Corvettes are like Ivan Drago, over engineered, over refined, chiseled features, and expected to be the pinnacle of sports cars. The Viper is like Rocky Balboa. Raw, tough as nails, trains by punching sides of beef and lifting oxen yokes, and not nearly as glamorous, but the better of the two. Even the manufacturers, GM is like the Soviet Government, corrupt, all about power and dominance, and Dodge is like Mickey, old school, gritty, and unorthodox.
I’ve owned two Vipers - a gen 1 RT/10 and a gen 2 GTS. The stock catalytic converters get so hot and they’re right by your feet. On my gen 1, I eliminated the cats. On the Gen 2, I switched to high flow cats and relocated them. This was the best thing I ever did as it significantly reduced the heat in the cabin in both cases.
Disagree, have a stock gen 2 rt/10. Love feeling the cats heat up whenever I mash the gas. It is inefficient, but you feel how much gas you are wasting.
@@lawrencebmarshall I respect that. The only other concern is the paint tends to bubble and/or brown on those rockers with the stock cats. On my gen 1, it bubbled really bad.
What if one of those who want one strikes it rich through no fault of their own? Do they just instantly stop being annoying? Should we be giving Vipers to assholes in the world to mellow them out?
Oh man, my first job was working front desk at am embassy suites. A local guy (not a guest, just someone who was in the town) had one of these and used to swing by the hotel every once in a while to show off. I asked him to see it, and he took me around the block for a spin. Was talking to me about the car and all that then I had to go back into work. About a minute after going back in, I see his wife outside chewing him out, asking what he was doing out and why he's giving random people rides and just completely screaming at him haha. Good times
@@TheRealColBosch weird that you think everyone is a bad driver like you. The Viper isn't made for femboys that are used to tiny displacement buzz bombs. Its meant for talented drivers.
The Vipers always felt like cars specifically made for video games which checks out considering how many games they appeared in and it's probably where many found out about the Viper. Seems like as racing games evolved so did the Viper, like every generation represents a specific era in gaming.
the viper is just an american bugatti, its not practical and sucks on a track but its there to display how much power you can push in an engine and drag fast
There’s no car I love more than a Viper, I grew up loving the Viper, it’s probably THE car that made me a car guy. Like you said, if you like it, you love it.
It’s not just the heat, it’s how low you sit in the car. There’s no airflow at all even with the top down. Driving a Viper is entertaining for the first 25 minutes, then you’re tired and hot.
As a gen 3 viper owner (spicy miata) I am honored these are getting the love they truly deserve now. If RCR made a review on it. Definitely doing something right 🤣
Gen 3's have gotten a little extra love. But they're still and always will be the redheaded stepchild. A one-off design catastrophe that Dodge did off the backend of a 6 month adderal and mescaline fueled binge that they course corrected on with the Gen 4+ after getting sober lol
I agree with that statement, I had a miata and flooring it (automatic sadly) was fun but it took forwever to get to speed and i never felt like i'd lose traction, whereas i hear vipers will just scream "What is traction!?"
The 1st-gen Viper could quite possibly be the most gorgeous non-hypercar ever made. The 3rd gen's cute and all, but there's something about the way the first Viper looks like an actual viper. Will I ever own one of these things? God, I hope not. I'm a child of the 80s and my first cars were a 1989 Chrysler New Yorker and a 1991 Plymouth Grand Voyager. I know, right? It's a miracle I'm still alive. The gen-1 Viper (particularly the blue GTS with white hugger stripes) will remain the poster-girl of my dreams. And just like Giselle or any of the Victoria's Secret models, I'm certain the reality has no hopes of living up to the dream. Yet another fantastic video.
The Viper is like a tourist town for me. I'd love to experience it briefly by visiting, but all the bs that comes with owning one is something I don't envy.
Being gone for two months, I just love watching these vids and seeing Mr. Regular cruise around my home area. He even goes past my church at 4:45. Always loved these cars, they just tickle that danger nugget in my caveman brain. Unga Bunga segment had me in tears, especially hoagie fest lol, just PA things
That's me with single-player AI in some cases. Like if *I* pulled speedhacks or whatever in an online multiplayer server, I'd be rightfully banned for that, but the single-player AI can spam them as much as it wants seemingly?
The viper is just a raw go fast machine and that's pretty cool. It also looks pretty darn good. Corvettes have been too fancy for their own good for years. Plus there are tons of them around. Vipers are a different breed.
this is definitely one of the best reviews you've done. i love how you can create the *feeling* the car instills in you, and so clearly express the societal niche it fills, all in the same sentence. this channel rules
As someone that had a poster and a 1:18 model car of the 2nd gen viper as a kid, I'm definitely in the "If you like it, you love it" camp. It is one of those cars that people definitely take notice when it shows up.
Everyone that had a Lamborghini Countach poster on their wall, eventually had a first gen Viper poster either replacing it or tacked up next to it. No frames, you push pined that bastard into the drywall.
6:33 that’s how I feel driving around in my 88 RX seven. It’s the only car I have, and everyone is constantly trying to mess with me and I’m like I’m just trying to get some fried chicken or a burger or something. 😅
I used to own an '89 IROC with a warmed-over 350 and a cam and every punter from Pittsburgh to Punxsutawney wanted a piece of me. It really got tiring after a while. I'm not gonna race you man. I got nothing to prove to you. I know what I have and I know what you have. Also I would like to say, to any guy out there who thinks buying a cool car is going to get you women: No. Get that thought out of your stupid head right the fuck now. A cool car will not get you a woman. I've owned a few cool cars, and I can count on no hands the number of women who have told me "Wow that's a cool car, I want to sleep with you". I have however LOST COUNT of the number of dudes that have come up to me at gas stations or parking lots or wherever saying "Wow that's a cool car, I always wanted one/used to have one/buddy had one in high school/etc". Cars aren't chick magnets. They're Chuck magnets. Buy the cool car because you like it and you want it. Not because you think it'll get you laid.
Try driving a 08 cobra mustang every burger King employee with a auto zoned v6 dodge challenger wants to follow me to the gas station endlessly reving there heat sheald rattling rasp box only to tell me there whole life story while I try and pump my gas. Owning this car is painful enough at the gas station with out having to hear about "your wife's uncles best friends 68 gt 500 that's only got 0 miles on it and how you get it when he dies." I really fight the urge to feel superior to the Wal-Mart mountain dew people but they make it so easy.
On the rare occasion I drive my track prepped SW20 on the street I get this. I'm a magnet for every single Golf R/AMG/Mwhatever It's funny because I pretty much always pull away incredibly slowly due to the finicky twin plate clutch. I never launch the car either, as sticky tyres and hard launches is a great way to kill your driveshafts.
This car was a symbol of what a brand can do like a super high lever halo car, but not what they want to make the market on, on the other hand man did it work because I still want one years later
"Side pipe exhaust that looks like the gaping mouth of an old man forced to perceive primary colors in the month of June" has me fucking rolling at 9AM.
Don't forget that this gen actually broke the Nurburg speed record for production cars... on stock tires.... A record that stood for years, and I believe he's still one of the only cars to break the record with factory equipped tires.
As someone who drives a 2001 dodge ram rcsb with a 5spd and a 318 who revved all (and im being generous here) 300 hp and maybe 320 lbft in a 5k lb truck, at a 2nd gen viper on my commute home, and then was giddy when the viper driver waved and zoomed away, I loved this video lol
Also the Viper in Europe : Wins everything Europe : ok your car needs to be fair so we have to make your car heavier. Viper : Keeps winning. Europe : Ok we need to limit your power for we reduced the amount of displacement. Viper : Fills in 2 cylinders and still keeps winning. Europe : Bruh stahp.
The lesson is, if the Americans wake up one morning and decide they're going to beat you at something, it's a question of "when", not "if". Yes, I'm aware the Oreca Vipers were something of a team effort.
“The only thing he has had to eat today is a handle of makers mark and a plate of cold pizza cheese” lolololol 😂 I spit out my pizza and old fashion hearing that!!!!
So good. One of my two all-time dream cars is a 1997 Dodge Viper GTS. THat's what got me into cars and it still looks better than any other Viper except maybe the RT/10 to me.
I cant tell you, just how accurate the bit about unga bunga level intelligence driving next to a viper. Had that happen too many times, and it's always a Hyundai Genesis or Chrysler 200
Dark but actually happened, there was a kid that used to come to car meets in SWFL in his dad's Viper. He ended up killing his own father, not sure of the motive but the whole bit about inheriting a Viper kinda made me think.
I had two friends die in one. He lost traction coming over a bridge here in SEFL crashed and both of them passed away. They are one of the most dangerous to drive and require discipline to operate
As a gen V owner it’s so true about other drivers. Anyone who’s into cars will lose it when they see your viper. Will try and race, tailgate, follow, take pictures etc. for the first week of ownership it felt good..after that I find myself only driving it with friends on a cruise.
Justin Bell and Tanner Foust have both said pushing production Vipers is scary, so much torque and not enough chassis. The race cars are entirely different cars so they aren't comparable. Obviously the ACRs sorted alot of the issues out mainly add as much down force as possible and pray
This is so accurate. I own a 2000 ACR and the few times I get it out to enjoy the drive it’s usually ruined by a random guy in unga bunga mode. Usually a Mustang. Corvette drivers don’t bother me, they actually try to avoid eye contact.
The funniest thing about these other than the cliche that they are trying to kill you, I love that you can see where the exhausts are burning the paint from the backside of the panels haha.... That shit makes me laugh so much
The viper videos are always full of my favorite one liners. "built to shorten your lifespan." Made me hard. The "its for you" portion of the video is also amazing and "feeling the whole engine through my big toe" is so relatable. Happy to know I'm not the only one that does that lol.
Dodge Viper designed by the guy who gave us the 427 Cobra. Kinda why they are so alike. It's funny back in the day the same complaints were very similar about the Cobra when they were brand new. However, the 427 dual quad Ford never Chugged lol
Pretty much. My friend has a new mid engine Vette. Yeah it's really fast and everything, but seriously anytime we go cruising in it, most of the interest comes from the 60+ crowd. For roughly the same money, I'd gray market import an R34 Skyline, or late gen Supra or RX-7 that was only sold in Japan, because nobody else would have one. Corvettes are everywhere. Vipers are actually pretty rare.
Some innocent soul is going to stumble across this channel oneday completely oblivious, and is gonna get hit like a cruise missle to the face with "dirt-devil by smegma".
I would love to see you guys do every gen of the viper because i feel like the viper is one of those vehicles that doesn’t evolve in its nature but drives, feels, and is a completely different car every generation
As the owner of an 06 coupe, just about every word is absolutely spot on. Just today a Ram felt the need to try to do a pull on me while I was cruising in the right lane. In general it seems Mustangs aren't capable of passing without putting on a show. Just chill guys. And when people want a burnout... nah, these tires are $700 each. I'm not turning all the grip I paid for into smoke.
And no, we aren't racing your 350z either. I don't care how "mean" it sounds with it's turbo and titanium fart rod sticking a foot out your backside. 😂
You're not wrong. Every car show I go to I just watch how long it takes before the owner starts to get annoyed with people telling their life stories or how "I'm a 90s kid and I used this all the time in Gran Turismo 1."
You won me back with this review. I had unsubscribed more than a year ago, but my son forwarded this to me. As a Gen 1 Viper owner I very much appreciated this. Thanks for the laughs!
I owned a Miata for a while and the pedal box felt narrow compared to my 370z. I ended up buying a pair of Piloti shoes that ended up working a lot better since they're pretty narrow.
The Vette may be a better car. But the Viper is far far more fun, and sometimes in life, it’s nice to be back in the shoes of your more childish self, doing or owning something not because it’s it’s a more logical approach, but because it’s more fun
