Toyota Sienna 2GR-FE Spark plug replacement requires removing the plenum and the bracket. This video shows how to remove the right 12 mm screw and how to easily reinstall the plenum (the hardest part of the whole process). This video applies to many Toyota and Lexus models equipped with engine 2GR-FE 3.5 L.

I did not mention in the video that you need to be aware of the VVT sensor socket in the back near the back coils , beware of ripping it off like I did. There was no video to warn when I did it but now we have: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JoS28JFa9A4.htmlsi=ivxWO11Qm21TuG_D

It was impossible for me to put that bracket back on. I was stuck for hours until I remember your video then I took out my grinder and cut an opening like you did. And the rest was a breeze! Thank you so much!

I never got the courage to replace the plugs till the idea came to my mind. I made a mess ripping off the VVT socket but luckily I solved the problem prior to putting things back together. I made a separate video about the VVT socket.

Awesome tips! The plenum bracket hack, genius. Before uuying 1/4 hex drives, I checked with my 3/8" drive and didn't have a problem.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I was able to replace mines, without taking the wiper motor section out.

You're welcome. Removing the wiper motor and the cowl is the easiest part. I know it adds up the time, but for few inches here and there it really makes the job much easier, specially for something you won't do for the next 100K miles/10years.

I could not get that right 12 mm in after ~2 hours of trying (and dropping it many times). Great idea cutting the bracket and sliding it in !!

removing the top 12 mm mounted on the intake manifold was much much easier than trying to reach the bottom and even easier to reinstall later at least in my experience
@PickyOne
@PickyOne 2 года назад
If you choose to remove the top one, you still need to remove the bottom one to take out the coil. So, why doing 2 screws?

Holy crapola !! I think I'll take my Sienna to Toyota or qualified mechanic to do all this work. I don't think the engineers at Toyota gave a damn about how much work they were dropping on the heads of hard working mechanics; to simply change freaking spark plugs. At least at the dealership, if they screw it up, they gotta fix it. But I do compliment you on your great work.

It is not your average DIY job, you still need some experience in spark plug replacement prior to jumping into this challenging job. I watched over four videos and read over five forum discussions before I collected my courage to do it. It is once in a lifetime job whether the lifetime of your van or your life.

For the 2007 Sienna V6, here is my solution for dealing with the two 12 mm bolts behind the passenger side of the air intake plenum, without cutting a slot in the bracket, and minimizing the time spent: 1) Get a 12 mm Ratcheting Flex Head Combination Wrench, 3/8” Universal Joint Socket Adapter, 24-inch claw pickup tool and Permatex Anti-Seize Compound, all available at Menard’s or other popular stores. 2) Use the ratcheting wrench to loosen the upper bolt behind the plenum on the passenger side. The bolt is angled upward a bit, so you need to get the wrench onto the bolt with the correct orientation. Once it is on the head, the ratchet makes it easy to get it loose enough (about half way out) to remove it the rest of the way by hand. Leaving it halfway out will leave enough space between the bolt head and the wiring harness to get the wrench back out. 3) Cover the white plastic edges at the left side of the plenum with duct tape to protect your arms. 4) With your left hand, reach around behind the plenum, with your thumb and middle finger on either side of the wiring harness, loosen the bolt by hand. When it is almost out, support it with your right hand over the top and behind the plenum, and push it into your left hand to secure it and pull it out. 5) With the plenum off the top of the engine, you can now get at the lower 12 mm bolt that holds the bracket for the upper 12 mm bolt that you just removed from the back of the plenum. The lower bolt ties that bracket to the engine block, at a downward angle. 6) Put a rag behind the lower 12 mm bolt to catch it if you drop it while removing it. Place the rag so you can pull it out after putting the plenum back in. 7) With the universal joint between the 12 mm socket and a 6 in extension on the ratchet, loosen the 12 mm lower bracket bolt, then pull it out by hand. 8) Apply a thin coat of anti-seize compound to the threads of the bolt, then grab the threads of the bolt with the pickup tool, so that the tool is perpendicular to the bolt. 9) Starting from the driver’s side, with your right hand, thread the pickup tool and bolt in between the spark plug wires and wiring harness toward the hole you just removed the bolt from, such that the pickup tool shaft is perpendicular to the angle at which the bolt needs to go into the hole. 10) With your left index and middle fingers, move the bolt into position over the hole to get the threads lined up properly. 11) Push the plunger on the pickup tool in very slightly to release just enough tension on the bolt to allow you to get the bolt threaded in enough so it stays in place on its own. Remove the pickup tool claws from the bolt, leave it sitting back there, then thread the bolt further down into the hole with the ratchet & universal joint, to get the anti-seize compound into the female threads in the engine block. This gives you practice so you can repeat this with the plenum back in place, makes it easier to get the bolt in at that time, and it gets the bracket out of the way of the spark plug. 12) Remove the 12 mm lower bolt again with the universal joint and extension. Re-attach the pickup tool claws to the bolt threads and let that all sit there over the rag, with the bolt resting just below the empty hole. 13) After changing the rear plugs and changing the three pairs of gaskets on the underside of the plenum ($20 or so), attach the bracket to the rear of the plenum with the upper 12 mm bolt. Tighten it down almost all the way, just enough to let you move the bracket with just a bit of resistance. This puts the lower bracket hole in pretty much the right location to get that lower bolt in. 14) Reinstall the plenum and hand tighten the two 10 mm nuts on the outside front corners of the plenum to set the rear bracket in a good spot. 15) With your right hand on the plunger of the pickup tool, use your left index and middle fingers to feel the lower bolt hole, the lower bolt head and threads, and work that bolt into position over the hole, picturing that angle that it needs to go in at. You might need to wobble to bolt around a bit to find that spot where the threads line up well. 16) Push the plunger on the pickup tool ever so lightly to remove just a bit of claw tension on the bolt and start to thread the bolt in with your fingers. You will know when it’s in! If it doesn’t happen right away, take a break and come back. It only took me a couple minutes to get it! When the bolt is threaded in enough for it to stay in by itself, remove the pickup tool claws from the threads. 17) Tighten the lower bolt with the universal joint and socket extension, by moving the socket onto the bolt head with your left fingers. This also takes a few tries, but you will eventually get it…should not take long. 18) Finish by tightening the upper bolt with the ratcheting flex head wrench and removing the rag from below the lower bolt. The rest if the job is easy now!!

I followed the video instructions and the time I spent cutting the bracket was less than the time you spent writing this comment. You missed the point of saving time of multiple attempts to put the screw back, let alone saving time when removing the plenum again for any other reason in the future.
@johnseevers9727
@johnseevers9727 3 года назад
The intent of what I wrote was not about how much time it took me to write it, but to point to a method to save time for anyone else who either does not want to cut a slot in the bracket or have the tools to do so. Perhaps cutting the bracket would save a bit of time on a future plug change, but what I have written should not take much more time for anyone than it would with the slot in the bracket. With either method, what I see is that a universal joint with the socket wrench is the best way to loosen and/or re-tighten the lower bracket bolt behind the plenum.

@@johnseevers9727 There is no easy way to get the back 3 bolts out of the plenum. I don't care what anyone says. I just did this job on a Lexus rx 400h. H is for hybrid. There is less room than you guys are dealing with on this van. I had to get it from underneath of the vehicle. Nightmare. Took 3 hours to remove 2 bolts and the same to install them.

The hose from the back of the intake manifold that you pointed out, where does the other end go? I’ve been looking for it but can’t find it.
@PickyOne
@PickyOne 22 дня назад
It goes to the brake booster, look behind the brake fluid reservoir. You can keep it attached on both ends and put the plenum on the battery or any place that won't block you from working. I did another van and I was confident enough to just set it aside without disconnecting it. It's up to you. But watch out for the dirt coming out of the plenum.

I guess I was lucky when I did my spark plug replacement about 50k mile ago. Was able to put that screw back there wit little difficulty. Now it’s the time to replace one coil. I’ll probably use your method for the future! Do you think I should install new plenum seals? I put the new ones in last time.

What I heard from a Toyota technician that they remove the old one anyway if it's not the updated part (3 orange ones part 171760P021). With all the work involved, I won't go cheap and not replace them. Make sure you get them OEM and from a legit source, I got them from my local Toyota dealer for around $8.00 each.

You could also add a blob of hot glue on the plenum bracket, so you can feel the blob when installing the bolt back on

How bout just remove that left bracket completely. It just a plastic intake manifold and it's already hold by two brackets on the right side to hold it against vibration.
@PickyOne
@PickyOne Год назад
I thought of that myself, but I assume that it helps reduce the vibration that causes a harmonic sound pitch due to the air passing through manifold. That's why it needs to be held on both sides. I could not find any source that support that but I went by assumption. The other thing that made me insist on reinstalling it is that in case another mechanic wants to work on that area and wants to support his body weight on the manifold, without the bracket, it could crack the manifold.
