I agree about Promiscuous being corny or them not having much chemistry, but come ON. The production is immaculate. It makes the club feel like this pit of desperate lovers who will rather die than go home alone. It’s fun but really intense as a silly club song about two people falling for each other.
I’m a fan of Nelly and I was taken aback by your take on Promiscuous. The beat is so freaking catchy, the horns are a highlight of the track. Frankly, I think the back and forth from Nelly Furtado and Timberland works just fine for the song. Obviously Timberland isn’t known for his singing abilities, but his voice doesn’t sound terrible. Lastly, I’ll add that the song has held up surprisingly well in the course of two decades and the young generation still thinks it’s a bop.
Sexyback deserved higher but hasn’t aged that well. Promiscuous is a fucking track and still goes off at clubs. The chemistry between Nelly Furtado and Timbaland is undeniable.
It's a shame Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani didn't make the top 10 because it's an absolute banger and is probably the most popular song of that year when people make throwback playlists

I love seeing Bad Day get the F tier here, because my younger sister was adopted from China, and when she was a little girl, she started first speaking English by singing the lyrics to that song in the car when my parents had it on the radio. Drove my siblings and I crazy but my parents thought it was the cutest shit ever. Now I'm 25 and she's 19 and in college. Time flies, eh?
my god during my bi-annual middle school dances, they would play the music video for songs alongside the song... the ONLY slow song they would play was "you're beautiful" and every time the song would end with him jumping off that cliff while sweaty children awkwardly shuffle back and forth...

What I remember most about “You’re Beautiful” was all the actual couples in real relationships with one another who had the chorus to that song as their ringtone for when they called each other, not realizing how egregiously out of context that was. And “Bad Day” being used on every American Idol contestant to be eliminated, every football team who lost their game, etc…I didn’t even realize it was actually a real song until months later. Ladies and gentlemen, the biggest TikTok hits of 2006!!
"Bad Day" is one of those songs where once you've heard the chorus, you've pretty much gotten the idea of the whole thing and are ready to move onto something else.

Melon, your finger has strayed from the pulse if you think Nelly is no longer relevant while so many of her Loose hits have been blowing up on TikTok for at least the last year, and Give It To Me and Say It Right in particular has been showing up everywhere in remixed or sped-up forms. Her return to the stage after a 5-year hiatus at Beyond The Valley on NYE last year was such a testament to her cultural impact. It was the energetic high point of the 4-day festival, and yes I was there. While criticisms of the lyrics are valid, Promiscuous is undeniably still a banger. I work in a bar where they've been playing it every week since I started, and even in that context, it's always the energetic high point of the night. It's far from one of her better songs, but the cultural staying power is undeniable.
its crazy how 2006 is the last time the world ever treated rock music as a mainstream thing with The Black Parade, and Muse's Black Holes album. Amy's Back to Black is quite an influential album within the UK soul movement.
Saying it’s the “last time” seems a bit early. There were a number of hit rock singles and albums after ‘06. For example, Kings of Leon had a top 5 album with multiple hits (including “Use Somebody” which peaked at #4 in the U.S.) in 2008.
Arctic monkeys released their FIRST album in 05-06 iirc, and all of their albums besides one went straight to number 1. Even now there’s plenty of rock and alt artists who are big. It’s still a mainstream thing, just not the biggest anymore

I would put 2009 as the last year that guitar-heavy music could make the charts. That one Nickelback album hit the charts, as did Shinedown with Second Chance. But yeah, after that, any “rock” hit needed to be pretty much entirely synth based.

For the younger people who may not realize this: Keep in mind that the actual release dates of these songs are kind of all over the place, and not even all of them (most?) are from 2006. For example, Bad Day is from January of 2005. The way these charts work is kind of wonky.

I'm a fan of Nelly! 2006 was the year I got my first iPod...it was mainly because of Crazy and Promiscuous (which just got dragged to hell). However it put me on to Say It Right which...fire!
Funny thing about You're Beautiful, James Blunt basically said all the things you said about it. It was made to be one of those "romantic" sounding songs that is really about a stalker who should be locked up
The Vice documentary with Unwritten was pretty wholesome. The song was even used in a remix for a Tik Tok dance and received a second resurgence with Natasha Bedingfield embracing the new gens listening to it.
I was 10 in 2006. I broke my arm in half, my parents got divorced, and then I got appendicitis and spent the last few months of the year in the hospital. What a cool and awesome year.
I feel EXTREMELY validated by that Sexyback take. I heard that song CONSTANTLY around the late 00s at school, at parties, etc and it always annoyed the shit out of me. Now it's been years and I wonder if I was being too hard on it due to overexposure, but this makes me feel like I wasn't crazy lol.
"Crazy" certainly isn't underrated... and honestly, it deserves to be the one song we know. It stands head and shoulders above anything else they ever made.

Can you shout out "Weird Al's" classic parody of the Chamillionaire song? I think it's his best rapping on a track by far- the bars are straight dope, parody or otherwise, and there's just nothing lazy about his performance whatsoever. He attacks the verses like he's energized and inspired talking about eating cereal with milk and kicking it with Steve Urkel (or whatever us white boyz would presumably be doing on a Sunday morning).
Bad Day is not a great song but I'll always cherish the memory of a moment I had with a great friend, singing the chorus out loud, both absurdly drunk, lying on the floor of a party, after both got rejected
True story: In 2007 I went to Thailand with three friends. We ended up going to a ping pong show for a laugh, but it ended up way crazier. Anyway, at one point a naked girl comes out, followed by a naked guy, who starts going down on her. The song playing...Bad Day. Then he gets on top and they start going at it. The song playing...You're Beautiful! The only regret I have now is that Anthony wasn't there with us lol

I like Nelly's music but I definitely feel like Promiscuous is overrated and her older singer songwriter stuff was more interesting. She leaned into her identity more too.
