2008 BMW 528i Engine Oil Filter Housing and Oil Cooler Gasket Replacement [3.0 N52 Engine]: This is complete, step by step instructions on how to remove and replace these gaskets on a BMW 3.0 N52 Engine. These gaskets are often the cause of oil leaks that can get oil on the drive belt, which if neglected can weaken the belt, which can break and in turn cause quite a bit of damage to your BMW engine. If your BMW has an oil leak, it's best to replace those gaskets now. In this demonstration, we show you how to replace the oil filter housing gasket and the oil cooler gasket on a 2008 BMW 528i 3.0, but the process will be very similar on any BMW with the N52 engine.

I lost a ton of antifreeze doing this job, key bit of info, keep oil cooler high on top of radiator when off or else antifreeze will spill out. 🤔

Yes indeed. That's why I suck out some of the coolant first at 2:32 in the video.

Great video! My gasket was hard as a rock. Doing this a second time on my car - this time with BMW gaskets. I don't want to do it again.

Aren't the BMW gaskets the one that fail in the first place?

The new OE Japanese made gaskets are supposed to be a lot better. I have some waiting to go on right now.

Thank you... Getting ready for front bearing replacement on Mom's but finding oil resin around... Up in crevass in the aluminum front of the oil filter.... Another mech.tech on RU-vid sharing diagnostics referred to the oil filter housing gasket.... So I am getting Monday ready for that also... Plastic burn smell when starting car and a few minutes going...

Will the oil cooler gasket failing cause oil to get into the coolant?
@MechanicSecrets

On this model, it is possible but not likely. More likely to be the engine oil cooler itself that is bad. You can pressure test the oil cooler in a 5 gallon bucket. Remove the cooler from car and drain all fluids. Use brake clean or parts cleaner and compressed air to clear passages (oil and coolant). Fill the 5 gallon bucket with water. Block off one side of the coolant part of the cooler and use shop air with a blow gun and lightly apply air into the other coolant passage. Put the cooler completely under water while you are charging it with air. Any bubbles seen coming from oil passages means the cooler is bad and leaking. If the cooler is not leaking and you plan on re-installing it back on the engine, drain all water from it and dry it with compressed air.

Hi mate I have a bmw 330i 2006 that has a creamy coolant, very thick creamy. How ever no coolant in engine oil or transmission oil. Would you think its mixing because of the oil filter housing gasket? Are they common to have that issue

It's possible but more likely the oil cooler itself or radiator, if the trans lines go through the radiator. You can pressure test the trans and engine oil cooler to be sure.

Isnt this the n53? The n52 has a different silver engine cover. My e92 n53 had the exact same as in the video
