Tony Schumacher hit the sports equivalent of a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth of Game 7 of the World Series being down three with a full count and the bases loaded. Doug Kalitta had narrowly missed a shot to clinch the Top Fuel world title in the semifinals when he lost to Schumacher’s teammate, Melanie Troxel, on a holeshot. To win the title, Schumacher had to not only win but also set the national e.t. record in the final. “The Sarge” did just that with a 4.42-second e.t. that would forever go down in NHRA history as “The Run.”
