The B7 Audi A4 ran from 2004 to 2008 and was an elegant Walter De Silva designed large family car, here we look at the Avant, or estate version of the model

Agreed. The B6 was a very elegant and classy car, this is where Audi decided to abandon that and go all shouty. It’s worked out for them, it feels like there are more Audis than people but it’s a shame that we don’t get these smooth, understated cars any more.

I love the B7! Have to comment on this on! The 2010 Passat Estate we have, has no soul compared to the B7. Also one of the nicest indicator ticks and an interior of pure quality. Also.. I had a ride in a Corsa C yesterday. I think you must get one on the channel! For my generation the SXI with the white dials, was the bees knees at the time! I have a soft spot for them and they are a decent car. 😊👍

There is one big problem with the 2.0TDI PD engine in these and the same age of A6 - the oil pump. Small hex key inside eventually rounds off and starves the engine of oil. It has nothing to do with how well the car is serviced and is simply a design flaw. Upgraded parts are available and best to fit them when the timing belt is being done. This does not affect any of the transverse mounted 2.0TDI PDs or any of the common rail 2.0 TDIs (CR) bar some very early B8 A4s. It's a well documented problem and once addressed with upgraded parts, the engine is very reliable.
@jamieh2304
@jamieh2304 Год назад
Had that issue with my A6 at 48000 miles. Replacement engine wasn't much better as it suffered from the other common issue with these - porous cylinder head. Avoid A and B suffix cylinder head numbers. C was best but still had a number of issues.
@himoverthere2120
@himoverthere2120 Год назад
@@jamieh2304 A6 was BLB and BRE. Early on, the replacement engines they fitted were the same as the failing ones. Lots of 04 and 05s send to the scrappers early. Any on the road now will be ok. The V6 TDI was a much better option in the A6
@jonathonwilliams93

Had this issue with my A4 2.0tdi BLB, cost me 240 and half a day and I caught it just in time. Also had some bad cam wear so had to buy a replacement head in the end. While I was doing the oil pump I took the crank out and did new crank bearings, front and rear main seal and a set of forged connecting rods and larger 2.7 tdi turbo Almost 2k later, its a reliable car. Although its now made 3 grand purchase a 5 grand one. Shane really cause everyone else I've known whose had one of these has been reliable

@limpet7r63 Год назад
Yep, ticking time bomb. Affects any of the north-south mounted 2.0 PDs (Passat, A4, Skoda Superb). It's basically shoddy engineering. VAG refused to acknowledge the problem for years, and then the "fix" they came up with was a bodge at best. To fix this properly you need to replace both the balance shaft and the hex drive. It's not just the hex key engagement that's the problem, it's also the fact that the shaft isn't properly centred on it, which accelerates wear. A lot of the VAG stuff around 2005-2010 was junk, with a load of engineered-in faults. Early TFSi engines were oil guzzling garbage, and the less said about the Multitronic CVT, the better. If you get 60,000 miles out of one of those, you're doing well.

I had the same model, but the saloon version. It had a radio\cassette (?!) player plus separate CD. It had done 130k when I traded it in (and only because the DPF & turbo had to be replaced and decided more things would eventually start to go wrong) for a Mk2 Audi TT. A fire extinguisher should always be where one can grab it from the driving seat as one exits the vehicle after releasing the bonnet, but don't open it, squirt the extinguisher through the gap. Split seconds count as one who had an engine bay fire on a Motorway at 60, luckily already in inside lane when the smoke was noticed. A couple of seconds more may have made the difference between a new loom and a bonnet and front wing respray compared to a total loss. A 1Kg is the minimum size one should have, a proper quality one not those cheap aerosol looking things. Like the extinguishers and fire blanket in one's home one hopes they are the purchases that are never used. I hope you have a couple in the barn.

Interesting that Matt compares this to an E46, when the E90 is the equivalent at the time (E46 was out of production in '06). Comparing my E46 with my brother-in-law's B7, I'd say the B7 has better build quality & refinement, but the BMW has it easily beat as a driving experience. Both (in some guises) run into reliability issues (oil pumps, vanos flaps, timing chains).
@denon7474
@denon7474 3 месяца назад
I would disagree. I owned an E46 and E91, and my friend has a B7. The quality is completely incomparable. Hard scratchy plastics abound the B7 interior, you get no footwell lights or vanity mirror lights on most models, unlike their German rivals; even the centre console (which is solid as a rock in the BMWs) creaks and moves around when you push it. The dashboard where your knee rests is horrible scratchy plastic. They also handle like they’ve got no front wheels, and have front wheel drive so traction is terrible in the wet. They’re really not very good cars compared to actually premium marques of BMW and Mercedes

Thinking man's alternative - that's an interesting one - the thinking man's car used to be Saab. Perhaps older Audi versus newer. Newer they seem to be company cars, lease agreements/contract hires etc. and the quick ones often seem to be the domain of (trying to be polite here and avoid cliché) those who lack consideration of other drivers. This particular car I think the thinking tag would apply - Audis of this age and mileage often owned and driven by the people who actually appreciate them and put in the work to keep them on the road, not always easy to fix and maintain (ties, auxbelts/cambelts, tensioners, bumper off jobs etc) but reward the effort. Yes astonishingly reliable however, when it does go wrong the replacement parts will cost you an arm and a leg. In fact so much that you will scrap the car. All German cars are very expensive on spare parts and always have been. Back in 1972 a replacement rear bumper for an Austin Mini cost £5. However, a replacement rear bumper for a VW Beetle was £50. Also back in those times Ford spares were far cheaper than German spares.
@CUTproductionsLtd
@CUTproductionsLtd Год назад
Not really true. OEM parts are cheap, if you shop around. VAG cars, which share so much, are so common throughout Europe and sold in such huge numbers, you're very grateful of it, if you have the rare incident driving there too (only time mine broke down in Spain it was 35 euros to fix - a small pipe) - try that with the Jags I once had. Whilst they're not worth much now and most anything you do will not add value, they can be very cheap to maintain. Discs all round for example on my almost identical A4 to this, were a 100 quid fitted and they are still good after 5 years. Servicing is cheap too at a good specialist.

The first, noisy with plastic interior despite leather seats and jumpy if not loaded, the second one, stiff as a bench with it's R-sport design and suspension. Neither optimal for our potatofieldlike roads. But they move when using the throttle and at least the 2.2 ton XC90 is leaner on the floating gold. :)

But my economy stops me from getting any Porsche despite those having many VW components. I usually drive mine until there is nothing to sell left.
