You make this job look easy! To anyone sizing up this task, I've done everything on cars over the past 25 years.. except drum brakes. That said, I discovered there is no amount of cussing in humanity to curse this dreadful experience. I would gleefully drop my steering rack, or replace the synchros in my transmission over doing this horrid task ever again. I hate letting anyone touch my cars for service but I think this is one job I would take to a brake shop to have done to hold on to my sanity.

@@backyardchevy328 It seemed straightforward to me. I removed the wheels and drums to inspect today, and I'm down to less than 1.5mm brake shoe thickness. My drums on the inside look smooth. I don't see any leaking seals, and the springs all look good. I didn't check the horseshoe clamp, but I plan to reuse it as you showed. Crossing my fingers that it all goes well. The new shoes are only $22. New drums are only about $30, and they certainly are easy to replace (I got the M12x1.25mm bolts).

By far the best, most precise DIY tutorial video on RU-vid. Very clear and concise and like others have mentioned no fumbling around, no added nonsense right to the point. You had me finish the drums on my daughter's 2000 civic in 30 mins per side. You earned a sub!

I was putting long spring above the adjuster lever into the wrong hole and wondering why it didn’t have much tension on it at all and why the adjuster level wouldn’t seat properly, was so frustrating wondering what I could possibly be doing wrong, rewatched your video and realized I wasn’t putting the other end of the spring in the right hole, realized what I was doing wrong and grabbed some tiny vice grips and struggled but got it to go in the correct hole and then the adjuster level sat correctly. Lol it’s so great when you finally realize the simple thing your doing wrong and get it corrected, thanks again

I wanted to take a moment and thank you for this video - it really is perfect in all ways . As I was working along side the video , I’d get ahead in my mind on some detail - and sure enough you covered it . One small detail I messed up on - the lower part of the brakes need to be seated behind the lower flange - I placed it on top By accident and the drum rubbed on the outer face of the side of the brake pad . I’ve never done rear brakes - so it’s a small detail I won’t for forget next time . Thanks again !!

Great video overall. Clear instructions and good video work. One item though. I could not get the top main spring off/on using his method. No doubt he's much stronger than me. For those who find it difficult to remove and replace the spring... In order to stabilize the brake shoes, I strung several zip ties together and tightened them around the circumference of the shoes. I did this with two sets of zip ties to ensure shoes didn't shift alot and the ties didn't snap. This made it alot less strenuous to do this procedure. Hope this helps. Thanks again for the video.

You make this look super easy. For anyone attempting this repair, it's definitely challenging, but not impossible. Give yourself ample time, maybe get a helper, and get all the parts and hardware beforehand. Be careful with the brake cylinder thing with the bushings, it's very easy to push it out completely and get air into the system. I got air into mine and am taking it to the shop to get the brakes bled. Overall, tough but worth it. You learn a lot!!! Thank you for this video, it's a gem!!

I made the same mistake. I fitted the seal back onto the wheel cylinder and then I bled out the air in just the rear brake lines and fortunately the wheel cylinder seal is holding and everything is working well. I was too aggressive trying to remove the main adjuster spring and pulled off the seal on one side. I need to work out more to manhandle those vise grips. Pulling while guiding the spring end into its slot was crazy difficult for me.

@@mikew1368question - will this stop you from being able to put the drum back on? That’s the current problem I’m having. Thinking it might be because air got into the system. Adjuster is already in as much as possible
@mikew1368
@mikew1368 6 месяцев назад
@@DeclanLangenfeld I used brake cleaner and a rag to clean up the brake fluid that leaked out of the cylinder first, and then bled out the air. Finally I got the cylinder compressed and replaced the drum with no trouble. I think if you bleed the air out first, the drum will fit. Also it helped me determine if the cylinder was not leaking. When the rubber boot wasn’t fit well. When I pumped the brake it caused brake fluid to squirt out. I thought I might have ripped the rubber boot and needed to replace the cylinder, but no leaks observed, so I was happy and everything worked fine after I finished and tested it.

Drum brakes are a marvel of engineering ! They are incredibly sophisticated, yet incredibly simple at the same. Most all drum brakes have the same engineering built into them, and after you have done a handful of them, you will realize there are only a few basic principle parts built into them. They are super easy to work on, and any of you watching this video will agree after completing your first drum brake job, they are just simple-simple ! And they keep getting easier, once you have a few under your belt. You just kind of develop your own little “tips and tricks”, to get it done right. Great video !

Thank you. This was an excellent detailed description for the Civic drum brake service. I really appreciate your clarity and all the tips and explanations. At the end, I thought it would be best to back the adjuster off a bit more to remove all drag (but still be super close) since I always thought the shoes should not be in contact with the drums (unlike pads that are supposed to drag lightly on rotors) until you hit the brakes (and the auto-adjuster will keep it just off the drums). Do you feel it is best to leave a little drag?

@@backyardchevy328 Thanks, on concern I have is the shoes you linked on Amazon say "doesn`t fit" 09 Civic, thats why I`m going to the dealer, the cost there is $100 for a set of 4.

@@backyardchevy328 So an update for you Backyard. I decided to buy the OEM Honda shoes because mine were at a low 2mm, so after purchasing the set I discovered that brand new shoe pad was at 4mm?. So I`m no where near needing replacement. The shoes have been in the car for 7 years. I`m disappointed, I got your video memorized for the future though, lol. I`ll let you know the results,

@@xbrizzcakez yea rear brake pads hardly wear out since most of the braking and the weight is to the front..yes definitely🙂 but the video will also be there if u ever need it👍

Great video! I was able to follow step by step without any confusion. I have. 2012 Civic, so a few of the pieces were on the opposite side than the video, but it was easy enough to figure out. After completing the replacement I adjusted the adjuster screw so that everything turned pretty freely, but when I drove the car it felt like the brakes were engaged the whole time, the emergency brake, on the other hand, does not engage at all. I went back home and shortened the adjuster screw as short as it goes and everything spun freely until I drove and then the brakes stayed engaged the whole time again. It’s like the adjuster isn’t backing off after the brakes are engaged. Any ideas before I take to the shop?

Well when u press the brakes the wheel cylinder pushes the brake shoes out and the return springs pull em back so they dont stick...so i would just check the return springs to verify theyre on ok...if not I'm thinking it has something to do with parking brake..definitely check the cable near the shifter to make sure its attached..and not caught on something where the cable is getting pulled..but im thinking the cable may be stuck in the pulled position somehow

Great tutorial. Curious at the :21 spot you put the jack stand under the rear suspension. Is that an art form? I've been using only the side designed area to put the stand. Thank you.
