This is a tutorial video of my hardshell rooftop tent installation on my 2004 Jeep Liberty. I purchased the tent and rooftop crossbars on Amazon and have listed all the links below.
The tent is made of a hard plastic exterior for the top and bottom and metal railings for the frame. The fabric is a strong mold and waterproof canvas used for the walls.
The tent weighs approximately 150lbs. and comes with a telescope ladder, all the necessary hardware for installation and a wrench.
You will need to purchase your own crossbars to attach to your factory roof racks.
For this installation I was alone so I mounted the tent to the roof by myself however I recommend having at least two people to lift the tent on to the roof.

So glad i found your channel man. I have the exact same jeep down the the paint! Been wantong tovdo something like this with mine for a while as i just sleep in the back of mine woth the seats folded down whdn i do overnights. Really great job on this build, gsve me alot of good ideas and alot of good information. Thank you!!

Call me crazy but this unit would be excellent to convert a 6x4 or 7x5 utility trailer to a getaway camper ! Many people have utility trailers sitting around & once you made a couple of mounting rails this topper could be mounted temporarily to the top rails of the trailer which would leave lots of storage room underneath (in the bed of the trailer) for a kayak or bicycles, generator, fishing rods or whatever you like AND you would not need the ladder to get in it ;)

@@nomadsrv927 :) I just thought that I see utility trailers sitting in people's yards all the time, barely used but they are already paid for ;) Most of them have flat top 90 degree rails so the cross bars that mount to your car top camper can stay attached to the camper then the cross bars can be bolted through the rails of the trailer,... Four bolts to add the camper & the same four to remove it to get your trailer back !

Question? I have a patriot, but just went and got a thule ayer soft shell. How is the dynamic load working? I do need to get myself some cross bars still, but want to make sure i aint putting myself in a bad situation later down the road. I am living for a camping trip next 3 weeks. Speed limit is 80mph, no bumps or anything at that speed. Not sure about the camp site but will be takikg it slow since i dont need to run anyone over 😅 But id love for some feedbacks on how well the liberty handled. Id assume the patriot wouod handle the same way? Google and anyone else isnt much help but for the ones who did or done it lol

The dynamic load has been fine. I hardly know there’s anything on the roof. I usually drive around 70mph on the he highway with no issues. The Patriot is even more durable I believe and I think the owners manual should have the dynamic load rating listed. The Liberty says 150lbs but I think that’s conservative. I’ve had it for a year now and it’s held up great! The gas struts still pop up strong and the material hasn’t shown any significant wear from the weather.

NOMADS RV that’s awesome to hear. I’m in the market for a hard shell and I’m gathering reviews on the tomb. That cover, is it a plastic or fiberglass? You keep it up on roof full time?

Awesome! The shell is made of a hard plastic. Yeah it stays mounted on the roof permanently and honestly I forget it’s up there when driving around.

Isn’t the max roof capacity of a liberty 150 lbs? With your weight and wife and child , how hasnt the roof collapsed yet . I know the weight rating of the roof is 150 lbs cause i own a 2006 liberty and that is what Chrysler told my dealership after i ask’d them to find out for me.. just make sire there is no sharp objects pointing up in the jeep ya dont want to be impailed lol

Yeah they told me the same thing. I just took a chance and it’s been fine. I’m not an engineer but it seems like the weight is displaced from the crossbars to the vehicle roof racks which are on the perimeter of the roof where it’s strong. I’ll be sure to keep all sharp objects clear though. Thanks for watching👍🏽😄

So, from what I've heard these ratings are a "dynamic load" meaning a moving... bouncing load. The static loads are about 2x to 3x higher. Nomads RV are you sleeping in there with anyone else? Wife/Kids? Anyway I would very much suggest getting a burlier system going, I just ordered a replacement, solid steel siderail and crossbar system from rocky road outfitters.
