Wow what a rare find! Glad you pulled the trigger on this bike

Tapered roller bearings are extremely sensitive to torque settings. I struggled to get a good feeling putting these one of my bikes in the past. The bearings always felt tight as if the bike couldn’t change direction easily. Long story short, I went back to stock type ball bearings and the feeling was night and day better. Be sure to torque the tapered units to the right torque and check them often.

If I still have issues with these I'll likely convert it back to ball bearings.

@@PracticalEnthusiast any update ? :p curious about the tapered vs ball

@@Automan9 I've only ridden it once since this video, and it rode perfectly. I tried to take a video of it but the audio was no good. I'll try and make an update when I can find time (and good weather) later this year.

Not torque on bearings.. preload to the load on the bearings.. tighten to no free play then to bearing makers spec

@@PracticalEnthusiast taper bearings on the bottom.. ball on top.. resistance ISN'T the problem most make out.. it serves like a steering damper.. but.. you don't want ANY notching or center set.. just needs to be smooth.. I've always used 140 gear oil which tends to stay gathered/glooped around balls & rollers I think from liquid surface tension rather than grease which spreads away from them

I am not a motorcyclist but I find all of these repair videos very interesting. I have done some bicycle repair, though, and it's funny how similar (yet different) this part of the motorcycle is to the bicycle. question - if the bearing races in the "head tube" are damaged, is is possible to press in new ones? also, thanks for the early Christmas present (this video), Peter ! happy holidays to you and yours

Very possible. I’m setting up to do it to one of my motorcycles soon so I can change the fork diameter. New bearings and races are $30-50 usd. Same special tools make it easier but they’re not necessary.

Happy holidays to you as well! Yep, the races can be replaced! There are special tools out there to do it but haven't bought them yet.

@@PracticalEnthusiast no different to replacing car wheel/axle bearings .. judicious use of a punch & chisel does fine in minutes

Another timely video. I have to adjust my bearings a little tighter to get rid of some play. Just a side note. It seems like there was a lot more “heavy breathing” in this video than I remember from your past ones. Is it a new microphone or placed in a different spot?

Is this fix now? Have same issue. And i feel clunk at hard front braking. And its also woble at low speed

Yep, no more issues. Sounds like your bearing may need tightened or replaced.

Couldn't you remove the lower bearing?

You would have to cut it

It's pressed on. You only really remove it if you're replacing it.
