I think the lyrics to Hollaback Girl were intended to be a little cringe tho. The song is written with the context that Courtney Love was talking smack about Gwen, Gwen thought that was some high school behavior not becoming of adults so she wrote a song that sounded like it was made in high school, marching band and everything. I think that's the part that makes me love it.

@VolvoImpala Год назад
I think I get your complaint about "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" but it seems like the production exactly as you describe it fits the song, doesn't it? It's a desolate song on a drab, derelict landscape with lyrics that match. I don't even mind the guitar chord progression going "around the world" with E, G, D, A. All cowboy chords, by the way, as I've heard them called. I could say those four chords are as standard and rote as they come but if you can still bring some fire, bring something new then I'm pleased. Maybe I'm easily pleased. I love it when Pearl Jam does it for the epic solo part and chorus to "Ahh ohhh uhhhhh hhhuu uhhhh I'm still alive oooh ooo oh woah!" LOL, you have to sing that in your head as you read it. Now you can't get it out. Gotcha, b*tch! I don't care. It's a grunge song about surfing (the PJ song) which is probably the last thing we do up here but Eddie wrote it on his board in San Diego and there's room in grunge for outsiders. We are outsiders! Everything above the northern California border is the wilderness. Tucker Carlson doesn't even know that Olympia is in Washington- thinks it's in Oregon even though it's our capitol. Oh well, I guess I have to forgive him down there in the Californian capitol of Sack-and-Leno.

Since U Been Gone is only so good because Dr. Luke and Max Martin admittedly ripped the whole thing off of "Maps" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
@JonBenG808
@JonBenG808 Год назад
It's interesting to think of the ranking from a credits point of view. "Don't Cha" was produced by Cee-lo Green, while both "Candy Shop" and "Let Me Love You" were produced by Scott Storch (and written by Ne-Yo).. Speaking of writers, Dr. Luke was involved with Kelly Clarksons D-Song (lol) while Max Martin was in for "Since You Been Gone" and could be one of the reasons for the lil extra pop behind it. Pharrell/Neptunes did "Hollaback Girl" besides other probably musically richer collaborations with Gwen Stefani ("Can I Have It Like That?"). Jazze Pha did the Ciara track and also other pretty good productions for her debut. Jermaine Dupri did the song for his good friend Mariah and though the critique is pretty much on point, some of it is just by choice as the (drum) sound of SoSoDef was just that back then and he succeed greatly with it. Also, Johnta Austin also wrote quite a lot of other good R&B songs besides "We Belong Together", just not that as successful, sadly.

I agree with Gold Digger not being S-tier. Kanye does have better singles. I don't see why it isn't A-tier though. @mandobrownie

I'm actually really lost why the Clarkson songs are in such different tiers because they're extremely similar. The biggest similarity is the guitar, drum, bass, and vocal processing. The mix is a bit different for each track, but everything is clean compressed as hell with all the sparkle and dirt completely removed. They sound like Kidz Bop instrumentals. Since You've Been Gone is more intense and a bit more impassioned, but even with that being true the corniness of each track is about the same. I almost feel like Melon is just directly contradicting himself here (which is fine, consistency is the hobgoblin of the mind etc.)

Can't believe you immediately changed your opinion on "Since U Been Gone" once it was included in the top 5 of Billboard's Top 500 Best Pop Songs Of All Time list. You said that the verses are as engaging as the chorus here, but in your newest video you say that the verses are filler and the song overall is a whiny boring mom rock instead of a rager. 🤨

MCR releases an overdramatic but epic pop punk rock opera in the mid-2000s that takes the world by storm Anthony: “Amazing. Incredible. Deserves classic review.” Green Day releases an overdramatic but epic pop punk rock opera in the mid-2000s that takes the world by storm Anthony: “Boring. Bland. Steady. Overrated.” I love both albums to death. I can understand how someone wouldn’t like either of them though. I just think it’s strange how someone can love one album but basically hate the other album when both pretty much do the same exact thing and have the same effect. It would be like someone loving Alice In Chains’ “Dirt” but hating Soundgarden’s “Superunkown”. It’s something I’ve wondered ever since the Black Parade classic review.
