Thank you to everyone watching, please go subscribe to see all of my content as soon as it comes out. Also, special thanks to Ben for letting me review is car (IG: @Bendorocke).
Things I should mention:
- Saabs have always been known for their safety, they obsess over it.
- There is an optional 2.8 turbo model.
- In certain markets, the 2.0T made 175 horsepower.
- Saab wasn't trying to be "quirky" and "fun" with the windshield wiper placement. Something just broke on Ben's car, and now that's where they rest when not in use.
- Saab still makes planes!

If you finished the video, I conclude that it is an excellent car for the money. Back when it came out though, and next to the competition from Lexus, Mercedes and Volvo, it was not impressive to me, too much going on and the materials were not great. Some like the techy feel though and I respect that, to each their own, just not for me.
@dclay8412
@dclay8412 5 лет назад
777jones- I agree. He is comparing the interior to newer or higher model cars, I would say on a subconscious level! If I compared it to a Lexus' interior I would say the Saabs interior is blah.. and I really like these cars and would buy one without a second thought at the right price and a we'll kept one..... ok it would be the 6 cylinder model.

The interior is definitely the weakest in its class but the design and look is quite appealing. The green displays and lots of buttons lend it a high tech feel, at least in the public's perception of fighter jets. It's especially charming at night.

Had the experience of this as a 12 year old. My aunt and his husband took me to Croatia several times for summer holiday and we went there driving in his 2006 9-3 2.0t. Its a thirsty whore if your foot is heavy but oh boy did I love that car. The layout of the dash is just very nice. Yes quality is a bit week but the buttons still felt really good tough. About to get my first car and Im looking at this very car. Its still relatively easy to get parts here in the EU as there are companies manufacturing them so its all good for now :)

They improved the interior on the '07. Dropped a lot of buttons. I owned a '02, '05 and two '07s. The first '07, Chili Red like yours, was a lemon. Fouled out the plugs every 3k miles. Get an oil change, change the plugs - dealer could never find the cause. I replaced it with an '07 60th Anniversary edition (same engine) and never had that problem again (I still have it as a daily driver with 150k miles). Now for the struts that you replaced... the factory struts lasted me about 100k miles. The 2nd set about 25k. I'm approaching that 25k mile mark for the 3rd set and already hear them creaking on cold mornings - waiting for both springs to snap which they will. At nearly a grand to replace each set with OEM (no aftermarket replacements available) - when they snap this time I'll probably trade it in. My advice is learn your MPG. If it hasn't already your fuel level sensor will die & a full tank of gas will show as empty. That will run about $500 to fix or you can just zero out the trip odometer at every fill up and gas up again when you hit about 300 miles. For an 11 year old car it's held up well though.
@Realistick
@Realistick 5 лет назад
Damn, you haven't had much luck with yours, I'm sorry, at that point you should just trade it for a cheap Lexus or something. Might be pricey but they are about the only modern luxury brand with reliability and relatively cheap repairs (non v8s)
@hoppysport2872
@hoppysport2872 5 лет назад
When I needed to replace my suspension parts on my 2008 9-5 at 87,000 miles, my independent SAAB specialist recommended the OEM Sachs front struts and Bilstein shocks in the rear. He said from experience that was the best combo and result. At the same time I replaced my worn subframe bushings. I picked up the parts and they were professionally installed. Total cost for all was $925. That was a good deal and it transformed the car. I live in Manhattan and the roads are awful, so I suspect that I'll be doing this again in another 6 years. One thing that I did was buy 25mm spacers for the rear shocks. Yes, it does raise up the rear a bit, but really helps on rough roads and when carrying heavy loads.
@hoppysport2872
@hoppysport2872 5 лет назад
I bought a 2008 SAAB 9-5 in 2013 with 60,000 miles. Paid $10,500. Since new, including the original owner, $3000 has been put into the car...mostly preventative and wear parts. Only non wear parts were a valve body ($302) and a heater bypass valve ($50). Both included labor. My SAAB independent mechanic is reasonable and let's me supply the parts. You're absolutely right...not worth the money new...but pre-owned...wow! My 9-5 was up against the BMW 5-series, Volvo S60 and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Those were smoother and more luxurious. However, the 9-5 is far more reliable...far more! On top of that, my 9-5 has just about the most comfortable seats I've ever experienced.
@Realistick
@Realistick 5 лет назад
Saab really did a good job with the parts given, still sad to see them go, glad you are having a good experience with yours. The Germans really don't compete too well after ten years (due to cost to maintain), which is a shame, especially with BMW, who used to make some really good engines.
@hoppysport2872
@hoppysport2872 5 лет назад
@@Realistick Many criticize SAAB for using GM parts. To me this was a positive. GM/Delco parts are well-made and last a long, long time. I agree that some interior bits are not the most luxurious, but the cabin in my 2008 9-5 is pretty nice. Only issues are door handle grab bar coatings peel. A friend has a 2008 BMW 5-series that's an endless money pit. He spends $5,000+ a year maintaining it. My 2008 SAAB 9-5 has required a total of $3,000 in parts and maintenance since new. I bought a new 1991 Toyota Cressida. Drove it for 20 years. At the end it needed a head gasket and resulting work. Sold it for $9,600...only because I wanted a car with airbags. Otherwise I would have spent the $1,500 to fix the head gasket. One thing about my SAAB...it has never stranded me. Always starts on the first crank (even in 5° temps) and goes and goes.

The 9-3 in this review is a base line model. I wish you had the chance to review a 9-3 Aero with the 2.8 liter engine. It is a vastly more enjoyable car. Having said that, the 9000 CSE in my opinion was the last pure SAAB car produced. The 9-3 does not even compare to the 9000 CSE in terms of luxury and comfort. The 9-5 Aero, great car. Like any other car, it is only as good as the maintenance it's given. I currently own three SAABs with almost 400,000 cumulative miles, and they have never left me by the road side waiting for a tow truck. You look at any of the failings of the 9-3, and it has General Motors written all over it.
@Realistick
@Realistick 5 лет назад
I wish I could get the chance to drive a 9000 or another classic saab. The 9-3 is a nice little car but it didn't have the best parts bin, you know? I'm sure the 2.8 would have been more thrilling but still, I feel like the old ones were probably a completely different animal and I'm just curious how they would drive.

@@Realistick I owned a 1998 9000 CSE before it was hit and wrecked by a distracted driver on her cell phone. The 9000 CSE was the epitome of comfort. The workmanship was second to none. Sitting in the 9000 felt like sitting in a first class seat on a 747. It was a wonderful car. So I replaced it with 2002 9-5 Aero. A terrific car in its own right. SAAB engineers managed to hold the line to make it as SAAB-like as possible. The 9-3 unfortunately feels more GM than SAAB, but my 9-3 Aero has not had any issues in the 3 years I've owned it. Cheers.

I agree the pre-face lift interior leaves a little to be desired. The face lift interior definitely improves things, though it’s still the weakest point of the 9-3. I’d say a manual Aero is definitely where it’s at if you want better handling etc.

I bought a 1999 Saab 95 when I was in a broke and in a budget back in 06, I am not in a budget anymore, I can afford any car under $100k and guess what I got? I got me a 2006 Saab 93 2.0t and I am putting $7k-10k in repairs and upgrades because no other car has ever given me more satisfaction than a Saab, I still got a BMW and a Merc, but I just miss driving my Saab. Saab is the car most people don’t know what it is and wouldn’t understand why someone would buy it, but those of us who had one understands it. My Saab does not make any financial sense, since this cars are not worth the money I am putting in, but there’s an emotional connection with the brand.

I disagree with your point about it having the worst interior in its class. The interior in my 2007 9-3 is mint, buttons arent peeling, the dash is intact, and it looks so flush, sporty, stealthy, and attractive. However, the dash slightly makes a little noise but that doesnt change my mind. I might have to say the interior in my 9-3 is better than any mercedes in that era and MAYBE even the Volvo. The seats also have bolstering to keep you planted in when you drive. One of the best 2000s sport sedans imo

great cars for the money as far as safety and quality but not strong on reliability. I would recommend getting one ONLY! if you know how to work on them, otherwise you'll fast dump triple the money these cars are worth. Unless you're a DIY don't touch with a 5 foot pole.

Any reason why?

@@Realistick There are many reasons why ... incorrect informations (3.0 engine mentioned in the description does not exist), no knowledge about trim levels (aero, vector, linear, arc, turboX ...). Incorrect specifications, this 2.0 engine has several variants (150, 175 and 210hp), not "in certain markets, 2.0T made 175 horsepower". Also, if model is with 150 or 175hp they do not carry a 2.0T , they are 2.0t (small "t"). It's great to make a videos about cars, but when you do it, you need to prepare well. You did not and that's why you have more than 35% of dislikes.

@@milosrog I barely mentioned specifics as this was a quick, not in-depth review , I went off of what the 9-3 specs were for this year on Motor trend. The high dislikes comes from people disagreeing with my opinion, whenever I say something like "this interior isn't as good as its competitors" or "it's slow compared to the competition," people can't take it, especially if the car has a cult following, just look at the comment section. You have to take into account this is a 2006 in America, also, yes there was a 3.0 turbo in America. Here's a link. www.motortrend.com/cars/saab/9-3/2006/2006-saab-93-aero/

I made this video with a phone and a used GoPro, my personal car was an 18 year old Toyota and it doesn't matter, my financial situation is not relevant. I work at a dealership where I get to see a large variety of cars, old and new, luxury or not, I didn't like the interior because there was too much going on, most other outlets had the same opinion, the competition looked a bit more clean (Note, people have complained about this review and said their 07 Saab interiors are great, but the 06 that I reviewed had a different interior). Some people like it and that's cool because this review is subjective.
