Ever wondered how hard it is to change your brake pads and rotors? Today we're changing the brake pads and rotors on a 2006 Mazda MX-5, and the same steps apply to most modern cars.
Yes, a bunch of tools needed, but tools are cheap and mechanics' labor is not!
YOUR SAFETY IS YOUR OWN RESPONSIBILITY! The general steps are the same for most cars, but the details may vary. Follow the manufacturer service manual for your car!
Parts:
(These are examples only - get the right one for your vehicle!)
* Centric Brake Rotors with E-coating - amzn.to/2Iwb0DG
* Hawk HPS brake pads (note front and rear!) - amzn.to/2KeQaGb
Supplies:
* CRC Brakleen brake cleaner - amzn.to/2wsybK4
* brake lube - Hawk brake pads come with a small packet of brake lube! OR
* brake lube - amzn.to/2rAdoP8
* Zip ties or string or coat-hanger wire
Tools:
(get these from Harbor Freight if you live near one!)
(double-check whether you need metric or SAE tools!)
* Breaker bar - amzn.to/2ypJOmf
* Torque wrench - amzn.to/2rAqGvc
* Socket set - amzn.to/2tlW2GK
* thin wrench set (metric) - may be useful for narrow spots - amzn.to/2taHSZD
* Turkey baster - get from grocery or kitchen supply store
* C clamp - amzn.to/2MGuODl
* brick - get from your neighbor's walls

I wash my new rotors in Dawn to wash off all the metal dust. It's just what I've always done. It's a good safety tip to put the wheel under the car. Great video

You need an impact driver for the 2 phillips on the rotors.

A great middle ground between scissor jack and floor jack is the trolley jack! You can find them anywhere, including Harbor Freight, for around $25. They aren't as nice as a floor jack, but they are MUCH better than the scissor jack.

I really Like the Centric Rotors. Hawk pads are a bit aggressive for daily driving. They can wear through rotors faster than the pads. I'd suggest a ceramic set purchased from your local part store. Most parts stores will warranty warn pads for the lifetime of your car. Just some additional info that would be nice to novice viewers. (Read more vvv ) When removing the screws, an impact screwdriver can really help. Sometimes the breaker bar with the Philips bit can strip the screw. Sometimes old rotors can be very stuck. If replacing, you can hit the rear of the rotor with a hammer to knock it off. If you have to save the rotor. Thread the lug nuts back on the studs so you don't mess up the threads. Then, hit the flat section between the studs around the rotor. This will break rust holding the rotor to the hub. After you clean up the hub, a thin layer of high temp anti-seize on the hub can help prevent future problems. Torque wrenches can usually be rented at a local parts store. It is recommended to crack the break bleeder when compressing the piston back into the caliper. This pushes old brake fluid, that could be partially broken down due to heat, out of the caliper instead of back into your system. Also, this prevents bleeder valves from being seized up by regularly breaking them free. (use caution when doing it this way. A broken bleeder valve is more difficult to fix. If you're not comfortable turning the brake bleeder screw, don't bother) Good info, good video.

MissE & MisterE These Hawk pads are their “street” pads which I’ve not tried before. Let’s see how well they hold up after a while. Using an impact driver actually didn’t work for me for removing the screws. Maybe my screws were too stuck or impact driver was not good enough. Thanks for the tips!

While you have the caliper slide pins out, clean them thoroughly and check for pitting (small holes)or ridges. If they’re bad time to replace them.

Great video. Do you know if it's the same for the rear?

Question: You mention removing the brake cylinder cap prior to pushing the piston back in. Would you put the cap back on once this has been completed or when you've pumped the brakes a few times at the end? Reason i ask is the last time i swapped my pads i did not do this.

Good job. Done it on other cars and now Im back with Mazda :D Any link or where can I find the exact torque specifications for various nuts and bolts? I have a 2015 Mazda 6 2.2 diesel Sport (Europe model). Thank you!
