I have a 2009 Nissan Altima that leak a bunch of fluid after hitting a bump. Drop the pan, change filters, new gasket, new cvt fluid and an aftermarket inline cooler. The car drove fine for a week and suddenly did not change the pulley ratio, I know there are no gears, but it's like if was stuck in first gear. Engine revs up and all the shifts works, but can't make it pass 20mph. I have the feeling that might be the stepper motor but check engine light is off and the scanner show no codes. Sorry for the long post. Hope you can help me.
Hello there,I really enjoy an appreciate videos like yours. My 2012 nissan rogue slows down after driving for about an hour. I have not yet seen any codes. Will step motor replacement correct problem? Thanks again for the video
Darwin Escobar thank you Darwin, when you say slows down it hesitates or surges? Or does the tranny just seem to drag? Typically the stepper motors go bad on the valve body on those cvt. How many miles are on it
Hi I have a 2009 Altima 3.5 coupe with about 160k miles on it. Lately I been feeling lack of acceleration and at time when I’m accelerating from a red light or turning I have zero acceleration for about 15-20 seconds. I have been seeing people mention it’s the step motor. Do you think the step motor would be causing this? Thank you in advance
Alonzo Gomez let me first ask did you buy car new or used? If used at what mileage? Have you ever had the transmission oil changed? It could be the tranny slipping. Let me know the answers and I can help more
Hey man, I have a 2010 Altima and I have a code P1777 popping up. I did this a year ago and swapped the stepper motor, now Im back to the same situation. Swapped the stepper motor again but this time did not fix my issue. Is it time for a new trans? Its at about 170k car has never had any issues whatsoever until this.
hey, you said you had the same issue after replacing the step motor a second time. did it come with the code again too? and what type of issues were you having? did you ever get it fixed?
Your voice sounds like Toreto’s voice. Today I drove my 08 Altima and the transmission felt bit weird, 6th gear won’t goes on and the engine doesn’t goes above 2000 RPM. I heard a whining sound coming out the transmission as well. I’ll do this: 1. scanning for codes. 2 if the codes 1777, 0845, 1778 or so. Then replace stepper motor if required, change Cvt oil and filter. Hopefully it will work. Do you agree???
Abi I got them from the dealership really cheap. The outside filter was $18 the inside was $22 I think and the gasket I got on eBay. I just did a tranny swap on a maxima and had autozone look up a 2010 and matched it up.
Good video.. but i have a question does code p1777 a transmission problem? Because i change the step motor and still getting p1777 ...this happen after i had a lithium 13v battery in my engine bay and cause the car to stall with a burn out megative battery sensor ,so i was wondering if the TCM damage..help brother car dwn 3months nw
@welding junkie. Thanks for the video but my Nissa 08 came up w that code bit what's bad is that mine dont go pass 40 mph even when I floor the throttle. I thought it was a tps ish but I had the AutoZone guy look at it and he said it was a stepper motor ish. Did you have the same problem moving the car. Cos it looks like mine is stuck on gear 1
Chaoschillin Not worth it. Just get the transmission swapped Too complex. I entered swapping the transmission after all the hassle then later on sold it cos I was mad at it
My car having the same issue they're telling me is the transmission but this code pops up, should i change the stepper motor or new transmission? Thanks
Te contesto por el..el dice quees una transmission cvt..y como mehanico que soy te digo que una transmission regular y una cvt son completamente diferentes sus partes no son compatibles...
Emanuel Chacon the 2.5 has the stepper on the top of valve body. Similar but you’ll need to take valve body out it’s easy to do. Then swap the stepper and reverse install
Justin Mitchell yes it did no issues now. Just a few things. Use same oil you drained if it’s never been changed. If it has get new Nissan oil. Second make sure you have no leaks when you are done don’t hulk down the bolts. If your oil gets low you’ll exhibit the same complaint. The 4 cal you have to take whole valve body out as the stepper is on top. Fairy easy job. I used the old oil and old gasket until I New it worked then changed oil and gasket so no waste
You got it man anytime. If you need help let me know. if you are buying new oil get this here its ns2 required for you car. its $20 a qt from Nissan dealership www.amazon.com/Genuine-Nissan-Transmission-999MP-NS200P-Quarts/dp/B074MC8GS7/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1543179981&sr=8-1&keywords=nissan+cvt+oil+nissan+altima
So my 2010 Sentra reva up to 5000 ok first gear and sometimes doesn’t shift to second, but when the car is cold it shifts normal up to 60 mph then won’t go fast, and when coming to complete stop then it stays on first gear and won’t change, what’s the problem?
Hey Welding Junkie, thanks for the video. I have a code P1778 on my 2008 Nissan Altima 2.5 s. I took the transmission pan off and couldn't see the stepper motor. Do I need to remove the whole valve body?
Ammon Rivera hi yes on the 2.5 the stepper is on top. It’s very easy just 8 bolts or so and if comes down. When you put it back up make sure gear fork lines up with shifter
Hi senor, I have a 2007 altima 2.5 154k miles. No codes. I just put a new wheel bearing. The car when I put on drive don’t run. I accelerate and the car run. I soon I release the gas the car stop. Also make a noise. Like something is hitting by the engine. Can be the step motor?? Any advise. I really appreciate your answer.
1joseda so that noise wasn’t there until you worked on it? Sounds like something hitting the axle or paw on backwards maybe? Def doesn’t sound like a stepper to me. If it’s stopping by itself when you let off gas it’s prob axle or brake issue
Welding Junkie, thank. Definitely no was the sound before. FYI I put the car up ( using towers ) turn on and drive, the side where I replace the wheel bearing spin normal. But the drivers side was like something is stopping like break. Mean has two different speed spins.
Hey, I have a 2008 altima 2.5, and it delays to accelerate from a stop then goes back to normal while driving. Only code is a too lean code. Could this still be because of the step motor?
Joel Lown i would check your fluid level first but yes the stepper could cause the same symptoms. Make sure you check it while it’s running and hot. The 2.5 the stepper is on the bottom much easier job too.
I hope you can help me out - I replaced the stepper motor in an 08 Altima Coupe 2.5S TWICE. I still get the same code when i do the job i disconnect the battery and ive tried erasing the code, but it still comes on. I also bought my stepper motor from Amazon. Any ideas what the deal is? Ive tried 2 different and "New condition" Stepper motors with no avail
Pavley G which code are you getting the stepper motor code? Are you making sure the linkage is in the transmission when you reinstall the stepper motor? It’s the fork looking part and it goes into the transmission. If that’s not connecting the stepper motor won’t move the fork. After I fixed this the pressure blew a week later I had to install a new transmission and it wasn’t that difficult cost $650
It was 1778. And I did make sure the connection was on there well. I was starting to think maybe it was an electrical issue- but it has its code if it’s electrical (1777, which I don’t have) Where did you find the transmission for that price? And what equipment did you use to change it out? Thank you for your reply!
Pavley G I found it at my local yard the 3.5 might be cheaper than the 2.4 I just dropped the subframe and removed both left and right motor mount and tranny mount, I left the rack tied up and the sub frame dropped down with two jacks the rest were hand tools it’s really not that hard of a job I feel you could do it. It’s just time consuming but the car is up and running like new now I’m glad I did it. Only use ns2 cvt fluid. I had 1778 and 1777 codes. You can check the wires if you have a lab scope to confirm or do a ohm reading you’ll know. Are you getting no movement or slippage ?
@@weldingjunkie The car is really weird.. I just replaced both speed sensors. What happened was it drove ALOT better, but sometimes it would not respond to me pressing the gas. So i would release and press again and then it would accelerate. Even when it does that, i could floor it but it doesnt accelerate past a certain point. This was best case. i let it sit again, and wehn i drove it, if i got it in 2nd or third gear, it drove great. But if i slow down or stop, it completely messes up and wont move. Especially if im going up a small slope
Pavley G I know Excactly what you mean , how many miles are on it? This one has 250k but that’s not the norm for these. The one I put in has 120k they only last 150-175k I have a feeling that it’s the tranny itself it’s belt driven but the plates wear out so it won’t shift correctly. I bought a step motor off eBay first and it didn’t fix it. Did you buy the one for the 2.4?
Thanks for the video brother. Can a misfire 1 p0301 code cause my trans cvt 08 altima 2.5l not to engage in any gear?? I can shift it but its only in nuetral. It just rolls ina all gears?? Needing some help bad.
Hi Could you please tell us what was the issue cause i am having the same fault code along with P0774 my issue is the car doesn’t shift it is stuck in the first gear Thanks
Mostafa.H. Rajab hello it was the stepper motor in the valve body that lasted a few weeks, do not change tranny oil until problem is fixed. I had to replace the tranny two weeks later due to pressure issues
Avery Williams depends what you are doing if just getting to the valve body yes, if you have high mikes filter than oil and put it back in. There is a risk in putting new oil in a unserviceviced cvt.
@@weldingjunkie so glad you responded so quickly...tell me something... I will try to press my pedal all the way in and o don't get a response from my engine then when I do my car moves but the rpms go up but my car doesn't shift. Then sometimes it shudders whenever it's slowing down. Last year summer I heard whining noises and when I start it up now and give it gas I hear a high pitch whining noise too. The main problem left tho is the shuddering when my car is slowing down. Or moving slowly. I replace the torque mount. Please please any advice
Please tell me you don't own that piece of shit? The only decent altimas were from the mid 90's. Been all downhill since then. Don't get me started on that joke of a transmission.
worldtraveler no it is a POS it’s my 20 year old daughters car. That CVT elastic band transmission is junk that’s why I had to make this video no decent ones out there on this. And I hear this is a common problem the step motor has a high fail rate with no recalls. I drive a BMW 328 D diesel I love it. 40mpg
My buddy had one of those. He drove that thing 1000miles a week. Good cars. My daily beater is a 97 altima. I've got 245k on it and only just dropped in a cheap used tranny. It's still on it's original starter. I'll drive that thing into the ground. The air is cold and thats all I care about. It lives outside, gets abandoned at airports for weeks on end and gets washed when it rains. Pretty bad when I spend more cash on tools than I do my car.
worldtraveler haha I know the feeling I spend too much on tools that’s for sure especially welders. We have a truck like that. Believe it or not that 08 Altima has. 265,000 miles on it so I can’t really complain too much about a step motor but what a pain. You have to use cvt oil what a set up for Nissan to screw You
I had same codes put a step moter in push the gas pedal it would go all the way to the floor and then I'd only be able to go about 20 miles an hour so I ordered a valve body but that in doing the same thing 20 miles an hour gas pedal all the way to the floor everybody says that I have to take it to Nissan to get it reprogrammed if you got any comments on that that would be great
Pat Jarozewski hi Pat if you didn’t do a CVT reset you’ll need to because your computer needs to relearn however you can buy a scanner and do it yourself it’s simple. Sounds to me like something else is going on tho. Are the rpms just climbing to 5k rpm or will it shift into second? Here is the link to a cheaper scanner to reset the cvt buy it reset it and if it works great, if it doesn’t send the tool back to amazon. How can I tell if my cvt is slipping. I have a theory that my step motor is bad but my car also shudders just when im trying to give it gas and it doesn't respond
And where the hell is your affiliate link? If you are going to help them sell parts and show how to change it, at least you should make a couple bucks off your trouble?
Are all the filter bolts the same length... No. 14 long one short bolt? And Yes... the fluid color is BAD! 250K she should have trade it in already! Probably 70 inch pounds of torque on those bolts!
Retired Person no there are 3 sizes in that valve body. Small - med- long the filter has med and long and mostly long. The valve body has 3 short. It’s in the service info on all data I use pro demand I pay $150 a mo. Yes the fluid is dark it was prob never changed. She just bought it that way used for $1500 for the car not worth trading it in she’s 17 years old and first car. Torque spec on the bolts is 66 inch pounds that’s what I put on them when I finished.
@@weldingjunkie Thanks! I wasn't expecting an answer on New Years Eve LOL but thanks -- you did a great video BTW! My 2010 Altima 2.5S has 102K and I am going to change the fluid next week. I have not had any CVT codes, I have an OBDII (bluetooth) and the Andriod App CVTz50. Going to change the fluid and the (2) filters (yes I know about the paper filter cartridge at the heat exchanger housing aka warmer/cooler) Plus I am installing the Nissan OE trans oil cooler service kit at the same time. Trying to make this one last as long as I can. At 70 + years old and on limited income, I can't afford a newer vehicle.
Retired Person you’re welcome :) yes most people don’t know to change the transmission AT filter outside the tranny. The one on this 3.5 isn’t serviceable but at $17 dealer cost can’t really complain. I think it’s more important than the one on the valve body as hers was clogged after I changed the stepper her pressure Solinoid A primary is stuck open. I have to drop pan again and change the pressure switch. I don’t blame you it’s her first car but same thing she can’t afford another. My older daughter has a 04 Camry with a rod knock driving around with no oil so I’ll be filming a motor replacement soon. I always tell them how important maintainence is. You should fly through yours. Glad to see you are still able to do your own stuff...don’t forget you need ns2 cvt oil only Happy new year!!
@@weldingjunkie Thank you again and Happy New Years! Yes I am blessed to still be able to do my own work! I have done a ton of things in my life and I tell people >>>> "I can fix anything... Except a woman!" LOL "That's because women are complicated!" For my fluid change, I have both filters, a new pan gasket, (I plan to drop the pan and check it over and clean it and the magnet(s)) I will install a new metal mesh filter in the pan while I have it down. Yes, I have 12 qts of Nissan OE NS-2 fluid. I am going to use a pump and be removing fluid via the dipstick, then replacing what is removed, starting the engine, and put the shift lever from Park to Reverse, N and D (holding in each mode for a few [5-7] seconds) then shut off the motor, suck out the pan fuid and repeat until I see the fluid as clean as the new fluid going in. Once I have clean fluid, I will r&r the paper filter and install the new trans oil cooler then check the fluid is at the proper level and take it for a drive and recheck the level. Any steps you would change? Thanks again!
