Great job RET, Ive searched far and wide for a handlebar tutorial for my 2009 bagger. you hit it on the head, now Im ready to knock it out. Great tip on non CVO enternal wiring, I ran out to the garage and low and behold,,,external wiring, that was good for a fist pump. Thanks again...Dave
Great and informative video! One suggestion I have is to test all the functions of the controls BEFORE re-mounting the handlebars to the tree, or at least before re-installing the plastics...just in case something is not right.

Hello Ret, thanks for the good video. Very well explained in details. I replaced the bars on my 2009 FLHX Street Glide. I didn’t take a photograph of it. But my throttle by wiring has an additional plug about 6 inches from the throttle control inside the handlebars. I followed your instructions and removed the wiring from the main plug. When I started pushing and pulling the wiring out there was a small plug like I said inside the handlebars. Had I known that, I would have just unplugged it and pulled it out the lower part of the handlebar opening and the bottom. Thank you again for the well explained video. All my additional wiring is outside the handlebars, I’m thinking, because my wiring is outside the bars is why there’s an additional plug for the Throttle. I think it would be too crowded with an additional plug. I replaced the bars with the OEM bars. Yeah I was hit broadside about a month ago in a gas station parking lot. It was all cosmetic. I’m ok, I did receive some battle scars. Bruised ribs, and a fractured vertebrae. I’m doing good. Thanks again.
Good information for wiring handlebars and anything else on the bike. Those pin / de-pin tools make the work much easier and they're affordable. Have a great day Ret!
Great video. Helped me a lot. Did my bars yesterday. 12” bars on a 2011 sg. Didn’t need to extend any wiring or cables. Had zero issues pulling the switch wires through but I’ll be damned if the TBW would go. Racked my brain for a little while and figured out a solution. A little bit of petroleum jelly where the pull wire and TBW wire are joined made it slip through with ease. Can’t believe I have never seen a comment about using some lube before.
Are you 12 bars this same style? Just curious because you said you didn't need new cables or wires for sg. I've got a 2012 is like to put 12's on as well.
The only problem I had was the throttle by wire plug re-pinning 3 wires lined up great the other 3 wires you could see the pin in the square but trying to push them through the wires would bend and would not pop up through the square.
You said the bike has the 10 inch mayham bars and you are going to install a new product, but I didn’t hear the name of the bars you are installing. I would like to put these bars on my 2013 Street glide, can you tell me the name of these bars and also do you sell the de-pinning tools?
Qwick question.. i ordered 14 inch bars, i have a 2009 street glide .. will the stock wires be long enough too run through the aftermarket bars? Like the throttle wires
Does the throttle by wire go through the original bars or just run alongside the bars? Sorry for the dumb question. I'm planning on adding 10" bars to mine. Tks , Dean.
Great video! Followed your procedure and everything worked out perfectly. I de-pinned the connectors per your instructions in the video however after doing so, I later found other sources saying not to remove the secondary lock. Instead, they say to pull until you here one click and use a de-pinning tool or a paper clip in the round hole above the pin to release it. Any thoughts on this? Also, would it be better to fully tape the control wires or put them in a sheathing a little less bulky than the original? Just wondering if the added protection is needed? Thanks.
Yeah everyone has their own ways. Not everyone has access to the correct depinning tool and a paper clip will work about 50% of the time. I don’t find it necessary to tape the whole harness or heat shrink it personally. I’ve done a bunch of these with zero issues down the road

This may seem like a "Silly"--even Ridiculous--question, but can the ignition switch be removed without a key? HD Touring Service Manual gives very little guidance. I've not done the 1000's of Handlebar jobs as y'all have, but I've never changed out bars without the Ignition Switch Key. Customer says he never had a key(s). REALLY?!? I have to throw the BS Card! Anyway...that's the challenge of an HD Indee!! Maybe y'all have a work-around! Short of telling the customer he's...out of luck until he gets a key!!
So Rhet! As I'm gettig into the OEM bars-4-Ape Hanger swap I'm haveing fun "Proofing" the HD MY Service Manual. Guess this is where just "Book Smarts" and EXPERIENCE diverge from that-on-hand Real World Experience. On my Throttly-by-wire harness I DO NOT have the luxury of a "Yellow-wrapped" trio of wires. It will be wrapped with yellow electrical tape when I'm done though! De-pinning is the ONLY way to go: I speak from experience. While the time at HD Factory Training focused on "Specific and Eaxcating Soldering" Techniques there really is no substitute to Slow, Deliberate and Methodical TTPs. [TTPs: that's Tactics, Techniques & Procedures to your non-Military patrons]. Take! Take! Take pictures of each wire-harness connection; and, take it from more than one angle. Moving on to the Bushings ("Rubber Mounts") at p. 2-91 2014 HD Touring Service [manual]--would really love it if you'd do a Instructional-video on this subject. The Service Manual is woefully inadequate. Not having access to PHDs and DTII the Indee is really left out in the cold! Guess that's the punnishment we Factory-trained Techs get for being Benedict Arnolds?!? You will need either a JIMS or Motion-Pro (PN 08-0139, 1-3/8" Socket to get at teh Upper Suspension Nuts (2 ea L/R); and, a 1-1/2" Socket and/or Wrench.
