2009 Hyundai Genesis Sedan. After entering the U.S. market with an inexpensive subcompact car more than 20 years ago, Hyundai has continued a climb upscale. I'm impressed with how Hyundai built the Genesis. The Entire Hyundai brand evolved drastically trough the years and I can say that they are now a competitive brand not only to the domestic brands but also in other german and japanese brands such as acura, lexus, mercedes benz etc. I love the Genesis but the only problem is the brand itself.

When you've done your research you can say I've got it all wrong, but once you do I don't think you will. I've been looking into BMW for a long time for it's luxury factor, but this Hyundai brings that factor without its price. Thank You

My family have 4 Hyundais between us not a single problem in 5 years on any of them. I am definitely upgrading to this, if its reliable and cheaper why not!

At the end of 2008, I bought a Genesis exactly like the review sample: 3.8 Tech with navigation, in silver. I traded in a BMW 3-series. Nearly 11 years later nearing the end of 2019: I'm still driving it. Nearly 280,000 miles on the odometer, including road trips to the Canadian Rockies and across the entire US. Only one major fault during those years, and it had more to do with me abusing the car than with the car's flaws. I definitely don't miss the BMW, except for the bragging rights. I'd love to get myself a new Genesis G70 or a Hyundai Ioniq, but I'm keeping my old Genesis until it's a museum piece.

@aztekkthundergod It had to do with the variable valve timing, and it malfunctioned at 240,000 miles or so, leading the left half of the engine to misfire. The reason was that I had been doing a lot of commercial stop-and-go city driving that led to the VVT solenoid getting gunked up. I no longer use my Genesis in such severe duty anymore. Oil changes are your best prevention - even with synthetic, I would stick to 3,000 miles or 3 months in case of severe use. (My current interval now is 3 months regardless of mileage, and I almost never go past 5,000 miles)

My mother might get the 2010, with 10,500 km for 33K. Honestly, Im not all crazy about the brand name but unless ur insecure about ur social economical status, this is a great buy! More money for her vacation clothes and other events! She'll still drive in comfort! We going to check it out Thursday along with a ES and A4.

Thanks, that other guy was starting to piss me off. Anyway, I took a look at the Malibu and I have one thing to say: impressive. It looks good inside and out but I have not heard much on initial quality ratings or reliability yet because I'm still looking up the new 2011 Sonata. BTW your comment has cut short but I'm guessing you were going to say that the Hyundai badge isn't the best thing for the Genesis. I don't know about you, but I think of Hyundai the same way I think of Honda/Toyota

I learned drive in a 1997 Toyota Corolla. Today I drive an 09' Sonata that I got recently. (which is why I'm at the Hyundai vids) The Sonata is a great car. I test drove the Mazda6, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord and I liked the Sonata the best. BTW you need air conditioning in the WINTER?! I live in Montreal, Canada and every winter I thank god for the seat warmers!

I've driven this car just for giggles (i have an 07 sonata). It was awesome. very nice car. it's a close competitor to the lexus or bmw. since i bought my sonata, i've become a fan of hyundai. and when i decide to get a new car, i will get another hyundai, genesis would be nice but i'm fond of the sonata, but who knows. i just may get this one.

I definitely like the Lexus, too. I've driven both an 2008 LS460 and an 2009 Genesis 4.6. I prefer the Mark Levinson audio system in the Lexus -- to the Lexicon in the Genesis (a personal preference). Both they are close. I think the Genesis has a nicer instrument cluster (round radio cluster / nav screen)... Where the squared off Lexus looks stodgy and old. While the Lexus GS (sporty) is closer in price / the Genesis is tuned like an LS (traditional).

Genesis 4.6 MSRP: $37,250 Lexus LS 460 MSRP: $63,825 The Genesis was benchmarked against the LS during its engineering -- which is why they are similar in virtually every option / spec. The Hyundai has nearly the same equipment for nearly $20k less. THE EPA (THE GOVERNMENT) classifies them IN THE SAME CLASS.

I was kinda iffy about rear looks of this car, but when I saw it in person, damn it looked nice.. Front is nice either in video or in person. At this price, I don't think anyone can go wrong..

I myself like the looks of this car. I does kinda look like a BMW 5 series in the front and back . Hyundai has made a lot of improvements on there cars. My dad and brother have Hyundai's and they are quite happy with them. 2008 Elantra GL auto & 2007 Accent SR. You should just check them out and then see if there right for you. They seem as good as a Honda or Toyota , though they don't have the reputation ...yet. Everyone has a different opinion on these cars .

Well, interesting to see this debate is still going on with such....intensity. To be honest a few years ago I would of never even thought to buy a Hyundai, especially one that they call luxury, but this company has proven itself only to the ones that pay close attention. The sacrifice of price is to draw the main stream. A bold move and a direct attack on other luxury cars. This car is made to change minds about Hyundai. If the rich drive this Hyundai, you're gonna be more open to the company.

i drove the v-6 version today, very nice, you dont need the v-8, 100mph on the highway, no problem, smooth, nice interior, reminded me of my s320, sorry mercedes and bmw, i cant see spending the money you want, when this is available!!

Who would thought 20 years ago when hyundai first came on the scene that they would build such great cars. First the sonada,sante fe,varacruze,genesis. Hyundai has relly step thier game up with the Genesis a car that can compete with the BMW 5-series Mercedes E-class and let's not forget the new one they are comeing out with Equies.

The build quality is equivalent. Did I mention that you could buy 2 Genesis for one LS? You could pick up a Genesis 2.0T Sports Car for the money you save buying the Genesis Sedan. The 2010 Genesis also come with pre-collision detection. I prefer the Levision audio system -- but it's not that much better than the Lexicon. Seriously, people are paying $20k for the L badge on the front of the car. Its not that much better (if at all). Have you driven both? I HAVE......

There will always be die hards that wont accept competition. Companies that behave that way, die. It's a great car. You want a sporty car, look elsewhere. It works magnificently for my family and my clients. I did my part for the American economy when I bought our Suburban but hey, I also bailed them out. So now I'm getting the best I can for my money and this is it.

Ah, see thats why i was confused. I was referring to the category it was in. The genesis is considered an Upscale sedan, while the taurus and passat are considered Full-Size Family sedans. Granted, the Avalon and CC are direct competitors to the Genesis based on vehicle category. So heres what I did: I compared the Avalon Fully loaded, Genesis Fully Loaded, and the CC Loaded: The CC faired the poorest, while the Avalon and Genesis were basically mark for mark in standard and optional features

Yes, European cars are well known for their great handling, and yes you do get the options in the BMW that you won't find in the Genesis like voice command. If you leave out vehicle history that's where differences end. Apparently not comparing the bigger and more expensive 5 series makes me dumb to wgaewg. If you look at the 3.8 v-6 Genesis you get great options that come standard, and for 7k more get everything.

@sacdude20 youshould try driving the car then commenting, i test drove the genesis sedan, and the elantra. Both cars perform extremly well, and the V8 is extremely powerfull and has a nice growl

The New XLE camry has all that except for a v8 and a lexicon surround sound system. you can opt for a slightly worse sound system. I believe this is probably on par with the Avalon, and less so than the Camry.

You get way more for your money than you do with a Lexus. Also, this car is not really meant to compete with the Lexus Es350. Besides, this car looks WAY nicer than any Lexus.

@TourDeSomewhere I don't know abut kia, But i have a v6 genesis coupe and it is fantastic...good quality leather and at almost 15k miles now, no squeeks or rattles, i see myself buying another hyundai in the future, which my be soon if these prices stick lol *27 grand for my model, with a 5,000 rebate...so 22 grand for a v6 rear weel sports car not used suits me just fine* Hope the comment helps!

The Genesis bases at $32,250..... Fully optioned with every option at 42k..... I would not call it a "40k" car -- since about 80% of them will likely be sold in the 30k range.

I don't think you fully understand where this car is suppose to compete. It's targeted at low-mid $30,000 cars, but is successful enough to steal business from cars that cost $20,000 more. People that can look past it's brand name will enjoy a car that gives you luxury and performance without the heavy price. I can do many things with an extra $20,000, but i won't use it just to buy the name of a company.

@demecrys there are alot of people that dont agree but what people dont know is hyundai is almost or is the cheapest automaker and the largest one that sells to 193 countries and made the most improvements to their cars. hyundai even has their own coach busses in korea and the hyundai rotem a traim line that was brought to california to help with public transporttation what other car company does that

adding bigger panels to the same chassis does not qualify it as a bigger car...as far as sitting in them they have similar leg and head room so I don't know what you're talking about. Second, just because it appears to YOU that the genesis "copied" its major competitors does not mean it actually did...after all the engineers that designed the car are from Germany and Japan. So far every car enthusiast has been praising the car, even the Japanese without any word of "copying" in their vocabulary

First, i'm the one who compared the 3 series to the Genesis because of price range. Your argument is by vehicle size, which it appears you believe makes the 5 series even more of a loss (since it's more expensive). The huge price gap made me go with the 3. You have a good argument, but in a debate you should insult the person's logic. Insulting the person directly makes you appear less credible.

This car is comparable to the Camry and the accord. The XLE Camry have the same features as the fully loaded genesis at around the same price. The camry is definitely better than the genesis.

Why don't you try researching something before saying another WRONG thing? I know, you just can't help it. The LS 460 does have a larger truck (by 2 cubic feet). The Genesis passenger cabin is 4 cubic feet larger than the LS 460 (roomier interior). The Genesis has more front headroom, more rear shoulder room and more leg room (front and rear) than the Lexus LS460. ...and yes, I prefer the more modern dash style of the Genesis (BMW-like) than the stodgy Lexus.

I simply meant that Hyundai is a lot better than they used to be you have to be honest, off course they not on par with the big Germans, i know Hyundai was intended for the middle lower class, i also said i wouldn't buy one despite cause i prefer more seasoned brands like infinity or Merc i just though that Spiaggas negativity was too harsh and the car did not deserve such insults, its not that bad. I agree with you don't flame me dude. &lets not talk about affording here, no offence.

lets not get assuming anything that wil surely get you hurt, i didn't even like Hyundai until recently when their cars started improving, if you doubt i was defending the car from spaigga just check his profile he genuinely doesn't like the car and we agreed to disagree. but honestly hyundai doesnt suck so hard any more so i can say there are up and coming to a decent standard and it is a fact that they as a company are growing so how is my statement far fetched again?

The people that comment poorly on Hyundai are either 1. Not car people. 2. out of the car scene for the past 10 years. 3. over privileged rich a-holes that only know about the luxury brand hat are driving. Ive already said before, this car is on par with the Avalon. And dont be saying that Toyotas suck because historically and modernly, they have out performed Hyundais in every single category. @sayeretmatkal17021 Actually, ford owns about 1/3 of mazda, so maxda is managaed by ford. And mazda has 5 less cars in its fleet then ford, so there is no way that every lincoln and ford is a mazda or anything similar. and also gm still has 12 divisions.

i've test driven both of them...my godparents bought the avalon and when parked next to the camry they're identical and from what i've read they even share the same chassis. As far as the cars copying each other the designs were copied and they are far from unique...look at the original civics and corollas from back then and now...they're pretty much similar in looks same with the pathfinder and 4runner...toyota made the sequoia, nissan answered with the armada...it's competition

This is going to sound out of line and border line rediculous but just the other day I was driving down the road and I mistaked the Hyundai Genesis for a Bentley for litteraly 1/2 a sec, They had the Angel wing Badge as the Emblem instead of the Hyundai company Logo badge on the rear, for a quick second I thought it was a foriegn exotic car or a Bentley until i got closer and saw the front of the car. However having that siad I dont think they look like Bentleys at ALL. =)

i dont get it, every1 says it looks like a merc/bmw/infiniti/bmw/lexus/audi/ everyother luxury brand. so wouldnt that mean that all of those have to look similar also? only reason every1 uses that is bcuz its new to the market and have to compare it to something and every1 uses it to hate bcuz they are scared of hyundai.

if you want to make that argument then there's nothing unique about BMW...they got the idea of the rounded headlights from Mercedes, Ford, Chevy, and Dodge took the concept of the FF from Honda and Toyota, Infiniti copied a LOT from Mercedes and Lexus, oh and the Avalon is not bigger...it shares the same chassis as the Camry, just beefier panels...saying the Avalon is bigger is like saying the G37 is bigger than the 370Z

Alright let's compare my favorite BMW the 335i base price sedan $40,300. This price is just the car with barely any options. If you want all the options this car can make it up to $50k. A Hyundai Genesis comes fully equipped at $42,000 for the v-8, however, your missing out on proven German engineering and all-wheel drive. This car is an option 4 ppl that don't care about luxury names. Not all of those makes offer sound dampening, cvt, passive entry, rain sensing wipers, etc.

if you really want to get into creative copying by cars let's go ahead and list the numerous automakers that have copied each other...maxima, accord, and camry; 4runner and pathfinder; civic and corolla; evo and sti...yet all popular vehicles. BTW the camry and the avalon are the same size. There is nothing wrong with the genesis coupe or sedan...its the #1 car in North America for a reason...and they didn't spare costs and it's reasonably priced.

no, its not all those cars look the same, its tht it has bits and peices frm other cars, like the front is mercedes like, the bck is Lexus like, the chrome around the windows resymbols BMW and etc... and I dnt think any is scared of Hyundai.

(2009) according to JD power and associates, toyota's lexus is the highest, then porsche, cadillac, hyundai and honda.

i will take this car over lexus gs hands down but i will not take this car over a used lexus ls 430. They are built for different purpose though.

hyundai ranked #4 in initial quality from JD Power and Associates 2009 Initial Quality Study beating out mercedes, bmw (who is tied with kia btw), honda, toyota, volkswagen and many others.

@rubiks15 The most probably the same or better than my Accent 2006. It is 4 years now, and I HAD NO PROBLEM WITH THAT CAR....Actually I have people offering me money to buy it....It actually still smell like new. I use it everyday, and it has by now like 75000 Km. If my $11500.00 is like it is now after 4 years, that $35000.00 should do way better.
