5 link setup and poly bushings fix this, hence why there is a aftermarket. It’s also a problem for front solid axle.

If you don’t plan on doing any rock crawling and just wanna do light to medium off-roading and overlanding (which is what most people want) then a 2k-3k pathfinder and another 2k in suspension and tire upgrades will get you out on the trails... but if you went 3rd gen 4runner, you’d spend over 5k just to buy the rig with worn out suspensions and high mileage. The pathfinder is looking like a good value more often these day...
