This video (one of the only ones of its kind) goes over sealing an oil leak from the stator wire of a 2005 Harley Davidson VROD. This tutorial should also apply to any other VROD manufactured before 2010. Like and Subscribe for more Buffalo Peter wisdom and really cool shit!

Thank You Buffalo Peter for this fantastic tutorial video. The same scenario happened to me after an oil change. One thing about HD dealers, nobody wanted to tackle this repair, which told me one thing, either it's too hard or they are chicken. I watched your video about ten times and then did the repair. Not hard, just time consuming. Thanks again Bro ! Cheers !

Just finished applying the RVT. Waiting for it to dry and I'll get it back on tomorrow. Thanks for this video; very helpful. Things I learned: - My HD shop helped me remove the electrical connector as i didn't have the tool for that. - 3/8th o ring was perfect. I tried to use some thicker ones (outer radius) and it wasn't gonna fit through the side cover. - getting the RTV around the grommet is a pain. A toothpick or something similar to help smear it around is helpful. I only had a small seeping leak so I really hope this resolves it completely. thanks again!

Done and done. No more leak! Thanks for the vid. Might mention that the alternator cover is kinda held on by magnets, and the Service Manual lists a special tool to remove it (which my dealership couldn't even order). Most people seem to just pull the cover off without the tool (which I did), which makes the little install rods (makeshift or otherwise) really nice to have when refitting the cover. Just watch your fingers.

This worked great, thanks so much for posting it totally solved my oil leak issue. My video notes for others' reference: 1. remove stator wire connection from airfoil connection, the side cover comes off, screw on the bottom. 2. Then drain the oil 3. Remove the master electrical fuse (40 amp fuse) 4. Remove clutch linkage (no need if middle control'd bike) 5. Remove bolts from engine cover, bolt 14 to 1 per the chart. (screen shot video or refer to clymer manual) 6. Take off gasket, clean it, set it aside. 7. Take off side cover with stator completely (the magnets will resist beign pulled out)..clean everything using break cleaner. 8. Push rubber grommet into/towards the stator 9. To get the o-rings over to the grommet, unpin the connector you removed from the airfoil. label each wire so you remember the ordering (he used white out and one dot, two dots, three dots, etc.) 10. With the unpinned connector/dissassembled, feed the entire hose through the stator case hole to free up the entire cord. 11. Then add three o-rings : size 3/8” ID x 9/16” OD x 3/32” W (other sizes work, whatever you can get on the grommet and have the rings stay on when you jam the grommet back in. 12. Apply ultrablack to isntalled o-rings 13. apply ultrablack to grommet interface area 14. let it dry for one to two days. 15. ADD GUIDE BOLTS! IMPORTANT AS THE STATOR SNAPS BACK IN VIOLENTLY B/C OF MAGNETS. The size of the bolts you ened are 6mm x 70mm...cut off the heads using a metal saw. 16. add guide bolts (cut the heads off the bolts to help guide gasket) 17. put gasket on. 18. put side cover back on, careful with fingers, the magnets snap the thing back in. 19. tightben bolts , ordering 1- 14 per chart. then torque them all to spec. 20. re attach shift linkage…use loctite. 21. reconnect the wire to the airfoil connection 22. add master fuse 23. add oil back in (change oil filter if due for it).

Hey Peter, Great Video & Beautiful VROD. I am attempting to fix a weeping leak at the bottom of that cover by putting in a new gasket. Do I need to drain the bike before going at it if it's a motorcycle lift? Also, Should I get a new gasket or use that same stuff you have there at the bottom of the Cover? Thanks in advance my friend.

@DaddyLongLegs44
@DaddyLongLegs44 5 лет назад
I did some research as I did the same thing. Marker rubbed off getting the grommet back through. I read that it doesnt matter which wire goes where.
@tomheringer2047
@tomheringer2047 4 года назад
It really does not matter. One complete 360 degree rotation of the permanent magnet alternator will still produce 3 waveforms of AC voltage which will be rectified and regulated to 14.2 volts of DC voltage downstream in the voltage regulator.

About to try this on the 2004 VRSCA. I see that the manual recommends a special tool HD-45304 to use when removing/installing the alternator cover. I'm not really finding this available online and suspect it will be damn near impossible to get at this point. I don't see anybody else in the comments mentioning having one of these when doing the repair. Has anybody done this repair on a 2004 or earlier model without having that tool?
@buffalopeter2113
