The best part is that he didn't just win, he wiped them out. I couldn't believe that the announcer had so counted him out and focused on the the two lead favorites that he didn't even see him Mine That Bird sneak through and he had such a lead by the time he did realize it his amazement was almost comical! What a thrill, when you talk about heart, this horse has it in spades!
Absolutely the greatest ride ever. And he really did mess up the track announcer. Even in the first call he was so far back the announcer missed him and then called him way late. And then he doesn't see him until he's 3 lengths ahead. But watching Borel is amazing how he first gets right over to the rail and spots the field 25 lengths and then turns passes horses staying on the rail; comes off of the rail to pass a few and then darts back to the rail to win easily. Goose bumps every time!
The fact that the announcer didn't even know the name of the horse after he was in first for at least 5 seconds makes the upset that much more special. Twice he missed him, he forgot to call him in the backstretch he was so far out of it. WOW
I will always believe Mine that Bird would have won the Preakness and the Triple Crown, had Calvin Borel not been committed to riding Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness. Borel did win the Triple Crown that year, only it was on two different horses.
Mine that birds win is more impressive than Rich Strikes in my opinion because he came from dead last most of the race. Rich strike's was amazing also and the race call helped it as well. Here Tom Durkin blew this call for Mine that bird. But he does make Giacamos 2005 kentucky derby win extra exciting with his call there. Tom durkin gave many awesome race calls. TIZNOW wins it for america....giacammos....monarcos he was as fast as secretariat call...but he failed on this mtb call. In his defense...the track announcer is way up at the top of the track and they use binoculars to follow the horses throughout the race. In a 20 horse field...not an easy task! But these 3 legends had some of the best derby finishes of all time. Mine that bird...rich strike and giacamo. Look up tvg announcer goes crazy to see Ken Rudolph go nuts when giacamo wins!
I love to watch replays of my favorite races and I'm grateful to RU-vid for having many of them out there for me to enjoy time and time again. I check this one out several times a year. Thanks for the memories Bird.. and the Rage'n Cajun too!
@Matty11209 No comparison. Mine That Bird was 10 yards ahead of the other horses before this guy even picked up on it. Rich Strike took the lead close to the finish line, not 200 feet away from it.
@@skiptowne5724 Colmus was calling Simplification next after Epicenter and Zandon when Rich Strike was already in the lead. He totally missed him. Watch that part again.
That was the greatest comeback in the Kentucky derby I've ever seen. He was dead last from the start, by several lengths, and flew by everyone in the final turn. Then won by almost 7 lengths. Second biggest upset in history
@@OfficialMuffiin 6-1. Obviously after the Derby win bettors were more confident in him. But only had the third best odds, which is pretty rare, usually the derby winner has the best odds in the preakness
@@dylancrippen3228 I Said the best Racing Story. Not the best Racing horse! If a horse sits in the back of a trailer, is driven all the way from Nevada to Kentucky that way, has a 50:1 odds, and still wins against all the AC kept, well fed Arabian throrughbreds, that certainly makes for a compelling narrative. Sth it seems your incapable of realising.
I loved it when Calvin Borel knew he had the field put away and pointed to them in the homestrech. A classic race and an awesome ride. I am sure someone has a picture of this. One of my favorite races of all time, along with Secretariat's Belmont.
I will always love this performance, still gets my heart pounding when Mine That Bird starts flying on the rail, picking off horses and leaving all in his wake.
My favorite Derby EVER!! Also my 'favorite' Derby call, in that Mine That Bird is mentioned exactly twice, far back and ... oh, wait ... who just won??? Seriously, how many lengths ahead do you have to be before somebody notices you? It's not like he won by a nostril. He killed. Guess Mine That Bird knows better than anyone how Secretariat felt, who was also basically ignored in the Derby call. With Secretariat going in as a race favorite, it wasn't quite that bad. It was even worse.
in not english fluent , but i noticed that tpp...the guy simply mention it till the end of the race ..what a twat...i hope that guy whats fired ...such awfull race commentator
It's 6 years later and it's still hard to believe. All those decent horses standing still as Calvin Borel rides that ludicrous rocket down the rail. It still seems impossible!
This is one of those MANY races where you look at the racing form, look again and want to burn it, realizing that a lifetime of studious handicapping is essentially meaningless and curse the day you made your first bet and got into this stupid game. And, to add insult to injury the same thing happened with Grindstone, Birdstone, and Summer Bird...all horses you could never bet 'on paper' but proved to have a tenacious bloodline.
Only he wasn't ludicrous...he was the 2 year old Canadian champion....bought and sent down to Sunland park and raced within the week. Took a bit of time to acclimate to the elevation...but once he did, it turned out he was the fittest horse in the race...benefiting from the high altitude training...
Unfortunately he never won again. Yet at the same time you can't really call him a fluke, either, considering he just missed in the Preakness and still hit the tri at Belmont. What an odd yet tenacious and loveable little horse. Too bad we will likely never see a Giacomo or Mine That Bird type horse in the Derby ever again, neither of them would have gotten in/been eligible if they had ran in the Derby in 2013 or later, the points system has really changed the shape of the race. No more cheap speed or early speedball types - the opening quarter here was suicidal and Pioneerof the Nile did very well to fight on for second. If he had been further back he might've been closer to MTB... although with those opening fractions it was the perfect setup. (And personally I think it's a shame, I mean you can't tell me a 50-1 longshot going 20 lengths from last to first by nearly 7 lengths isn't exciting as hell!?) And what an amazing hat trick by Calvin to pull off the Oaks/Derby double on the same weekend on a Frontrunning presser and a deep closer. Must have been a fairytale year for him.
Forever in my memory will be Borel pointing his whip to the grandstand when inside the 16th pole. Not to mention his emotional interview while on the track right after the race. Just a beautiful moment in history.
Makes me smile every time I watch it. The underdog dusted them all. And that little horse; Win, Place and Show in TC races is quite a feat. His place and show we’re by short margins too. Great horse!
The call is pretty hilarious and just shows how forgotten and how far back Mine That Bird was. Also just watched the movie 50 to 1 and shows the backstory of Mine That Bird. Great movie and should watch it if you are into horse racing!
Mine That Bird was a small thoroughbred racehorse, but he had a very high leg-turnover speed, which is why he was so fast for his small size. He turns over his legs more quickly than the larger horses.
1/22/2017 and i'm still watching this. Seeing underdogs win never gets old with me. Even if I lost some coin on the deal, this was still fun as hell to watch.
The heart that horse 🐎 had was awsome and the fact the announcer never seen it like everyone else did is price less . I've watch this clip over and over just for the pure satisfaction of never count your chickens before they hatch . Also the pride of that horse!!
What Mine That Bird does from 2:32 to 2:38 is just so ridiculous. The slomo is great but actually following it in real time makes you see how explosive he was. He not only blew away the rest of the field but he stayed in full throttle while making a sharp right and then a sharp left. For being such a long shot and so far back, I think this just edges out Secretariat as the greatest run of all time. And for my money Tom Durkin makes it even better by completely missing Mine That Bird TWICE -- first for being so far BACK (1:55), and then for being so far AHEAD (2:50). Incredible stuff.
This was so exciting!!!! Had never heard of Mine That Bird until i watched the movie on tv, but with such a performance he should be just as famous as the other great racing horses in history! He did fantastic here!!!!
Good evening. in a "50 to 1" scene, a gentleman during the Pre-Derby party says "This year we have owners from England, Dubai, France, ireland and even from New Mexico!" (laughs) You know who opened that door? Venezuelans Gustavo Avila (jockey) Juan Arias (trainer) and Juan Quintero (groom) when they traveled to Louisville in 1971 to win, against all odds, 97th Kentucky Derby with Canonero II, a horse born in United States and bred in Venezuela. His owner, Pedro Baptista (RIP) couldn´t travel due to financial problems. Their performance was very similar to Mine That Bird´s one. Greetings from Venezuela.
One of the greatest rides I've ever seen. The craziest thing to me was that Mine That Bird scraped the rail so hard in the stretch run that he stumbled - and still won going away! Insane. I recall being at Keeneland a couple weeks prior to the Derby and overhearing someone state that they would be playing Mine That Bird heavily, that they trusted in Borel. Wish I would have been thinking the same way. Didn't cash a lick on that Derby.
Dreams become frailty watching this race. Tom was a little slow recognizing Mine That Bird blowing the competition away. But the outcome was awesome! Enjoy as best you can and stay healthy and safe, it's 2021 and still loving every minute of it...
Yes, I remember watching that race in a casino and mine that bird totally screwed up my ticket but he and Calvin Borel gave me one of the thrills of horse racing. What a ride!! Still thrills me to this day. I was living in Utah at the time and used to go to Wyoming Downs every one in a while and I saw that little horse and saw not a thing to indicate any greatness. Boy was I wrong!!
Whoever clicked a thumbs down lost their house in the race. I don't care if your a fan of horse racing or not, this is amazing..... Thanks for the views all....
I KNOW, RIGHT?? Check out all the thumbs down for Secretariat's Belmont. Really, people? Really? Guess some people can't stand to see anyone win. Even a horse.
Chloe Smyth I dont think it is about the horse or the race. Some people could be thumbing down because Tom Durkin missed Mine that Bird's move. It is a serious possibility. I have NOT thumbed this down though.
Mine that bird is a amazing out there somewhere and boom he wins angel says he is my ideal to become a jockey about this race horse 🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
I come back every now and then and watch this race again, "for the lift." I was there that day, watching this race in simulcast at a nearby casino. I wasn't entirely new to horse racing, but with significantly less experience in horse rating than I am now. But on that day, I remember not only being annoyed by the boisterous crowd in the game room (Derby day) and standing room only...I was using the DRF form at that time "often enough" and said to this lady next to me, in reading this horses's running lines-- "look at what this horse can do!" She just kind of stared back at me with a blank look on her face. (And I thought "newbie") I even left the casino early that day, thinking I'll catch the results on the internet when I get home--"got wiped out early " on my funds that day. Can you imagine how I felt, when I got home and checked the results to see that this horse came in for the win at 50-1! No problem though, I've learned to wait for horses like this ever since. It was comforting to know (and still is) that I had elevated to a new level of "handicapper's ability" w/ this the race of 135th KD and my ability to see the potential of and witness the astounding ability of a horse's elegance and grace under pressure that day in Mine That Bird!
Always, you should have placed a 50 dollars bet on him, at the casino before you went broke. It is easier to win with the horses than playing at the casino.....for me it is.
Oh believe me, being older now and 'twiser'. 😆 Any horse with anywhere near the running lines of MTB.. is worth a starting stake of $50 and more. ( the only downside is the 'D.R. form probably costs that much now!)JK 😂 Still it's a good buy!
I was at the track for this race. Nobody in the building knew who had won the race until after the wire because Tom Durkin blew the call. Yes, its the Derby and there are a million horses, and yes, hes one of the all time greats, but I think if you asked him, he would even tell you it was not a great call of the race. That being said, an UNREAL trip on Mine that Bird by Calvin Borel. So patient, and he never had to check despite having to pass 19 horses while using the rail the entire way. Lucky, yes, but beautiful ride for a horse that was an easy 20 lengths out of it at the far turn.
LightningJanitorial I call bullshit on this story. Tom Durkin's race call is for NBC only. The call at Churchill Downs belongs to Mark Johnson, who called the race perfectly clear and did not miss Mine That Bird.
Lol for the life of me I can't figure out WHY I would lie about a story about a horse race. Look dude, believe or don't believe. I was at a casino that had TV's everywhere. You're right that Mark Johnson has the Churchill feed, but there were TV's with NBC's telecast all over the place where I was at. Anyway, as I said, believe what you want lol.
LightningJanitorial Tom was drunk at the end of a long Derby day card. He was waiting around to call the big one and just was shitfaced by the time the race started. The production truck saved NBC from all out disaster by yelling in Durkin's ear that MTB was ahead by 4 and was flaying at the wire. He was toasted.
It has been circulating for years but when you look at the race and the call of the race it does not seem far fetched at all. The truck plays a bigger part talking to announcers in their ears than people think. This was one of those times.
James Crosby I am a fan of Tom Durkin, but here it sounds like he'd had one mint julep too many, especially as he screamed about POTN and yammered about the other horses as Mine That Bird left them all in the dust.
It's PIONEEROF THE NILE (American Pharoah's Dad btw), due to the 18-character limit on a horse's name. His children often use the same spelling like Empressof The Nile
This video is so exciting. I wish I had been there to see this race. I'm watching Mine That Bird gaining on the horses in the lead, expecting the announcer to notice that he's taking the lead, but doesn't until he's way out in front. Such a great race. :-)
This gives me chills every single time I have seen Mine That Bird win the 2009 Kentucky Derby. I am really looking forward to seeing #50to1themovie about Mine That Bird's journey. Christian Kane, Skeet Ulrich, William Devane, Madelyn Deutch, and Todd Lowe star in this film.
zdlr Movie was slow & hokey, but fairly accurate as far as I know the background. Pretty thrilling though when they finally got to the race itself. Calvin Borel's appearance made all the difference, & the shot of him in the gate snorting like a racehorse was perfect. I whooped and hollered like it was all happening for the first time.
zdlr It was great! I loved every single second. I laughed, cried, and cheered! #ChristianKane did an amazing job portraying Mark Allen. This is a feel-good movie that the whole family can see, and we need more of those. I plan to purchase this DVD when it comes out, so my family can watch this over and over. It is definitely one for our library of movies.
***** I loved it from start to finish.. it was a true story.. so yeah.. not everyone lives a life of full of thrills and chills.. it was about the relationship of the men who owned the horse.. and between the horse and men.. and what they endured on the way to the winners circle.. saw it three times.. and loved it more and more each time! #ChristianKane and #SkeetUlrich played their parts to perfection... and #CalvinBorel .. well who knows how to play himself better than the man himself?? awesome from start to finish.. I highly recommend it for everyone!.
Even tho I lost money on the race it's probably the best Derby I have ever seen. Magnificent ride on a beautiful horse. And to top it off Bob Baffert lost which is always a good thing.
In a "50 to 1" scene, a gentleman during the Pre-Derby party said "this year we have horses fron Ireland, France, United Arab Emirates and even from New Mexico.." You know who opened that door? I'm here after watching a movie 50 to 1. Awesome race, incredible horse, just fantastic. This time "like in movie" scene happened in real life. I'm really overwhelmed.
The Bird came with a rush from last in the last turn and snicked between horses to the inside and took the lead long, long before the anouncer saw him. Incredible race for the Bird....from last to first with a rush....suspicious mind.
I had to play it at 0:25 several times. He surged on the rail from the back and and just went around the jockey in hot pink as if he was standing still
This just cracks me up. He's four lengths in front before ever getting a "call." This was fictionalized with humor in the "Mine That Bird" movie, with a racing office clerk trying to get the announcer's attention to tell him Bird was making an awesome move. Seeing the actual footage, you can tell the announcer had to check his program to see who was in front, it was so implausible. And best of all, "Bird" ran great races in the Preakness and Belmont as well. If he'd been running in the 1980s when racing had a million-dollar bonus for the best Triple Crown performance (1st-2nd-3rd), he'd have won that,
What is hilarious is that the guy calling the race did NOT have a CLUE that "Mine that bird" had taken the lead until the race was almost over.....watching the last 20 seconds is perfection.....Calvin Borel rode a perfect ride.....it reminded me of the Seabisquit movie.
*I enjoyed this race so much, because the race caller didn't know who he was. He had to pause and figure it out, and then Mine That Bird blew the all out! His owner drove him all the way from Texas. His owner also had a broken leg and was on crutches!*
Aside from Secretariats Belmont this is by far my favorite horserace of all time. That little horse just danced through the mud and nobody saw him until it was too late.
That is why you pace yourself. All the so called superstuds burned themselves out, Mine That Bird passed them in the end like they were standing still. Calvin Borel crafted a beautiful ride
I might have watched this race 50 times looking for Mine That Bird and only now realized he really was at the back. I always thought it was Mr. Hotstuff because of the call. It's amazing to watch...
Neon Winchester as much as i hate the trainer, i absolutely love pioneet of the nile i was always a fan of his iam glad his son won the triple crown one day i will have baby from him
