Even after beating the New York Mets in the NLCS, not many people gave the Cardinals much of a chance to beat the Tigers in the World Series. With the Championship Series going the full seven games, the Cardinals rotation wasn't in a position to start one of their regular postseason starters in Game One. Instead, they turned to a rookie that had been, in no uncertain terms, mostly awful in 2006. All he did was beat Tigers rookie sensation Justin Verlander, mowing down Detroit to help give the Cardinals an all-important win in Game One.
