If you're hearing what seems like lounder-than-normal road noise from the inside of your 2006-2011 Honda Civic, chances are that one, or both, of your rear wheel bearings are starting to fail.
This video outlines the procedure required to replace the rear wheel bearing and hub assembly on the 8th generation (2006-2011) Honda Civic equipped with drum brakes. The part number for this part is 42200-SNA-952 (LX and DX models). If you're replacing the wheel bearing/hub on a Civic equipped with disk brakes, then the part number you want is 42200-SNA-A52 (EX and SI models).
This video is meant to help and inspire people to tackle these sort of repairs themselves instead of throwing money away for labour costs. DIY!

excellent video on the proper procedure for replacing a wheel bearing hub. I would like to add what I consider an important step during re-installation, which I discovered from personal experience. After installing the new hub and starting the four mounting bolts at the rear, do not tighten them completely, but only snug them to allow some movement; at this point install the brake drum on the brake shoes and keep it in place temporarily with a couple of the wheel nuts, again not too tight. Now apply the parking brake to the rear wheels. (The point of all this is to allow the new bearing hub to center itself perfectly with the brake shoes. Although the bolt holes on the brake shoes mounting plate are of fairly close tolerance, they leave enough room to allow it to be out of center with the bearing hub and cause problems when braking.) Now, before releasing the parking brake, one can torque the bearing mounting bolts to spec., then release the parking brake and proceed to complete the installation.

Informative video and a good walk through. They are bolts, not screws for some that may be an issue when trying to get the M8 if needed. Also, I dont think your o-ring came off until you removed the hub. The o-ring is rubber, and when a bearing fails, heat is generated. The o-ring is compressed when installed and i think it just work hardened and was suck on. There was a small amount of corrosion but honestly, it looked almost new compared to what I have seen in the North East. VERY IMPORTANT in regards to O-Ring degradation /Failure, I saw you use your WD-40 Pen, I dont have your part or the manufacturer instructions but again, o-rings are rubber and some need a grease some do not, and what kind CAN BE, not always, very important. Some rubbers deterioration is vastly increased by hydrocarbons and chemicals.

On the 4 retaining bolts, should you partially torque each bolt prior to a final tightening or apply the full 47 ft.lb. to each bolt on the first try? It seems a partial torque, followed by a final full torque would assure equal distribution of force.

I changed both rear bearings and overtightened the bolts. Both bearings got bad the next day. Make sure to tighten the bolts to 46 ft lbs, no more no less.

excellent video I have mine to do this weekend because my lugs stripped the bolts on the hub! Do you think that it would be helpful to apply some copper anti seize to the back of the mating surfaces? or do you think it's unnecessary?
@mrdragancelan
@mrdragancelan 5 лет назад
If you're swapping from summer to winter tires (or vice versa) every other season, then it's probably unnecessary. But if you live in a warm climate year-round where the wheels don't come off as much, then maybe it couldn't hurt. The best way to ensure the same problem doesn't happen again is to tighten the lug nuts with a torque wrench every time. I've never used an anti seize compound and I've never had issues with stripped lug studs.

thanks for the diy video. At 8:44 , you are are using a torque wrench , 47 foot pounds; is this value same across all civics ? does it depend upon bearing's specifications that we brought?
@mrdragancelan
@mrdragancelan 7 лет назад
The spec is 47 ft-lbs for both drum brakes and disc brakes for the 2006-2011 Honda Civic (8th gen). The torque is normally dependent on the diameter and material grade of the stud that is being fastened. In this case it is a 10mm stud. I hope this answers your question.

Hello I’m having an issue with my rear drums I can’t seem to get them over the shoes any suggestions
@mrdragancelan
@mrdragancelan 5 лет назад
If you can, go for a short drive at low speeds and slowly engage the parking brake while you're driving. This can help reduce any rust ridges that have built up over time and may ease removal of the drum. If that doesn't work, you may have to adjust the parking brake (star adjuster) to pull the shoes inward to allow the drum to come off.

Yea you could but you'd have to press out the old bearing and press in the new one so if you have access to a press and adapters, go for it.

The outer race of the front wheel bearing is pressed into the knuckle assembly and the inner race of the bearing, I believe, is pressed onto the front wheel hub. Thus you'd need a slide hammer and possibly other tools to remove the front wheel bearing.
