This truck had developed all sorts of drivability issues, from a clunk in reverse to gear grinding. Time to get to the bottom of it by tearing into its transfer case, a MP1222 (very similar to the electronic MP3023), and finding exactly what caused those problems. This episode mostly follows the disassembly, and in the next we will take a closer look at everything and get it all put back together!
And a special thank you to RU-vidr Gabi Panaite for permission to use their video for the demonstration of the reversing clunk! • 2007 2500hd transfer c...
Dates of filming: July 11th/20th/23rd, 2018 (Various parts of teardown and cleaning)

That basic idea can be really helpful for all kinds of weird things, did the same with two bolts against each other to spread the ears on the engine mounts in the S10 Blazer. Can sometimes use it to push off stuck brake rotors and separate hard to reach parts, too!

A bolt and a nut are just inclined planes. That's all it took to build the pyramids and are one of the oldest and most powerful machines ever harnessed by mankind. I wonder if an ancient Egyptian ever thought there'd be a guy 1/2 way around the world, 10-20k years later, teaching the same concept?

@@TheBrokenLife All it took to build the pyramids? 2,500,000+ blocks of hard granite from 5-25+ tons each in 20 years. Recheck your math. Quarry, shape, transport, final sizing and set. It would be easier to take the transfer case apart with nothing but your toes while blindfolded.

I replaced a differential on a 2005 Volvo VNL recently and that was toasted! There was so much metal that collected at the bottom that when I went to drain the oil nothing came out. All of that metal was obstructing the drain and I had to move the debris out of the way before the oil could drain... Your transfer case kinda reminded me of that.

I try to do a lot of research before doing some things, but there wasn't much information I could find on these transfer cases. Pretty much everything I did find was after taking it apart and some of it after the whole thing was back together! This particular case is a very simple design, so in this case winging it wasn't bad at all though. I really wanted to run that oil pump because I thought it was cool haha, didn't find much info on how to actually test them (besides taking out the fill plug while the engine was running and watching inside the case) so I figured it was worth a try on the bench.

My 2003 Trailblazer EXT LTZ experienced the same ABS issues that went away after I replaced both front unit bearings and my 99 Silverado Z-71 had the same transmission issues due to monstrous burnouts and dry hopping (alcohol was involved) actually ended up blowing the ring gear out of the rear end and had to completely rebuild all 3 (tranny, transfer case and rear end) but since I had just bought my 99 Firebird Formula 350 I sent it to my buddies shop and had him do it and my extended warranty actually covered it 😳 so it only cost me $500 and 4 brand new Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo’s so when the warranty came to inspect it they didn’t see the bald tires from said burnouts! And my god bud put some shoes on, I actually wear my steel toed Red Wings out in my shop especially w I am working with heavy shit, I like drinking while I am working on projects, DWW (drinking while working) and tend to drop things from time to time... lol and buy a parts washer, between the parts washer, 1/2” Milwaukee Red lithium impact and 2-post lift, working on any of my 10 vehicles became way easier and faster!

The whole "no axial load on radial bearings" is an oft-repeated myth. All bearing vendors publish a way to calculate axial load on their radial bearings and they're surprisingly strong. My experience is all with miniature bearings like 608 skate bearings and smaller, but I bet your mallet taps are nowhere near the max load rating of a giant bearing like these.

I would hope that the lesson here is when you hear a nasty clunk going into reverse time to STOP and figure out why. Continuing to drive will cause additional damage. Waiting for grinding and the truck coming to a complete stop was rather foolish. Stranded, towing and a completely destroyed transfer case is what that can get you. I say you got lucky.

It is the oil pump for the transfer case picking up oil from the container full of ATF on the workbench. Since the shaft is installed on the pump as it would be when assembled, the oil is flowing through the passages in the output shaft and out of the oiling holes along it.

The last day it was driven was February 10th, first test drive after these rebuilds was August 10th. So total downtime was exactly six months, or 181 days. Initial disassembly of the transmission was June 11th, so two months (60 days) until everything was back in the truck and ready to test. A fairly long time!

Great job on the videography and narration. One of the best I've seen on any subject. I would have tossed every single bearing myself. Then taken all the rest of innards to machine shop for tanking and then used ultrasound cleaner on them. Then bright light inspection with magnification. This is a lot of work to risk cutting any corners assuming you are not in middle of nowhere in Alaska or something. One tiny chunk of debris left in there and you could be doing this all over again. Those seals are ridiculous to get out, thinking there must be a special tool but it may not have been worth a squat either. Seems like mfg of seal could have made outer steel lip a larger diameter to ease removal some but probably never intended to be removed for average owner. Hope all was good after re-install and road test.

My 06 sierrra 1500 has been having that same seemingly random ABS issue as well. I had a abs line replaced and ever since then I've had that issue. Do you think it may be air in the module or to do with the transfer case? Keep up with the video's they're great!
@FuzzyDiceProjects
@FuzzyDiceProjects 5 лет назад
Since it's an 06, it has a different transfer case (the NP246 is probably the most common) and isn't nearly as likely to experience this issue. Could still check for it by removing the rear driveshaft and seeing how much play the output shaft has, or removing the speed sensor and seeing how much play the tone wheel has. If it is only ABS, no other symptoms, it could still be the speed sensor but since it only appeared after replacing a line air in the ABS system could do a few odd things if a bleed was not performed. If it is applying when not supposed to, though, more likely it is an electrical/computer related issue.

@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 5 лет назад
It would not be wise to clean the inside of anything with bearings still left in it with anything metal on a power tool, brass or not. Even the scotchbrite pads are a bit taboo for leaving their fibers behind. I offer another option is to use a wet sandpaper and keep it nice and wet with OIL and wipe down frequently. The oil will help contain the sand to just where you're working and wiping it down often should keep it from running to where you don't want it. Truth is that nothing is truly ideal in that circumstance except yanking the bearings, and I understand why he didn't.

The BW4405 in my friend's family's Exploder would beg to differ. The range engagement linkage got so wallered out (and not from use, it's not a wheeler) that it was slipping out of high range during deceleration. The truck wasn't worth crap so my friend and I deleted all the hi/lo shift mechanism and welded the SOB into high range. And then there's the 1356 transfer in the F150s where the pump retaining ridge in the case lets go and the whole pump spins around inside the housing instead of moving oil. And the "power transfer units" on their newer Exploders/Edges/etc. I'm not defending Chevy, though. My friend's S10 had a seal fail between the trans and transfer that allowed fluid to migrate from the trans into the transfer, and because the 4WD actuator for the front diff has a vacuum switch at the transfer case, it started sucking tranny fluid into the vacuum system. We caught it pretty quick, but If left long enough, the rubber vacuum actuators in the dash rot through and you end up with tranny fluid dripping into the ashtray. It takes real effort to create a failure mode that bizarre.

A comparable car to a 2007 chevy truck is a 2007 Ford truck. You’re talking about Explorers made in the 90’s that are 10 years older. Not really an apples to apples comparison.
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 5 лет назад
Truth is that no such thing as a perfect vehicle has ever been built. Every manufacturer has winners and losers and even within the same vehicle. A very basic example of what I'm talking about is the good old later generation push rod 5.0 Mustang. A roller 302 will tolerate insane amounts of abuse, as will the 8.8 rear in general, but the T5 transmission is essentially a box of glass in comparison. They don't even hold up behind 4 cylinders in S10s. A common design failure in GMs is no fuel pump access door so you have to drop the entire tank to do a pump. Mazda likes to route brake lines so they collect crap they can't drain out (if they reversed the mounting clips, that wouldn't happen). Ford uses the same wire harness plugs on multiple sensors, so you can plug the MAF plug into an injector if you want.* and on and on it goes... The best thing to do is buy a vehicle that you like. Then if it has quirks you have to deal with you still end up with the car you wanted at the end of the day. *These are all examples off of the top of my head and may not be universal or accurate across every vehicle of those builders.

You really can't compare the 07 Ford transfer case to the 07 Chevy transfer case. The Chevy transfer case is in its first year. The Ford transfer case already had 10 years of development. That's no apples to apples.
