Absolutely right, Johnny is a master of his craft, I will say this as a guitarist. And those who criticize him are simple stupid people. Slackers and mediocre people.
SICK tone and playing..tremendous energy. I love the way they play this classic song here..spectacular. Can't stop watching/listening to it. Everytime I do watch/listen to it, I feel like tossin' my six guitars out the winda!
nick robinson Including Duane Allman ?? Little Feats' Lowell George? I know you're the greatest who ever lived. Careful with those sweeping generalizations, though !
John ______ Hey, no need to get smart. Do some serious comparison sometime and you'll see that his guitar prowess is something they would have aspired to. I'd pass him up in a second to see those guys if they were still around because they were original and did some fine writing. Johnny is a mechanic but of the best caliber. Btw it's "Feat not feet". So long.
Guthrie Govan, maybe? I heard him play always comfortably jazz, rock, metal, country (listen to the video where he mimics the winners of a guitar magazine poll...). anyway I love Johnny
More versatile? The guy does jazz, bluegrass, chicken pickin' country (probably the best in the world at that), and Van Halen licks Eddie would be envious of. Les Paul thought he was good enought to have him come to the Atrium in NYC when he was alive to trade some jazz licks...
Wow! I love your comment, this just made my whole night and possibly the next few nights as well. Glad to see someone feeling as passionate about Johnny Hiland, I'm in love with this guys style already.
ILikeZappa On behalf of the American delegation, I would like to inform you that your request is now under official consideration. Be advised, your chances will greatly improve once you repatriate Mr. Morgan permanently.
Example of the progression of guitar music! His assimilation of all genres and ability to have fun with an inexhaustible arsenal of licks is amazing to watch. When people compare players from the past, while great and seemingly groundbreaking, watch how it looked like work for them while the advanced players like Johnny and so many others these days make it look so effortless! I'm in awe.
I've listened to these Johnny hiland videos many times and still think the tone from his PRS guitar sounds better than his Music Man guitars. Johnny, you are an awesome player! Keep on pickin' for a long time to come.
Everytime I see Johnny I think of a guy who got dealt a crappy hand and he plays that hand with every little bit of the ferocity he can muster. Fuck I love him!
Thanks jr I have been a huge Danny Gatton fan since 2002 but I have many favorites besides Danny like Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher buddy Whittington, buddy guy bb king Scotty Anderson Lenny bruea Roy bucanan jr brown Derek trucks srv even tommy bolin too! I think johnny hiland is going to be a new favorite he's fantastic! You can hear a lot of Gatton influence in his playing and Danny Gatton will probably always be my favorite and so many more I am forgetting !
First time I saw Johnny was at the 2007 NAMM Show in L.A. He was keeping everyone entertained in the foyer before they opened the doors to the big hall. OMG! He was playing The Breeze and just killin it. I could see the look on those California boys who thought they were the Kings of R&R. Johnny kicked their California ass!
"lame ..."? Speaking from experience we pickers are constantly raising the bar and that's why there are so many fantastic young players out there - Johnny Hiland is a stellar example of someone who sets the bar for all others to follow, and just like Gaines, King, Rossington, and Collins did way back 40 some years ago. The Skynard pickers were hardly average players by early seventies standards. I love Johnny's adaptations of Gattons hybrid picking. Clear as a bell!
Well said. It always amuses me when some people say there will never be another guitarist as good as Jimi Hendrix, completely ignoring the fact that guitarists today have had 45 years to follow his example and raise the bar he set.
It is Jimi's innovative aspects that keep him on the elevated perch.Put Jeff Beck in that category.Sounds that people had never heard out of an electric guitar were introduced by those two in the late 60's.
And I am blessed enough to own one. He is a true talent. Got to see this show too. My Hiland PRS is prob the nicest playing PRS I've ever owned. Especially rare now since he left PRS.
My Friend just sent me a post from Johnny Hiland! Where the FK has he been! HOLY SHITTTTT! NEW FOUND FAITH! Never lost it but Reinvigorated!!!!!!!So Happy!!!!!!!!!
Roy was one of the truly quintessential. Almost philosophical true bluesmen that was a. Lesser known in the public but anyone who was a. Real. All time great. That Buchanan had a sense for the. Common chord. But musically he was right on the top shelf of landmark. Players. We all have come to know so well He was a trend setter. An innovator. And advocate for young pickers. All hats off before so great and. Sullen a man he was We must bear the burden of our respective crosses. But. As absolutely transcendent and majestic. His playing was a. Place high upon the rising winds with the spirit birds. And that Segway to a panoramic opening up to the horizon of the plains and. Mountain. . Where it and the sky meets Roy is one for the history books
@bettset-You can see a few videos here on RU-vid where he plays with others, even little kids. I love this man, he is a good, decent human being who just wants to be happy and make people happy with music. Stevie Ray was taken from us, but God gave us Johnny so we could keep the house rockin'! I would have loved to see Stevie and Johnny play together, talk about Johnny playing with others! :)
Vito. Yes it's a Johnny Hiland PRS they are amazing guitars. I bought one when I met Johnny at this show and ended up getting another. Love them JH is a beast!!!
What I love about Johhny is ...he makes it look effortless..he really does...can you imagine being able to play like this? This is a gift from God...he must have done something right in his past life! LOL!
Imagine how very scary he would be if all those chickens broke out of his hen house eatin' corn and tatter's with a whole big can of whoop ass harmonics bouncing off a whammy! God he's good. I love his version of Mercury Blues too.
this guy guitar playing is fantastic, i wish there was a second guitar player right up there on stage playing ALONG with him. Two guitar players (Stradlin & Slash, Richards & Wood, Young & Young, Moore & Gorham, etc) that play off of each other can be magical in a way that one guitar player can never be, even if his name is hendrix.
@fenstratful Oh yeah, lol...I play steel resonator with a slide, lap steel, acoustic, and rebuilt an Ibanez RG50. with american electronics and a Dean Markley and a Humbucker.....and also machined a new pick guard ....and painted it neon yellow like the rest of the guitar..then covered the whole thing with black stripes and black dots, lol lol...it's got that maple Wizard Neck, and I did a fret job on it! ...you and I both appreciate how good Johnny really is....
One thing that sets Johnny apart is all those days he sat in his room and played that " unfashionable " instrument...The banjo. Well Johnny, you had the last laugh son and you're knocking them all like ninepins. Shit hot ! and right up there with the very best...G...
God bless my brothers hands.. Go Johnny Go... you may be my long lost brother , we certainly weigh the same, :) Good going Johnny spread the joy brother.. warmest regards Awesome John
Some of you guys are pretty rough on Hiland. He has talent in spades and even if you don't like his style, chances are he'll play circles around anyone that bothers to comment on this site! We're typing...he's playing!
@rockinredneck57 he is amazing. some guys with his talent cannot play with others. my bet is he could because he's having so much fun. it looks so effortless. my hope is he does get more recognition. like i said--he is somewhere else. amazing
Is there any style of playing that Johnny hasn't mastered? I think he covers them all in this song! he rocks, he chicken picks, he shreds, he taps. He's an awesome player! Truly has no equal, in my opinion. I don't care what he looks like, he's got the goods! Now, for his own health, I'd like to see him shed some weight, cause I'd like to have him around playing for years to come!
