Complete tour of our 2004 Jeep Liberty Mini Overlander camping vehicle. This jeep is fully outfitted with a 20 cubic Liter Alpicool refrigerator, a 100-watt solar panel, kitchen and cooking stove.
Rims and Tires
235/70/16 with 16x8 rims +0mm offset
The hardtop rooftop tent measures 7ft. x 5ft. x 5ft. and is equipped with an interior light, fan and 2 port USB charging port for all portable USB powered devices.
Its shell exterior is built from a hard plastic fiberglass mixture and is secured with an aluminum frame.
There is an 8ft. long manual awning attached to the side with an additional screened in room attachment.

The Liberty is super underrated in the off road world. They are relatively easy to upgrade, and have the same transfer case and rear differential setup that the old XJ Cherokee had. I've had two and they have been solid off road and on.

Well mine was purchased used from a dealer in NJ so it was exposed to the harsh elements of the north east

I ended up replacing the radiator, starter, and suspension components but those are common to many vehicles with high mileage (172k). Other than that I change the oil consistently every 3k and it drives strong.

I have a Jeep Liberty 2007 with a RTT and I am going to steal a few ideas from you regarding the Shelving at the back. 116000 mi. She hasn't failed me yet, still going strong. I purchased it about 5 years ago at auction. Had 95000 mi. Was in pretty good shape. Put about $2,500 into it. Trans started to slip from 3rd to 4th about a year ago 115000 mi. Now I don't even notice it slipping at all? Seems to of fixed itself for now? Changed the fluid when I bought it at 95000 mi. Fluid was clean not burnt. Maybe a solenoid got stuck then freed up on its own? Front differential is leaking guess I'll dive into that job before winter. Just did valve covers they were leaking. I have vise grips holding both rear Windows up lol better than tape

Thanks for this cool video which inspires me to turn my 04 Liberty Renegade to a camping vehicle. Could you post the links for the awning and the inflatable mattress (back seat)? Also, did you do any reinforcement on the roof/roof rails as the stock roof rack is rated for 150 lbs?

Hey thanks! I didn't do any modifications to the roof. I just bought some crossbars and attached the tent and that was it. It's held up great and I've been very happy with it. Do have a question about the tent and awning Did you have to get cross bars to link the 2 factory bars (running the leth of the jeep) to mount the tent? Did you have to get sepcial brackets to push the awnimg away from the tent?

Thanks! Lol...yes the toilet is a must with my two ladies. I just carry a folding camp toilet with the disposable bags that attach. I use a collapsing privacy tent for the bathroom enclosure. It fits nicely in the back area and keeps the ladies happy. Thanks for watching😄

Thanks! The tires are 235/70/16 All Terrains and rims 16x8 0 offset. They did rub so I beat the wheel well seems with a hammer and trimmed the plastic back and it was a perfect fit.

I just strapped it down to the back. There were some D-rings attached to the floor. It fits snug and it’s own weight keeps it from moving while driving .

Nice rig. I like the way everything is set up but I do have a question about the awning. Do you have any problems when it is set up with it collecting rain ?

Thanks! I had everything setup while visiting the Outer Banks NC and a storm blew in 25 mph winds and heavy rain and it held up great. You can pitch the angle by adjusting the legs so no water will pool up on it. The only real challenge is trying to set it up while the wind is blowing. It’s a great awning though.

Thanks, I’ve been debating buying a liberty and setting it up fo overlanding. As I have gotten older traditional camping has become more work than I am capable of plus I need something kind of economical. Not many people show a complete setup with the rooftop on the liberty.

Thanks! I don’t have a lift kit on it currently. The tires are 235/70R16 Crosswind A/T and rims are 16x8 bolt 5x4.5 with +0mm off set.

I've kind of warmed up to the liberty since I've seen what fiat has done to jeeps, I see the rear seats fold but do they completely lay flat to expand the cargo space?

Yeah I the Liberty’s are nice but the back seats unfortunately don’t lay completely flat. I considered constructive some type of bed back there but since the seats didn’t vome down all the way I just scraped the idea.

What’s the lug pattern ? What rims are recommended and tires?

So the lug pattern is 5x4.5” on 16x8 rims and +0mm offset. I went with 235/70R16 AT tires. I think if you go any bigger or wider you’ll need a lift kit. This vehicle is stock suspension and I had to pound in the seems so there is no rubbing when turning.

Hi there and thanks for watching. Yeah I used the original rack bars that are attached to the vehicle and then I purchased Cargoloc crossbars which are rated for 150lbs. and weigh 9lbs. themselves. The tent is 125lbs. and the Jeep is rated for 150lbs. on the roof. I haven’t had any issues with it so far. It’s very sturdy and doesn’t affect the handling of the vehicle while driving. Hope that helps.

Julian Dupont Yeah I think that should be ok with your setup. Our tent is called TMB and there is a link in the description for the details of it. I weigh 270lbs and my wife is another 140lbs. and we sleep in it just fine. It holds up fine and doesn’t ever seem unstable or breakable. Have you already attached yours?

I haven’t weighed with all the gear I can only guess. I would say the total overhead weight is about 190lbs and inside the vehicle about 100lbs plus whatever weight of the passengers. Is that what you mean?

That’s a nice ride and will convert nicely with all the add-on features. The vehicle handles well with the extra weight after swapping out the stock wheels for a slightly wider wheel package to give it a stronger foundation. Also adding an additional dedicated battery to power the fridge is a must to avoid damaging the vehicle battery. Hi Alice! Sorry to hear about your engine. I think the Liberty is a great vehicle and very underated. Mine has 180k miles and drives strong. How many miles do you have on it? I use high mileage synthetic oil and change every 3k miles religiously. It’s said the best thing to do for any vehicle is to maintain regular oil changes and excercise the engine by driving at least 55mph for 1hr. weekly.

@@nomadsrv927 it has 150k and the previous owner told me he had to fix the transmission but never told me that I would then need to fix the engine. I was only able to use the Jeep for two short months before the cylinder inside the engine cracked. I don’t think I was able to hit 3k miles in those two months. It’s been since June 2020 since the engine blew. A question I do have is when I do fix the engine should I also get the transmission looked at once the engine is placed in? My father wants nothing to do with my Jeep so I can’t even ask him anything. I came across your video and i absolutely love the way you fixed yours up. Hopefully I could get the chance to ride my boy again

Well at least you got some use out of it. It’s hard to tell the condition of cylinders and he may not have known. The only way I know to get a good idea is to do a compression test before you bought it. It’s equally hard to diagnose a transmission before anything goes wrong. Unfortunately it’s kind of a dice roll when buying used vehicles. I had to replace radiator, axle, axle bearings, rotors and brakes when I bought mine. Once you have everything replaced it should be good for at least another 100k miles.

@@MoisesFontana83 Thanks! I just attached some crossbars to the roof rack that I purchased from the auto parts store and then the awning and rooftop tent comes with all the attachment accessories. The back I custom built with supplies from Homedepot. I'm in the process of putting together a video that shows everything I did. I'll share it once it's published.

Easy to find mods for the JK, but us KJ owners have a hard time finding liberty mods. www.rocky-road.com/liberty.html Upgrades to the factory roof rails for those worried about it. But they have lift kits, roof racks, light bars, heavy duty ARB front bumper (winch capable) specific for liberty's!!! They even have a snow plow front adapter for a liberty!?! Hope this helps!

I used Crosswind A/T - 235x70r16 tires and Vision 85H SOFT 8 STEEL Rims 16x8 5x4.5 5x114.3 +0. I did have to pound down the wheel well seems to get the tires to fit without rubbing. Sure no problem. So in the wheel well towards the door opening at the bottom there is a metal seem where the frame of the body is welded together. It sticks out slightly enough to rub on the tire when turning the wheel left or right. That piece of metal has to either be cut off or pounded down with a hammer until it’s flush with the body so that the wheel has clearance. I’ll post a video of what I did.

Fiat Chriysler made a Stupid station wagon, A Fiat station wagon from the previous SUV 4x4 Cherokee. They are spoiling the Jeep brand..
