2009: Bickering or Banter? Harry and William Exchange Jibes in Remarkable Interview 

They're either extremely good actors, or just typical brothers who love each other but express it as banter. I have sons, this kind of banter is normal behaviour for brothers.

This is British Humour ....banter. Only people who love each other can jab back and forth.

William jumped to Harry’s defence at 5:58 when the reporter asked H if he felt pressure to be as good as W. U can tell he was very protective of H

Normal brother banter. I noticed William was very proud of Harry’s achievements. Encouraging.

These are the brothers we remember. So sad that it all changed. Great banter.

Even , we Irish, who do not pay much attention the British Monarchy cannot help feeling sad for these two brothers given what they went through growing up and seeing how they clearly loved each other.

Watching them together like this makes it seem even sadder now that there is such a rift between them.

Harry seemed happy at this point in his life! And the brothers seemed so close. It's truly sad how things have turned out.

Look how William talked him up towards the end. Seems like a very good brother to me. It’s obvious from this interview who looks out for who.

That's normal British back and forth. Very mild compared to how working class best friends would talk to each other down the pub.

Normal sibling banter. William made Harry comfortable by saying he was coping well and better than him.

This is hilarious. William is taking the mickey out of harry over and over - i.e. teasing and calling out his b.s. They seem like normal brothers.

Speaking as a military person this is obvious banter. William was RAF and Harry was in the Army Air corps. The Army and RAF always have that brilliant banter. I served out in Afghanistan with Harry and he ended up as an Apache pilot. He ended up as a gunner- In the Apache, because he wasn't the best pilot, but he was and still is an amazing guy. William and Harry are both wonderful royals and the only two that I've ever liked. I found it funny about the comment about William being bald, because when I met William when I was doing my ground crew training I made a comment about his hair and he loved the banter! I hope the brothers can get on good terms in the future.

This seems so much sweeter than the way Harry described it in Spare. Sigh.

They were such happy brothers. I still hope one day they reconcile.

They both did their share of banter, but William complimented him a couple of times. Harry didn't, except to say that William was smarter. It seems like the criticism went both ways.

Harry was so confident back then. Every time I see a video of him these days he looks very solemn and he speaks very hesitantly.

Gone are the good old brotherly days. I admire how Prince William took his brother under his caring wings.

Ok media, stop adding bs. This was a humorous back & forth, when it aired decades ago. They were (are), two brothers, each a Royal Prince, having a fun go @ each other. Typical siblings behavior. Royal or not.

They both love to joke at each other, and had love for each other too. How Harry said William is smarter than him, and William rolled his eyes because he doesn't think so. And how William said Harry is modest when William knows that Harry worked hard. Wish Harry will think about what he's doing and apologize for being so jealous of William and support him as a good brother instead.

This made me smile and then quite sad 😔 they are clearly brothers who care about the other, normal banter and both came across really well. Strangely, I see William as he is today, but Harry, something changed between these formative years and now. In my perfect world, the boys wld be forced to spend a long weekend together (no one else) with the first day watching reruns of film like this together.

The way William pat his back at 3:45 he is so supportive.. staying silent and listening to Harry carefully. The nasty H&M fans posted only a small part on Twt and made it look bad on william for talking and not letting Harry speak. But in whole interview he is so supportive of Harry

I always thought this banter was backed by love and affection . When did Harry get serious about sibling rivalry? Who is pouring vitriol in his ear?

I miss the days when they were close and got along.

They were so adorable together!!! Harry looked MUCH happier back then too.

You can see William's maturity, he spoke eloquently and you could see his love for Harry

Very sad that Harry sold his only brother, This is a betrayal that is really hard to digest, when trust is gone it is very hard or even sometimes never to get them back again.

There’s obviously tension. I think they have a complicated relationship, like all siblings do. But there’s a lot of nuance of course. I don’t think it’s fair to paint one as some sort of villain and the other a some sort of martyr. I don’t think only one of them was instigating the rivalry (as harry wants the world to believe). I feel like they both were taking jabs at one another here in a way that seems like banter, but I can feel the tension under the surface, lol. Harry said in the book that he was upset that William mentioned the snoring and stuff, but he was constantly joking about how he’s better than William or about how being in the army is superior than being in the RAF, so it definitely goes both ways. I feel that in the same way that Harry grew up with a lot of complex emotions about the idea of being the “spare”, William also had a lot to deal with when it comes to understanding his role as the heir. And while I believe that there’s a lot that can be said about William (he’s probably stubborn, maybe overly critical at times, has insecurities as well, and probably has a terrible temper), I feel like Harry is too focused on his insecurities to take into consideration that William too has to deal with a lot of pressure. Harry casts aspersions, makes negative assumptions, and self-pities a lot. I can’t blame him though because it probably stems from his trauma. Although I felt that there were times in this interview when William got annoyed, I can also feel that he does care about his brother. As I said, there’s a lot of complexity and nuance.

Now that is what you call good old fashioned banter which is absolutely delightful. This is what Britain has lost and its so sad. No malice just pure funny banter.

It sounded to me that he said, “boldness.” It was the interviewer who challenged it to “baldness.” He showed confusion in misunderstanding.

In his book Harry speaks about this exchange and criticises William. How sad and petty. This is a perfectly normal conversation and William appears very fond of Harry and complimentary to him. How different Harry is now! Really sad. 😢

Very heartbreaking watching this - they just seem like regular brothers. Yes, they tease each other, but they have each other’s backs as well (especially William, who sticks up for Harry quite a bit).

As a mother of two sons that love and very close to each other much like these two brothers used to be. It will break my heart if they let a no good wench get in between the two of them.

I have 4 brothers. If brothers aren't talking smack about each other, they don't like each other. You're supposed talk smack to your brothers face, and say nice things about them behind their back.

Nice to see the way they were. Obviously a close bond. Only advice I can give to Harry is when you find love with a partner that person should bring the best out of you. I will leave it there.

The Dynamics changed between them I bet as they grew older. We know what Harry felt like as a spare, imagine how William feels as Future King? Queen Elizabeth put duty first. I can't imagine having to put duty first before all else. Can you? And wonder why the monarchy must be protected? I called Harry did betrayal. We're not supposed to judge, I choose to pray for them both. Both are good people who've been affected by being born into something. Look at the American children who have inherited wealth, many did not handle it well they couldn't establish their own identity easily. Yeah I'll choose to pray for them both.
