2007 Jetta, 2.5 liter, HEADGASKET Removal and Install Tips and Clues.
This is a quick video without any actual work or process shown. I wanted to make a reveal video to help anyone see what they will uncover so as to appease any worry or doubt. I didn't see many videos or explanations about this engine, so I figure I would add to the information pool.
This is a 2007 Volkwagen Jetta, Wolfsburg Edition, 2.5 liter 5 cylinder engine, with Timing Chains, DOHC, Water pump is on passenger side Serpentine belt. I hope that helps designate between the various VW/Audi options out there.
I made note of the timing driven VACCUM PUMP on the engine. Apparently these often leak and cause common oil leaking over the bell-housing of transmission. You can see that part clearly in my video, as the only real connecting sprocket; lower engine to the upper engine.
Tool Note: Allen size 6 needed for intake removal. M14 spline socket needed for Cam gear removal. M8 Spine Socket needed for parts of the fuel rail bracket, and also to replace the oil filter housing (Which was one failed part on this car, which lead to ove rheating and thusly head gasket failure.)
Other notes on this make: radiator, sits on a plastic support frame. And if the driver bumps into, or rubs under the bumper or car even in the slightest, the radiator brace can crack. Or even the slightest bump inwards, can push the plastic electric fans against the intake etc, cracking them/breaking them, and leading to fragment to damage the radiator. Also the lower temp switch on the lower radiator hose quick connect is awfully close to the ground. So any debris that rubs the undercarriage can easily damage that electrical pig tail.
Applicable Engine ID codes: BGP, BGQ, BPR, BPS
2.5-litre, 110 kilowatts (150 PS; 148 hp) - 2005-2011 Volkswagen Rabbit (Golf Mk5), Volkswagen Jetta Mk5, Volkswagen New Beetle
ID code- CBT, CBU
2.5-litre, 125 kilowatts (170 PS; 168 hp) - 2007-2014 Volkswagen Beetle (A5), Volkswagen Golf Mk6, Volkswagen Jetta Mk5, Volkswagen Passat, 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit (Golf Mk5)
If you have any questions, feel free to ask or comment. I added all video clips, including end result of running vehicle. I added screenshots of torque sequence/Torque specs of head gasket bolts.
Car now goes 70mph without flinching and doesnt leak a drop of fluid! Success!!
Thanks.

If you remove the vacuum pump you can remove the entire chain and don’t need to worry about trying to sneak it around the pipe.

Pretty sure it doesn't matter where the chain is positioned as long as cylinder 1 is TDC and valve are all closed for combustion but you did a very good job runs good

Yes you are right, but if you remove the VVT sprocket, (The sprocket on the of the camshaft intake) There are four holes that allow oil passage and these must line up.) Although you do not have to remove that sprocket if you are just changing a head gasket. I would recommend what the video does above and only remove the sprocket of the camshaft exhaust. This sprocket is supposed to be "pre-loaded" (its adjustable, kind of like a tensioner) because the timing chain tensioner uses engine pressure) Make sure all the slack in the chain is where the timing chain tensioner is going to be putting tension on it.

When you remove the cylinder head, make sure you use RTV gasket maker on only the part where the timing chain area is. You'll see what I mean when you remove it.

Nice video. Very helpful. Can you provide more information on the specialty tools, like the socket for the head bolts and the clamp to hold the camshafts in place? Thanks.

@zacharyzooshorion 3 года назад
The headbolt socket is a long universal VW/Audi head star pattern. I'd have to go dig it up to be sure but it's like a 6 point star, so not like a standard torx... Just eBay search VW head bolt tool and you'll see. To hold down crank shaft I just aligned one of my Volvo tools. It wasn't that necessary. You could jam anything in there. The camshafts had pre drilled holes for a standard bolt. You'll see when you're in there. Out of dozens of engine designs I've worked through, this one wasn't actually very hard to work on. Cheers

For removing the intake you'll need a 6mm Allen on 1/4" inch drive. A 3/8" drive is to large of width to sneak through the holes on the intake. I still had issues and had to take the grinder to the 6mm 1/4" drive Allen socket to shave down some of the width, (then I had to use 10" inches of 1/4" extensions to reach those two pain in the ass bolts.
@zacharyzooshorion
@zacharyzooshorion Год назад
I used old volvo cam tools to hold cams etc. The long star socket is something you can find on eBay..its standard VW/Audi compat. The worst part was the long plastic holes in the intake, with alan head bolts. The rest was basic common puzzle tasks.

You have manual Service? Sorry I'm sorry my English is not good, I'm Latino, If you could share the service manual I would appreciate it, I want to replace the thermostat to my car, I have a 2007 rabbit with the same 2.5 engine I loved your video
@zacharyzooshorion
@zacharyzooshorion 4 года назад
I had the manual. Its not helpful tho. I'll just tell you. Thermostat is under intake manifold in front of engine. Inside a plastic housing tube. Watee pump is on left of thermostat housing on serpentine belt. But Thermostat is under intake manifold. You'll need Allen tools to remove intake manifold. And they are all easy to access except one, which you need a long extension with very thin Allen socket, or a simply a long Allen wrench. You'll of course need some other tools, like triple square spline socket to remove fuel rail bracket etc. But once you get intake manifold up and out, the thermostat housing is easily accessed. Hope that helps 👍😉

Did your car run hot with your blown head gasket? Also did you have a misfire on the cylinder that was leaking
@zacharyzooshorion
@zacharyzooshorion 4 года назад
Are you asking these questions, to try and figure out your own car's problems? Every head gasket failure is different my friend. In my case, I bought the car from a family whose teenage daughter ran it rugged. So I'm sure it over heated. It had so many broken parts. Radiator got banged, then some part of the oil filter housing, which has coolant channels, was busted, Coolant wasn't staying in upper engine. This one had the blown head gasket where back flow of exhaust gas was going into coolant system, (not oil mixed) so exhaust bubbled out expansion tank. Yes of course there was a misfire. But not all leaky heads have misfires. Most do tho. I resurfaced the head myself replaced all broken parts, put back together, and it ran perfect. These are tough engines. Rip it down and figure it out.

Car will run hot under oil filled cap will be covered in in a yellowish goo. Oil level will exceed max an it'll consume coolant

@@airingtonjesse6691 i have not tackled it yet...but looks like there is enough room to take it off from the head or worse case you can disconnect the the exhaust manifold from the exhaust pipe. Another concern I am having is timing chain. keeping the head gasket aligned while trying to get the chain in the head.
@Kaz73MGB
@Kaz73MGB 3 года назад
So the Haynes manual mentions using RTV for the portion around the timing chain. The replacement gasket has a black rubber seal. Do I still use the RTV? Seems strange.
@zacharyzooshorion

Extra RTV never hurt anyone. You decide. Even a small thin layer might make the difference once it's all torqued.

How did you remove the exhaust manifold cover... it’s such a tight space
@benjamineastman9950
@benjamineastman9950 2 года назад
You don't need to remove the exhaust manifold from the engine. Remove the muffler from the manifold, it's just 4 bolts and you can do it pretty easily from under the car. One of the bolts you may have to go from the top.

Why is your tailpipe still smoking was it a result of the blown headgasket or was it cold out ?
@zacharyzooshorion
@zacharyzooshorion 3 года назад
What do you think? The best way to diagnose a vehicle question is to think through how it all works. Generally a blown head gasket allows coolant into the cylinder head, and Into the exhaust system. Do you think that just goes away right away? Also a good reason to fix a car soon. If you let too much coolant burn into your exhaust it can head up and melt your catalyst and cause other problems. I've done head jobs, only to later find it needs a catalytic converter. This is a common combination of problems. In the case, this car ended up fine. But if you are really asking this question, I'd say, get out there and gain more experience. At 200k most cars have something coming out of the exhaust regardless 😉

@@zacharyzooshorion I see, I’ve had white smoke coming from my exhaust. I just hit 200k miles and I bought the car at 195k It always had white smoke I just thought it was from straight piping Also, I noticed I had a coolant leak a while ago. I just continue to put coolant like once a week. I don’t want to blow the head. Do I just fix the coolant leak? I was assuming it was just a hose. Or does replacing the head gasket fix that?

Supposedly this calls to seperate from transmission
@zacharyzooshorion
@zacharyzooshorion 4 года назад
Lol yeah well as you can see I didn't have to do any of that. You only have to separate transmission if you are doing the whole timing chain system.
@zacharyzooshorion
@zacharyzooshorion 3 года назад
Yeah that's why I made the video to show that you don't have to pull the whole trans. You would have to pull the trans to do the whole timing system tho. Obviously
@benjamineastman9950
@benjamineastman9950 2 года назад
Only if you are changing out the lower timing chain do you need to separate the transmission. Removal of the cylinder head only requires removing the upper timing chain. This uses two timing chains.

Service technicals say, head and head gasket can't be changed without doing timing chain. I prove that head can be chanheg without timing chain service! Thats what is here, that's what is shown. Thus saving several hours in the wheel well doing chain service. So, if you saw nothing; that would be representatuve of your own inability to see! As the case may be. Congratulations on projection of your own lazy mind. If you can't understand mechanics, leave it to those who can. Cheers.
