On this weeks video, we're finishing up the axle swap on the 1999 F350, and seeing if we can break it on the track!
This truck was originally owned by a friend of mine, who did a lot of work to it and had a lot of work done to it. He sold it a few years back, and now his friend purchased it back with plans on updating, and upgrading!
The first order of business is to put the updated suspension, and axles in this Early 1999 F350. In this video, we finish up the rest of the axle swap. Installing the rear axle, and associated parts like E-Brake cables and the driveshafts, as well as some testing!

Nice build. Thanks for making a video. Nonsense about plugging the vacuum actuated hubs.

Thanks! Yeah the vacuum hub thing is one of those things that’s just annoying

How much does a project like this cost? And can you take one more project like that?
@GarrettsOBSGarage
@GarrettsOBSGarage 11 месяцев назад
The parts can be expensive. Depending on what route you take and condition of the swap and truck. However. I would be willing to do this for others, under terms.

Thank you much for the vid! How much did the install cost you? Or how much would you charge someone? I def don’t have the lift or knowhow for such a job. One dude quoted me $13k. At that price I should just buy a 05-07 diesel. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

He’s not far off as long as he’s replacing literally EVERYTHING. He was under 13 and that included a new rear diff, and a bunch of new parts and upgrades to the axles. Including install. Each truck will cost a different amount. Depending on what your donor needs. And what your truck needs. And what you want. This truck needed all new brakes, new rear diff, new ball joints and universals and unit bearings. All new steering and steering stabilizers. Blue top steering box. All new brake lines. It’s pretty much “new” from the frame down.

Man... nice shop and equipment! Compared to doung this on hot asphalt in Fl fighting jacks and stands sinking in,ches downl, swarms of bugs, and rain, that looks fun! How many hours/ days?

That’s no joke! Nothing worse than working outside in the heat on something like that. I have about a week or so into this truck. That includes everything we did to it.

@@GarrettsOBSGarage those 30-second clips of the skid steer forks moving the axles were my most envious moments. Such a different job w the right tools.

@@luckyred1818 I’ve often said if I didn’t have that machine. I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing. The right tools really do matter. And sometimes I don’t have the right tools. But I make it work. Like using the skid loader to put cabs on. A 2 post would be ideal, but I don’t have the space or money for one. So the skid loader works. Haha

@@GarrettsOBSGarage i learned to wrench around in a local shop as a station attendant 35-yrs ago in high school. I remembered all these things like axle swaps being easier back then… been blaming age. Watching this I realized half of that easy was not working horizontally on stuff like this. Enjoy those tools, sir!

I noticed you said in the beginning, you were talking about all the benefits of a 05-07 front suspension vs a 99-04 front suspension and one of the things you said was it makes it ride “a little bit better”. Does it not make not much of a difference in ride quality? I was just surprised to hear you say that. That would be the number one reason I would be interested in doing this, for the ride quality. But if it only makes it ride “a little bit better” then I’m not so sure I’m interested in doing all that work.

When I say a little bit better. It’s a totally different ride. This truck rides a little better than it did. Since it had a lot of suspension softening before. The other truck we did, the 2001 F250. It rides better. But it also had the absolute softest springs you could get in a 99-04 truck. It all depends on what suspension package your truck originally had. We bumped weight carrying up on both trucks and improved the ride on both trucks. These swaps aren’t only for the ride. It’s about the whole package, the brakes, the steering, the turning radius, the ease of maintenance. The ride is always going to be better, but guys “say” the 05+ doesn’t ride better than a U code 99-04 truck, but it does. But at the same time, some guys may not notice a difference if their original suspension package is VERY soft. If you’re in a truck that’s got a plow prep or F350, you’re absolutely going to notice a difference. And if you go older, into the OBS era, it’s night and day. So, when I say a little bit better, it’s better, it really is, but you can go so much father with it in the aftermarket to make it ride ALOT better.

I have an 02 and want to do this. Possibly thinking about air bag springs on the front end. Will see how it goes. Looking for a good donor right now.

I swapped an '03 Dana 60 into my late '99 in place of the Dana 50. I put leveling "helper" springs in and the longer driveline hasn't been a problem.

I’ve got a 94.5 f350 cclb srw that I’m debating on doing the 05+ swap or just a rsk on the front I’ve already did the 08+ leaf spring swap from skys. I say all this asking your opinion on which direction I should go for the front I only really use the truck for hunting and to pull the boat. I’ve watched all your videos and really appreciate the info you provide!

Honestly. The 05+ is more involved. But maintenance is easier. Parts last longer. Brakes are better. Etc etc. it’s overall better. Just you can’t use old school wheels anymore. Thanks! I’m glad it’s helping!

What are the benefits of doing the swap versus rebuilding old axles
@GarrettsOBSGarage
@GarrettsOBSGarage 10 месяцев назад
Turning radius is better, better brakes, better hubs, more wheel options, easier to find parts, more suspension options. Depending on what year you swap in, the rear axle gets a bigger pinion, front axle is stronger…. Lots of benefits over the older stuff.
